Our plumbing design services include: determining required plumbing fixture counts, fixture selection and layout, domestic water and gray water system design, sanitary-waste-out system design, storm water design, and special waste design. Our design software and analysis tools allow us to determine fixture units and pipe sizes, as well as perform material take-offs seamlessly within our Computer Aided Design and Drafting (CADD) approach. WAI has provided plumbing services for several high profile projects, such as The Pentagon in Washington, D.C., a 1.6 million sq. ft. LEED Gold project with a construction budget of over $7.0 million for the fixtures alone. Electrical WAI’s electrical design includes: power distribution, lighting design for interior and exterior spaces, data, communication, and security systems, and special control systems. Power distribution system design includes: main electrical service (primary, secondary and power transformer), main switchboard and distribution panel, branch circuit panel boards and protective devices, distribution transformers, feeder, branch circuits calculation, power riser/wiring diagram, grounding system, and TVSS protection. WAI also performs power quality and power system analysis for all projects. Power system analysis includes: load flow analysis and voltage drop calculation, short circuit study, arc flash analysis, protective devices coordination study, power quality and harmonics analysis. Services & Capabilities WAI has designed more than 400 lighting projects of various sizes over the last 21 years. Some project types have included: wholesale lighting retrofits primarily motivated by energy conservation, complete redesigns driven by a desire for improved aesthetics coupled with energy conservation, energy efficient retrofits of older lighting fixtures driven by energy code compliance requirements, lighting studies for existing facilities, and new construction. We take pride in our special expertise of designing lighting control systems that are aesthetically pleasing, energy efficient, and cost effective. Several different lighting control strategies we have implemented are: light harvesting systems, dimming systems, multi-level switching systems (including bi-level switched troffers), occupancy sensing switching (using dual technology sensors), and individual task level control. WAI also routinely designs emergency power systems including emergency/stand-by generator and uninterruptible power source (UPS) for various project types. These range from emergency power systems to address minimum code emergency illumination needs, to critical power applications. In critical power applications we have designed systems which address: single, double, and triple failure conditions. WAI uses Lightning Protection Systems for different projects based and Lightning Risk Study. Lightning protection study/design includes: lightning risk assessment, system protections (such as conventional system, early streamer emission system, charge dissipation system), identify material and specification of air terminals, main conductors, junctions/connections and grounding system based on building type, construction, application and location. Grounding system study/design covers grounding and bonding of all electrical installation and all equipment. Study includes specifying grounding method, grounding electrodes, grounding electrode conductors, equipment bonding jumpers, junctions and connections. Fire Protection and Life Safety WAI’s fire protection engineering services include: design and analysis of fire alarm systems, fire suppression systems, smoke control systems, and life safety egress illumination and guidance. Our fire suppression system designs have included: wet and dry pipe fire systems, preaction and deluge sprinkler systems, standpipe systems, fire and jockey pumps, onsite fire water storage and gaseous extinguishant systems (including FM 200 and Intergen). Other special use spaces designs have incorporated smoke control system, including: smoke evacuation, floor pressurization control, elevator shaft venting, and stairway pressurization systems. MEP LEED Services WAI provides Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) consulting for all mechanical, plumbing, and electrical aspects of a project. We understand the importance of LEED and have multiple LEED Accredited Professionals within our office. WAI has been involved with numerous projects that have been or are in the process of being LEED certified and have been incorporating energy conservation into their projects long before LEED was established. Services & Capabilities Commissioning WAI has provided commissioning services since the early 90’s for: mechanical, plumbing, electrical, fire protection, and life safety. Since the US Green Building Council (USGBC) existence, WAI has modified our commissioning to