Must a “three season room” or a “Florida Room” attached to a dwelling unit comply with the requirements of the NEC, Section 210-52 for the installation of dwelling unit receptacles? 4. If a sun room or similar room or area is constructed only with sliding panels, are dwelling unit receptacles required? ANSWER: 1. Yes. 2. A sun room attached to a dwelling unit is an “occupiable space” as defined by the BOCA National Building Code in which the majority of the exterior walls are constructed of glass material. 3. A “three season room” and a “Florida Room” are equivalent to a sun room as defined above. Therefore, they must comply with NEC, Section 210-52. 4. NEC, Section 210-52 excludes sliding panels in exterior walls from being used in the determination that dwelling unit receptacles are required. However, the interior wall of the sun room or similar room must comply with the requirements for dwelling unit receptacles. Eric M. Mays, P.E., C.B.O. Building Official
