SEPTEMBER news 2011 ISSUE 09 Secretary for Water and Power visits NESPAK Imtiaz H. Kazi, Federal Secretary, Ministry of Water and Power and Chairman, Board of Directors of NESPAK, paid his first visit to NESPAK House, Lahore on September 5, 2011. LSE MD makes presentation Aftab Ahmad Ch., Managing Director/CEO of the Lahore Stock Exchange (LSE) Limited, paid a visit to the NESPAK House Lahore on September 26, 2011. He was welcomed by Asad I. A. Khan, MD NESPAK. Later, Aftab Ahmad Ch. made a presentation on the activities of LSE and the trading of shares. The presentation was attended by the Managing Director, Vice Presidents and GM/Heads of NESPAK divisions. Asad I. A. Khan, MD NESPAK, welcomed the Chairman and made a corporate presentation, highlighting achievements of NESPAK with special emphasis on the ongoing projects. Khan NDU delegates visit NESPAK A designated group of the National Security and War Course from the National Defence University Islamabad made a study tour of NESPAK on September 22, 2011. The group headed by Major General Naweed Zaman, Commandant War College, comprised 16 faculty members, 52 senior military officers, 17 allied officers from friendly countries and 13 joint secretary level officers from the Civil Services of Pakistan. The aim of the visit was to get first-hand knowledge about the functioning of NESPAK and its role in managing various mega projects. Asad I. A. Khan, MD NESPAK, welcomed the guests and gave them a detailed presentation on the history and functioning of NESPAK. The MD also responded to queries raised by guests during the question and answer session. After the presentation, sumptuous refreshments were served to the guests. In the end, souvenirs were exchanged between MD NESPAK and Major General Naweed Zaman. Former Principal Secretary meets MD NESPAK Saeed Mehdi, a renowned civil servant/ former Principal Secretary to former Prime Minister Mian Muhammad Nawaz Sharif, visited NESPAK House in connection with M/s MAT Technology JV, which is involved in the construction of a water supply system in Gujrat. The visit was aimed at encouraging investments from the Turkish private and public sectors initiated by Chief Minister Punjab. M anzoor Ali, Vice President Agriculture Division, visited Dubai to attend a seminar on sheet piling for Pakistani clients, consultants and contractors from September 21-23, 2011. M irza Asif Baig, Vice President WR Division along with Syed Mehar Ali, Principal Engineer WR Division, proceeded to Iran to work on the Alborz Dam Project for the period from September 25 to October 9, 2011. I mran-ul-Haq, Principal Engineer GT&GE Division, visited the Alborz Integrated Land and Water Management Project in Sari, Iran. He worked on environment and water quality related tasks of the project. T he Building Services Division arranged a series of presentations by the representatives/ distributors of the manufacturers of lifts and escalators which were attended by engineers from the BSD and the P&M Division. The presentations on the latest products and their features regarding vertical transportation were given by the Mega Elevators and Jeewajee (Pvt.) Limited. The design and selection procedures were also discussed. A one day workshop on the USAID environmental compliance procedures was arranged by the USAID Office, Islamabad, with an aim to enhance the capacity of Contracting Officer's Technical Representatives (COTR) and environmental experts of leading consultancy firms working for USAID. The tour was aimed at witnessing the pre-shipment inspection of the dual fuel, double effect absorption chillers/heaters being produced by M/s KTE-Kawasaki Thermal Engineering Company, Japan. He visited the UNESCOIHE institute for water education, Delft. Ramzan Javed held discussions with Sergio G. Salinas, a faculty member of the Urban Water and Sanitation Ramzan Javed Department regarding at UNESCO-IHE institute water treatment infrastructure in the Netherlands and IHE activities in this field. 2 NESPAK professionals and other participants at the workshop Technical Paper/ Training A technical paper of Muhammad Waqar Saleem, Sociologist GT&GE Division, on “Socio-economic Impact of Foreign Remittance In Rural Areas of Pakistan” has been published by the Training Center for International Cooperation, University of Trento, Italy during the conference on "The Migration-Development Nexus Revisited: State of the Art and Ways Ahead." The conference was organised by the Department of Sociology and Social Research, University of Trento, Italy. M s. The highlights of the training were effective construction cost development & management, contract pricing, identifying & quantifying risk, construction claims, preconstruction cost & budget evaluation, identifying & mitigating construction claims & merging technology with construction cost control. news 7th Build Asia Exhibition The 7th Build Asia 2011 Exhibition was held from September 13–15, 2011 at Karachi Expo Centre. The purpose of the event was to focus on the immense potential of the building and construction industry in Pakistan and display the latest technological advancements. IEP honours Sulehri The Institution of Engineers, Pakistan (IEP) while celebrating the Engineers' Day conferred Engr. Mahmood A. Sulehri, GM/Head Contracts Division, with the IEP National Excellence Award-2011 at a ceremony for his meritorious services to the engineering profession, especially to the Institution of Engineers Pakistan as an active fellow.