include LEED fundamental and enhanced commissioning, as well as Energy Star consulting. WAI’s commissioning services projects operate at higher energy efficiencies, and provide: pollution prevention (P2), environmental health, occupant safety, and improved indoor air quality. We successfully plan, deliver, verify, and manage risks to critical functions performed in, or by, facilities. The commissioning process formalizes review and integration of all project expectations throughout planning, design, and construction. Construction Administration WAI performs a large percentage of construction administration services every year. A large portion of our portfolio is design-build projects, including a $35 million Rehabilitation of the Asia Trail Elephant Facility at the National Zoo (shown below) and over $100 million worth of construction on and around the U.S. Capitol Square. Key Personnel Key Personnel Elizabeth Weigand, BAE President / MEP Contract Administrator & Quality Control Manager EDUCATION: Pennsylvania State University, Bachelor of Architectural Engineering, Structural Specialization - 5 year degree Prior to forming Weigand Associates, Inc. (WAI), Elizabeth Weigand practiced structural engineering as a design and project engineer. Later, Ms. Weigand went into facilities design with the Department of the Treasury where she utilized her multi-discipline architectural engineering expertise in managing projects as a contracting officer technical representative (COTR) and branch head of the Office of Engineering Facilities Projects Branch. In addition to her responsibilities as a manager, which included: planning, scheduling, budgeting, and supervising the design staff, she was appointed to the Southwest Gateway Project (involving the historic Bureau of Engraving and Printing Building) in charge of technical oversight, NCPC representation, and interagency coordination. She was granted a sensitive security clearance based upon a Memorial Reception Building at the Arlington National Cemetery limited background investigation performed by OPM. Ms. Weigand has valuable project management experience as both a government representative and as a consultant; including design and construction management phases. Project types he has worked on include: governmental, educational, medical, religious facilities, commercial buildings, housing and sport complexes, amusement parks, maintenance facilities, industrial projects, etc. Mr. Towhidi’s electrical design experience includes high, medium, and low voltage design; including both normal and emergency Baltimore Polytechnic Institute power systems. He has over 39 years of experience in designing: power distribution, lighting, fire alarm/life safety systems, and communication systems. He is experienced in wiring infrastructure for: telephone, LAN, and video networks. Mr. Towhidi has designed sound and lighting dimming/control systems, including those for the performing arts, with his most involved lighting control system having a material cost in excess of $400,000. Mr. Towhidi has extensive experience in design-build work, including acting as the lead electrical engineer in over $130 million of construction work with over the last few years for the Architect of the Capitol and the Smithsonian Institute. Mr. Sherman has many large scale se projects in his portfolio, including a new 560,000 sq. ft. parking garage for BWI Airport p aand Frederick Memorial Hospital Emergency Room expansion and renovation. Prior to joining WAI, Mr. Sherman worked as the sole plumbing engineer for an engineerP specifications, drafting, and construction administration. Queen Anne’s County Emergency Center Project Experience Dennis Avenue Health Center Replacement & Addition Maryland Owner: Montgomery Co. Government WAI is providing electrical, AV, telecommunications, security and fire protection for a new $24 million, 51,000 sq. ft. health center replacement facility to address space shortage and building deficiencies. The new building will be adjoined by a common entry lobby to the existing building. The existing building requires replacement/modification of: HVAC and electrical systems, structural system, perimeter skin walls, elevator, and roof. The new building will consist of: reception/ patient waiting rooms, laboratories, exam rooms, administrative offices, conference rooms, nurse stations, biohazard storage warehouses, restrooms, showers, utilities storage, copy rooms, etc. An emergency generator will be designed to operate the facility and communication systems at nominal levels up to 72 hours. The AE team is responsible for coordinating all aspects of design, permits and approvals, utilities, systems, schedule, and phasing with County representatives and vendors. This project is currently in Design Development and anticipating LEED Silver certification. Rendering below provided by Grimm and