What prayers did you learn as a child? Now I lay me… Come, Lord Jesus, be our guest… The Lord’s Prayer… I would have to give the credit to my mom, my Sunday School teachers, and my home church. Over the years I have learned how to pray from my wife, mentors, fellow pastors, members of Holy Cross, and friends. Along the way I have discovered over and over again the power of prayer. But, sometimes our prayers are not answered, at least in the way we think they should be or want them to be answered. What then? Consider these words about Jesus recorded in Luke 18:1: Jesus told his disciples a parable change our lives and our life together as the Church if we will to show them that they should but learn to pray it with faith and always pray and not give up. understanding. So, how do we breathe some life Pastor S and power back into our prayers? This summer we will answer that question by turning to a traditional prayer that we all know – The Lord’s Prayer. But, as we consider each part and petition of the Lord’s Prayer we will see how praying this prayer will HOSPITAL VISTS AND HEALTH CARE PRIVACY LAWS Due to changes in health care privacy laws, the local hospitals are no longer making available to clergy the list of members from their congregations who are hospitalized. COMMUNICATING AND CELEBRATING THE MISSION AND MINISTRIES OF HOLY CROSS Page 3 WORSHIP INTERN AT HOLY CROSS Meet Larissa Gronseth, a student from Crossroads College, Rochester, MN, who is serving as a Worship Intern at Holy Cross this summer under Cindy Wessel’s supervision. Larissa and her husband Zack live in Byron, MN, and she plans to graduate in December 2016 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Music. In fulfillment of the Crossroads course requirements, Larissa is serving at Holy Cross approximately 10 hours a week, plus spending time on her own journaling her internship experience, and reading and reporting on two books assigned by Cindy. Larissa is helping at Holy Cross with worship planning, rehearsals, communication, and worship-related projects, and she is Our goals for Larissa, who already demonstrates a maturity attending weekly Worship Design meetings with Pastor Steof insight regarding worship ve, Pastor Fran, and Cindy, as ministry, are that she grows in the grace and knowledge of our well as attending some of the weekly Ministry Team meetings Triune God while we give her with our pastors, Cindy, and opportunities to put into practice what she has been learning Curt Boger. in school, give her new experiConcurrent with her internship, ences, and to help her learn Larissa serves part-time at a new skills. congregation outside of Roches- ter, leading a small worship team, serving as administrative assistant/bookkeeper, and leading the nursery ministry. Due to her commitments at her home church, Larissa will probably not worship God with us at Holy Cross on Sundays, but watch for opportunities to meet her during the week. Please pray that the internship continues to be a win-win for Larissa and Holy Cross as we work together to be helping people become fully alive in Jesus and, specifically in the Worship Area Ministries, leading people into the presence of God. Mrs. Larissa Gronseth, Worship Intern INDOOR/OUTDOOR NOTIFICATIONS FOR WORSHIP IN THE COURTYARD Sunday, June 5, marks the first day of our 2016 Outdoor Worship Services. Each Sunday at 9:30 a.m., dress for the weather, and come to the Courtyard to worship God. Holy Cross member Kevin Erickson’s Weather Calculator (developed with the help of Meteorologist Randy Brock) will help us make “indoor/outdoor” decisions based on safety, health, and comfort criterion. Assume that we’ll be outdoors, but if it’s questionable, after 7:00 a.m., check your email or the Holy Cross Facebook page for the weather call. If you have a favorite lawn chair, bring it! Dress for the weather. And invite a friend! FULLY ALIVE! Page 4 YOUTH MISSION MANIA! Our annual Mission Mania event was once again a great day of celebrating and supporting youth mission trips! Lots of great donated goods, scrumptious baked items, and plants, baskets, and tubs from Gerten’s were available, both before and after a great lunch of grilled hamburgers, brats, and dogs! GREAT DAY! (both youth and adult), to those who donated and baked, and of course all those who came out to support our Youth Mission16 team. The Mission16 team is now set, and departs on June 30 for a week in the hills of West Virginia, coming to the aid of people in need. We raised over $2,000 for youth missions, with many plants yet to sell as of this writing. Our thanks go out to all the helpers Sam St Peter takes care of a special customer at Mission Mania! Hours are 710 pm (we are not meeting the first week of July). Games, s'mores, and some music around the campfire are planned each week as we gather as an Acts 2:42 church and live the abundant life together! All are welcome. POBLO NEWSLETTER VOLUNTEER SHARING When I sat in on an ESL class at POBLO last year, I knew it was something I wanted to do, but I felt inept at being called a teacher. I asked Kristine for a class that was just conversational. I felt that God had given me the “gift of gab” and this would be a good use for it. What I have learned (in abundance!) is that the real teaching comes in listening – everyone has a story to tell. I have had students from China, Taiwan, Saudi Arabia, and the Czech Republic, and I have learned far more from them than they have probably learned from me. Two hours seem to fly by, and we save questions for the next week. I usually have 3-5 students, and it is wonderful to watch them help each other when trying to find the right word to use to describe something – sometimes it turns into a guessing game for all of us! I feel God has brought all of these nationalities to Rochester to remind us that while we may not all look alike, but we are all His beloved children. John Gayed recently reminded us all to be less “earthly” and more “heavenly” – that is, to think/act as our Father would. He said people come to the Friendship Center because they will be greeted with a smile and that someone cares for them. This is not the way they (specifically, Muslims/Middle Easterners) are perceived on the street. He said Americans do not look at them or smile because they feel afraid. What an easy way for all of us to start our “missionary work” – with just a simple SMILE! It’s been said that “the truth will set you free”. Is this always true, or are there times it’s acceptable to lie? Is honesty always the best policy? Or is there a gray area in which it’s acceptable to blur the truth? In this episode you will discover the power of honesty. Why do we do things we know will end badly?
