Digital Video World:
The A/V industry is going through a transition form analog signaling to digital signaling. A wide
array of digital video ports, including DVI, HDMI, DisplayPort, and HD-SDI, are present in some
form on virtually every new component found in the A/V industry. Although digital signaling is
becoming predominant in the A/V industry, there is a wide range of analog hardware equipment
in place today. For the foreseeable future most presentation A/V systems will require a mix of
analog and digital video products.
Digital video has been in existence for over 20years. HD-SDI or SDI has been in the medical,
visualization, and computer graphics segments for over 10years, DVI was established in 1999.
The newer standards are HDMI and DisplayPort which both can carry digital video and audio.
The signals:
DVI and DisplayPort are found on many PC’s and laptops and are standard on many professional
displays and high-end projectors.
HDMI is primarily found on HDTV capable products - BlueRay Disc players, game consoles, and
satellite/cable DVR and receivers. HDMI was introduced as a consumer product, but has worked
its way into the commercial product mix.
Why Digital?
• Lower cost computers and displays - Less A/D conversion in equipments
• Digital signals are lossless, enabling the distribution of near pixel-perfect and consistent quality
images while reducing the time and effort required for system and display set-up
• A digital infrastructure can be designed to accommodate the high resolutions found in the A/V
world today. -1920x1200 and HDTV 1080p.
Challenges:
Compared to analog signals, which is robust and can perform under distress form extended cabling
distances, inadequate system design and installation, digital signals have to maintain full
signal integrity through the system. If these signals are compromised by distances, or design the
impact is more noticeable.
Digital technologies such as DVI, HDMI, and DisplayPort are primarily designed for short point-topoint
connections. Distances in these applications are relatively short. But with extenders and
Network cabling distances of up to 300ft can be achieved.
Digital video signaling have very speci"c performance and timing parameters that need to be
maintained for overall system functionality. Terms such as equalization, jitter, and reclocking replace
terms of the analog world such as-leveling and peaking devices.
In some digital video systems there is two way communication between source and display. If
this communication is interrupted, such as following a disconnection, source switch, or signal
split, image display can be delayed, or even lost completely. This communication is called EDIDExtended
Display Identi"cation Data or DRM Digital Rights Management (associated with HDCP)
High Bandwidth Digital Content Protection.
EDID
Extended Display Identi"cation Data (EDID):
EDID is a standardized meaning for a display to communicate its capabilities to a source.
The premise is for the display to communicate back to the source its operational characteristics,
such as native resolution. The source then would generate the appropriate characteristics back
to the display. This allows function between the two pieces of equipment without installer/user
confguration.
HDCP - Content Protection
Digital Rights Management - Audio and Video Signals
For digital video content protection HDCP in the most prevalent. HDCP is designed to prevent
unauthorized access of protected video content and to enforce restrictions on authorized playback.
HDCP enables video sources, such a Blu-ray disc players, PC’s, and other digital media devices
always undergo a process to protect the video from unauthorized access.
This process of HDCP authentication can serveral seconds or minutes to complete. This is a primary
reason for the preceived sluggishness during startup or switching.

HD-SDI
SDI or HD-SDI is a digital interface used for broadcast grade video. HD-SDI is standardized
in SMPTE 292M, this provides data rates up to 1.485Gbps.
SDI is a set of video standards for serial transmission of AV signals. SDI standards are primarily utilized
on professional broadcast and video production equipment, with secondary use in live
events, medical imaging, digital cinema, military training and simulation, as well as teleconference
cameras and recording devices.
Cable Design
The cable designed to handle SDI/HD-SDI signals are of the best quality and have to meet testing

HDMI is an uncompressed all digital AV interface. The digital AV signals are delivered over a single cable and connected with a small designed connector. The interface is between any AV
source, such as a set-top box, DVD, and AV receiver. HDMI is the de facto standard in HD video
(Consumer market).
HDMI provides great AV quality over analog signals especially at higher resolutions. The interface
provides a easy use, two way communication between source and display, and it is HD content
ready- HDCP.

To prevent future system failures a premium grade HDMI cable has to be used! A 22AWG or
24AWG with low capacitance and low skew will handle these higher data rates for longer distances. HDMI standards do not recommend distances of more than 10meters (33feet), but with
good solid cables, these distances can be increased significantly.

Permanent Installations: Long Runs
With more and more commercial boardroom/ classrooms wanting high bandwidth video, the limits on installing HDMI cables are high. Our SHR cables have connectors which makes it difficult to pull, there is not
an easy field installable HDMI connector, there is a possibility that low grade HDMI cables may be used in
a permanent installation. The solution is to wire the installation with a minimum of CAT6 Shielded and
upgrade to CAT6A Shielded when possible. By providing this type of cabling, the installer can chose HDMI
Extenders (TX/RX). The installation would convert the HDMI signals to run longer distances over the Network cabling, then convert it back to HDMI.
These installation can be cable managed with a simple Category 5E cable, but because of bandwidth limitations of Category 5E, future upgrades to the resolution will not be supported on these cables.

The SKR-22T is a light weight speaker that delivers clear sound with fidelity not

Termination of RJ45 Jacks and Plugs - Category 5E
IDC
All Jacks have IDC- Insulation Displacement Connections.
These connections are made with a punch down tool.
The Punch down tool displaces the insulation while the individual
cable is being pressed between two metal clips.
The metal clips make contact with the conductor.
Terminating RJ45 Jacks
1. Strip cable .750”- 1.00”- Do not damage conductors
2. Fan out the individual Pairs. Do not untwist the
individual pairs more than .500”
3. Place each wire into appropriate IDC slot color code
• Choose between T568A or T568B
4. Punch down the individual wire - Do not punch down
more than twice.
5. Place Protector Hood over the punched down wires

7. Verify connector is completely seated and cable is fully inserted
8. Squeeze handle of TL-EZRJ45PROCT
9. Remove excess wires
10. Check jacket strain relief
11. Check that contacts are all engaged
12. Check that contact dividers are not damaged
13. Check to see if both ends of the cable have been terminated

Digital Video - DVI
DVI- Digital Visual Interface
DVI is a video interface from source (PC) and a display device. This was the original standard
and product offering to replace analog VGA signaling. DVI is designed to carry uncompressed digital video data to a display. It is compatible with HDMI on the Video, but does not
carry audio signals.
DVI-D - Compatible with HDMI - Single Link and Dual Link- Dual link increases bandwidth.
Direct connection between video source and LCD monitors. Fast Connection and

DVI-A - Compatible with VGA
Used to carry DVI signals to an analog display - CRT, low budget LCD
DVI-I - Both analog and digital formats

Digital Video: Displayport
Displayport
DisplayPort is a digital display interface used to connect a video source to a display device. I
can also transmit audio, USB and other types of data forms.
DisplayPort was created to replace VGA and DVI. Unlike HDMI products DisplayPort products
are a royalty-free solution.
DisplayPort supports much of the same functionality as HDMI, it can support the HDCP content protection used in the HDMI standards. Most of the DisplayPort supporters are computer
companies such as Apple. Currently there are no DisplayPort extenders over Category Cabling. The conversion from VGA, DVI, or HDMI is provided by adapter cables.
Resolution:
DisplayPort 1.0 to 1.1 - Can support 8.64Gbps over 6ft
DisplayPort 1.2 - Has greater bandwidth capacity over HDMI - 17.28Gbps.
Mini-DisplayPort is a connection point developed by Apple. This connection is included in the
1.2 standard.