Parker Architects. New Queen Anne’s County Emergency Center Maryland Owner: University of Maryland Medical Systems WAI provided plumbing, fire alarm, and fire sprinkler services for this new 18,500 sq. ft. free standing emergency facility. This $6.5 million facility operates on a 24-hour, 7-days a week schedule to serve the residents of Queen Anne’s County and the neighboring region. It has a full service licensed emergency department, including imaging and laboratory services, with 11 treatment rooms and on-site imaging and laboratory services. The Emergency Facility has the ability to care for all levels of medical emergencies, accept emergency medical services transports, and transfer to hospitals if needed via ambulance or medical helicopter. Key features include: • Facility include: showers (including emergency showers), clinical service sinks, medical air compressor, roof drainage systems (primary and emergency), electrical water heater, medical vacuum pump, oxygen manifold, underground storm and sewer piping, medical and natural gases, exam rooms, laboratories, lounges, nurse stations, storage, etc. • Design of plumbing, fire alarm, and fire sprinkler systems for the entire facility. • Design of water service entrance. • Developed a contractor design/build performance specification for the sprinkler piping network. • Coordinated system designs with the architect, other MEP engineers, the structural engineer, and the civil engineer. New Queen Anne’s County Medical Office Building Maryland Owner: University of Maryland Medical Systems WAI provided plumbing, fire alarm, and fire sprinkler services for this new 3-story, 60,000 sq. ft. medical building. This facility houses: imaging, primary care, orthopedics, OB/GYN and psychiatry. Other services available include: diagnostic and laboratory testing, physical and speech therapy, occupational health services and several specialty practices. This medical pavilion adds primary and specialty medical services to Shore Health System’s Queen Anne’s County campus, located on the same site as the Queen Anne’s County Emergency Center. Operating Rooms & Surgical Support Expansions Baltimore, Maryland Owner: Baltimore Washington Medical Center WAI provided the plumbing, fire alarm, and sprinkler design services for the $22 million expansion of multiple operating rooms and surgical support additions and rearrangements. WAI’s plumbing design included: DWV, storm water, domestic water, natural gas, medical gases, and vacuum. This renovation added six emergency rooms, relocated surgery prep, reconfigured central sterilization area, and created a new waiting room. Health Sciences Building, Howard Community College Columbia, Maryland Anticipating LEED Silver Owner: Howard Community College This $35 million project included the design and construction of a new Health Sciences Building of 94,830 gross sq. ft. to support the health sciences disciplines of nursing and allied health. This facility houses: cardiovascular technology, emergency medical technician/paramedic exercise science, life fitness, healthcare, health education, human services, nursing, radiology technology, surgical technology, dental assistant/hygienist, occupational therapy, physical therapy, and respiratory therapy. The new building will also include: classrooms, an assembly lecture hall, meeting rooms, laboratories, offices and administrative support facilities, building support areas, and hazardous materials storage. In addition, consideration needs were given to a satellite central utility plant also housed in the new Health Sciences Building to serve the facility and future expansion on the south end of the campus. This project anticipates a LEED Silver certification. WAI provided all plumbing design for this new building. Student & Faculty Services Center, UMUC Maryland Anticipating LEED Gold Owner: University of Maryland University College WAI provided the design and integration of the mechanical, plumbing, and electrical systems for the major renovation of a 140,000 sq. ft. existing building, including a complete replacement of the mechanical center plant. The Center houses primarily office space, classrooms and computer labs, a cafeteria, etc. This project included: replacing chillers, boilers, cooling towers, and Air Handling Units, as well as energy management and VAV retrofits, lighting design (including motion sensors), fire sprinkler and alarm assessments, etc. Research was also done by WAI to incorporate a geothermal water source heat pump system. The overall goals of the new systems were: to meet the needs of the users, provide good indoor air quality, to be energy efficient, to be easily maintainable, and to have low first cost as well as low life cycle costs, and to be cognizant of project construction budget limitations. Upgrades were made to the systems to meet current code and compliance with ASHRAE Standard 62 (as required for LEED Gold certification). This project was completed in AutoCAD and Revit (BIM). New Laboratory Building, GMU Fairfax, Virginia Owner: George Mason University WAI provided 3-D and color coded MPE coordination drawings for this new 88,000 sq. ft. university laboratory building to help resolve conflicts. Ryco Mechanical, the mechanical contractor, contracted WAI to develop their drawings for coordination of the building’s mechanical systems with all other building components. This facility included wet laboratories for biology, chemistry, and physics, as well as housed general classrooms and office spaces. Bells Mill Elementary School Bethesda, Maryland Owner: Montgomery County Public Schools Client: WMCRP, Inc. WAI provided consultation in the areas of electrical distribution, lighting design, mechanical, and plumbing design for a new 75,000 sq. ft. elementary school located in an affluent area of Montgomery County. To make sure Bells Mill Elementary School was eye catching; WAI geared the lighting design towards user tasks and were very creative and unique with the fixtures chosen. Typical classrooms for this building were provided with dedicated ventilation air from the energy recovery units (ERU’s), a small water source heat pump for conditioning purposes, a classroom sink, direct/indirect lighting, task oriented power and data connections and a specialized teacher data/power outlet. This project used a geothermal water source heat pump system maximizing the HVAC system’s sustainability and achieving part load efficiencies of EER = 30+. Paul Laurence Dunbar School Baltimore, Maryland Owner: Baltimore City Public Schools The Paul Laurence Dunbar School currently houses both NAF High School and public middle school students. The building is approximately 110,000 sq. ft. and was originally constructed in 1939. WAI performed a feasibility study, an HVAC Life Cycle Analysis (LCCA), and a preliminary design for a full building MEP retrofit in less than three months. WAI also completed construction documents for Phase I in less than 30 days, while construction administration is currently being performed for Phase I. This 53,000 sq. ft. project, located in Washington, DC, had a construction cost of $15 million. The design of the new addition housed a cafeteria, gymnasium and a rooftop art room. The existing building was reconfigured to create ground floor educational space, such as a library, computer room and music room. The classrooms were maintained with new energy-efficient, operable windows. The buildings systems were replaced and state-or-the-art communications and data systems were integrated into the existing architecture. This project won two awards including the 2005 Mayor’s Award for Excellence in Historic Preservation and the 2005 Merit Award for American Institute of Architects, Washington, DC Chapter. Galway Elementary School Silver Spring, Maryland Owner: Montgomery County Public Schools Client: WMCRP, Inc. The Galway Elementary School project includes a partial renovation and a substantial addition to the existing building. Galway Elementary School is the largest elementary school in the Montgomery County Public School system. Work areas included approximately 19,000 sq. ft. of minor renovation area, 35,000 sq. ft. of major renovation area, and 54,000 sq. ft. of addition area. WAI performed a complete mechanical, plumbing, fire protection, and electrical design. The mechanical system design consisted of a water source heat pump plant with a boiler/tower arrangement, terminal water source heat pumps (WSHP’s) for space comfort, a dedicated outside air ventilation system with dual pass energy recovery units (ERU’s) and full DDCEMCS. Typical classrooms were provided with ventilation air from the ERU’s, a small water source heat pump for conditioning purposes, a classroom sink, direct and indirect lighting, task oriented power and data connections and a specialized teacher data/power outlet. The construction budget for this project was $19 million. Memorial Reception Building Renovation Arlington, Virginia Won multiple Awards Owner: USACE Client: William V. Walsh Construction WAI provided mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design services for the design-build renovation of the Memorial Reception Building at the Arlington National Cemetery. The building’s grounds include the Tomb of the Unknowns and an amphitheater with a stage, which is used by the President of the United States, among others, for his Veterans Day and Memorial Day addresses. The building also includes: a two-story museum, a chapel, Tomb Guard quarters, offices, and a VIP lounge. WAI’s design services included: a mechanical retrofit, CBR (Chemical, Biological, Radiological) protection, HVAC acoustics assessment, electrical power and lighting retrofit, security and communication system improvements, fire protection engineering, and plumbing retrofit. The renovation corrected a serious water infiltration problem, which the Arlington National Cemetery had not been able to solve with previous repair projects. One O of WAI’s innovative design features provided on this project was the air conditioning of the two-story museum. The building previously did not have c conditioned air supplied directly into the museum spaces. Conventional thought c was w that the building design and historic fabric did not allow routing of supply air ai directly into the museum spaces. Although this item was not included in the original scope of work, WAI identified a means to provide conditioned air to o each museum space without cutting the plaster walls or ceilings. In addition, the e design-build team identified a sufficient number of cost saving modifications, to d incorporate this additional work item at no increase in project cost. in Congress, Senate, & Judiciary Buildings Perimeter Security Washington, District of Columbia Owner: Architect of the Capitol Client: William V. Walsh Construction WAI has provided mechanical, plumbing, and electrical engineering for multiple design-build perimeter security retrofit projects at Capitol Square for William V. Walsh Construction. The initial project began in 2002 with design and construction work continuing to date. These projects have been provided under the auspices of the Architect of the Capitol and the Capitol Police. Library of Congress The Pentagon Arlington, Virginia LEED Gold WAI’s experience with the Pentagon started in 2001 and continues to this day. WAI provided plumbing design for Wedge II (1.6 million sq. ft.) and the basement of Wedge III for the Pentagon Renovation (a design-build project); which received LEED Gold certification. WAI also recently completed the feasibility studies and DD1391’s for a new 60,000 sq. ft. operations building, a replacement fire station, and an air traffic control tower structure at the Pentagon Reservation. Walsh Construction WAI provided mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and fire protection design services for a design build of the Asia Trail II Elephant Facility, Phase I. This project was won via a preliminary design award competition and anticipates a LEED Gold accreditation. on The project encompassed a complete renovation and expansion of the Elephant Facility and habitat. The existing enclosure was renovated to enhance the visitor experience and provide improved natural lighting, ventilation, soft and heated flooring and an indoor activity center for the elephants. A barn extension was constructed on the east of the existing structure with state of the art facilities for the elephants. Key aspects of this project included: a geothermal based HVAC system; grey water system recycling water from staff showers/ locker room and laundry; a green roof; building management system (BMS) controls integrated with the campus front end for remote monitoring and control; design of high voltage (13.2 KV) and low voltage (480 V - 208 V); power distribution system; stand-by power generation system; design of a new fire alarm system for the addition and renovation area; design of a public address/ intercommunications system upgrades and expansion; and a security system. WAI also researched and designed a photo voltaic array with the capacity of 50 KVA to be installed in a future phase. WAI was not only responsible for the MEP design, but also performed the value engineering and full commissioning for MEP systems and LEED certification. Phase I of this project is complete and Phase II is under construction estimating to be completed in 2013. Grey Water System Thomas Farm Community Center Rockville, Maryland Based upon LEED Project Checklist v2.2 Owner: City of Rockville W provided WAI id d mechanical, h i l plumbing, l bi andd electrical l i l engineering i i servvices for the design and construction administration for the first Community Center west of I-270. This building is 18,000 sq. ft., C including: a gymnasium, a multi-purpose room with kitchenettes and in outdoor patio, a high class fitness center, game room, locker rooms, o offices and storage space, and a large gallery, lounge, and reception o aarea featuring artwork and computers with public internet access. Construction was completed in January 2009. C Although this building did not pursue LEED certification, WAI’s design was based heavily upon available points on the LEED Project Checklist v2.2. Specific areas of MEP consideration were: water use reduction, optimal energy performance, enhanced commissioning, measurement and verification, outdoor air delivery monitoring, increased ventilation, construction IAQ management plans, controllability of thermal comfort and lighting systems, thermal comfort design and thermal comfort verification. Special attention was given to the dimming system and lighting for this project. The dimming system is a Lutron Grafik Eye 4000 which will control all the lighting in the gallery via a 16 button keypad. Controls will be switching and dimming of various lamps types. 650 Massachusetts Avenue Projects Washington, District of Columbia Owner: U.S. Property Development Corp. WAI has performed studies and designs for ten projects throughout this building, including: • A 24 hour chilled water HVAC system for special use areas for the Bureau of Alcohol Tobacco & Firearms (ATF). • A new SCIF facility for ATF • Base building mechanical systems for several areas. WAI designed built-up central station chilled water air handling units and major modifications to the mechanical smoke evacuation system for the C2 level (ATF). • Tenant office fit-ups for both Federal and private users. These required modifications to: electrical distribution systems, rearrangements of mechanical systems, lighting, and the addition of new fire alarm controls. • WAI performed a study to construct a water reclamation system using a 20 gpm natural spring in the basement as makeup water for the cooling towers. This reclamation system was estimated to provide a net operating cost savings of $30,000 per year with a pay back period of 2.5 years. • Commissioning services. • Outside air (IAQ), energy studies and PEPCO Rebate consulting. Extensive site investigation was required. The electrical service and distribution was upgraded for selected areas to support new HVAC systems. Life Cycle Cost Analyses (LCCA) were performed. Cost estimates were provided. Design analyses with design criteria were provided. Reports and studies were provided. The work was done in multiple phases while the building was occupied. Architectural and structural services were required. All drawings were developed in CAD. Federal/GSA performance requirements were complied with. Post construction award services were provided. St. Philip’s Catholic Church Falls Church, Virginia Owner: Catholic Diocese of Arlington Before After The St. Philip’s Catholic Church project, located in Falls Church, VA, was a complete renovation of the church’s sanctuary, nave and narthex. WAI provided design services for lighting, electrical power distribution, plumbing, and mechanical engineering. The primary emphasis was on the lighting design, which included an entire new lighting system utilizing a Lutron Grafik Eye control system. With the new control system, the client has complete control over all fixtures, allowing for different scenes, special architectural effects, proper lighting ambiance, all done while saving energy. This project was very unique given that the entire ceiling was built out with white architectural bulkheads. These bulkheads were then mounted with linear lighting that was strategically hidden and provided a very uniform, pleasing wave like glow. The addition of ceiling mounted spot lights allowed the parish to highlight all of the many features located on the alter. St. Philip’s Church also wanted to emphasize the Stations of the Cross. To do this, each station, portrayed by a 3D metal engraved portrait, was illuminated by its own unique arcing arm fixture that provided a distinct highlight. Once the fixtures were added all attention was drawn towards them. St. John’s Catholic Church Westminster, Maryland Owner: Catholic Archdiocese of Baltimore WAI provided the mechanical, plumbing, electrical, and fire protection design of this new 23,000 sq. ft. church. The HVAC plant utilized a four pipe chilled/hot water configuration to provide heating or cooling on demand. A split system chiller with an air cooled condensing unit provides the chilled water, eliminating the need to drain down the chiller during the winter. CO2 sensors control the HVAC system outside air dampers to reduce operating costs while assuring acceptable indoor air quality. Multiple sound attenuating features were utilized to achieve NC25 in the sanctuary. Individually controllable theatrical grade lighting fixtures highlight selected features to develop focal points, while a programmable dimming system controls all lighting. Simple push button stations activate custom programmed lighting scenes; appropriate for the time of day and function. The building is fully sprinklered and utilizes an addressable voice fire alarm system. Plumbing fixtures use infrared sensors to conserve water and mitigate the spread of infectious disease. Additional features and requirements of this project included the following: • Special design features were required due to the reverent nature of the spaces. • The HVAC system was required to be very quiet. • The HVAC system was required to accommodate very wide swings in internal load, while maintaining acceptable space temperature, humidity, and indoor air quality. • A dynamically controlled lighting system was required to develop visual effects, reduce energy consumption, and improve lamp life. • Life safety systems (fire sprinkler, fire alarm, and emergency lighting) needed to be incorporated into a complex interior space without impacting the space aesthetics. The new building will be adjoined by a common entry lobby to the existing building. The existing building requires replacement/modification of: HVAC and electrical systems, structural system, perimeter skin walls, elevator, and roof. The new building will consist of: reception/patient waiting rooms, laboratories, conference rooms, nurse i exam rooms, administrative d i i i offices, ffi f stations, biohazard storage warehouses, restrooms, showers, utilities storage, copy rooms, etc. This project is anticipating LEED Silver certification. Rendering above provided by Grimm and Parker Architects. • Deer’s Head Hospital Center Kidney Dialysis Unit Addition & Renovation, Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene’s, Salisbury, Maryland WAI is providing electrical engineering design work, including fire alarm for a new state-of-the-art 7,800 sq. ft. Kidney Dialysis Unit addition to the main hospital and a renovation and reconfiguration of the existing Unit. The addition anticipates LEED Silver certification. • Fort McPherson Medical/Dental Clinic, Atlanta, Georgia An $11 million, 72,000 sq. ft. new medical facility designed for the Savannah District of the Army Corps of Engineers. WAI provided engineering services as a consultant to Ellerbe Beckett. • Baltimore Washington Medical Center, Operating Room & Surgical Support Expansion, Baltimore, Maryland WAI provided the plumbing, fire alarm, and sprinkler design services for the expansion of an operating room and surgical support. • Queen Anne’s County Emergency Center, University of Maryland Medical Systems/Shore Healthcare, Maryland WAI provided plumbing, fire alarm, and fire sprinkler for: a new 18,500 sq. ft., $6.5 million free standing 24 hour emergency facility. This medical facility houses: imaging, primary care, orthopedics, OB/GYN and psychiatry, as well as diagnostic and laboratory testing, physical and speech therapy, occupational health services and several specialty practices. This project is located on Shore Health System’s Queen Anne’s County medical campus. • University of Maryland Medical Center, Sims Center STC Rearrangements, Maryland WAI provided all plumbing design modifications including: DWV, storm, domestic water, natural and medical gases, and vacuum as required by the rearrangements. WAI also provided modifications to the existing fire alarm and sprinkler systems for this 1,300 sq. ft. temporary shock trauma simulation facility. • University of Maryland Baltimore, Bressler Research Building Second Floor Lab Renovation Baltimore, Maryland WAI is providing mechanical, electrical, and plumbing design services for this research laboratory. WAI first conducted a field investigation to ascertain general conditions. The plant capacity was 800 boiler horsepower of heating water and 950 tons of chilled water with a cooling tower in an acoustically treated screening enclosure. • Seven Slade Condominiums, Chantilly, Virginia WAI conducted a study for the replacement of the existing HVAC unit for the corridors of this eight story condominium building. The intent of the study was to concisely evaluate options for the replacement of the subject equipment; including determining if a different system approach than the existing system is more beneficial than a replacement in-kind. A significant challenge is that there are no available documentation for the existing HVAC system. • Munson Hill Towers, Falls Church, Virginia Southernmost Old Town Resorts This high rise apartment building utilizes a fountain structure as the condenser water heat rejection device for the existing 550 ton chiller plant. The owner was experiencing a number of operational problems with the fountain, including maintaining the proper condenser water supply temperature. WAI performed a feasibility study for a replacement condenser water system. • The Fort Harrison Hotel, Peer Review, Clearwater, Florida The Fort Harrison Hotel is an existing 11 story hotel in Clearwater, Florida. The hotel has 220 rooms and is estimated to be approximately 253,000 sq. ft. in floor area. A complete modernization design has recently been performed by a team of architects and engineers. The primary emphasis was on the lighting design, which included an entire new lighting system utilizing a Lutron Grafik Eye control system. With the new control system, the client has complete control over all fixtures, allowing for different scenes, special architectural effects, proper lighting ambiance, all done while saving energy. The addition of ceiling mounted spot lights allowed the parish to highlight all of the many features located on the alter.
