Meeting Overview
We are pleased to continue a joint symposium between the North Carolina Section of the Materials
Research Society, Carolinas Central Chapter of ASM International, and Mid-Atlantic Chapter of American
Vacuum Society. The meeting is expected to draw about 100 participants, both locally and from the
surrounding region. Topics in materials science, processing, characterization, and biomaterials will be
presented by both invited and selected student contributions.

The meeting will be held on North Carolina State University Centennial Campus in Engineering
Building 1, Room 1011 www.ncsu.edu/campus_map/centennial.htm
Meeting Program
The ASM/MRS/AVS-NC Program will feature a morning session and an afternoon session. A student
poster session will also be held in the afternoon. Registration and poster setup is from 8:30 to 9:15 AM.
The symposium is scheduled to be completed by 5:00 PM.

Several student contributed papers will be considered for oral presentation and will be allotted 10 minutes. A student poster
session will also be held; contributions from students on research results, even at intermediate stages of completion, are
strongly encouraged. Please indicate whether your abstract should be considered as a paper or as a poster. Electronic
abstracts are required (please use Times New Roman font in 12 point). Prizes will be awarded to the best student oral
presentation and poster presentation. Poster size available will be 48 inches by 36 inches. Please send electronic abstracts

Silver - Its History and Importance as a
Collectible Precious Metal
Dr. Keith Dawes
Dr. Dawes is a Teaching Professor at NCSU in the Department of
Materials Science and Engineering, his specialty is in the area of
polymeric materials. The talk will, however, cover the history of
silver, some interesting properties of silver and the collectibility
of silver, both modern and antique. The history of hallmarking
and which countries use this method of identification will be
discussed. The different silver standards used throughout the
world will also be covered. Examples of some antique silver
pieces will be shown and a little tutorial on how one can date
these pieces and identify where they were made and by whom.
Dr. Dawes and his wife, Frances, have been collectors of silver for
several years, specializing in British silver. If you have any piece
of silver which needs identifying, please bring it along to the
presentation and we will try and help you!

Lubrication and degradation of interfaces in extreme
environments
Interfacial degradation limits the performance of devices at most length scales. An
example of a large scale device is an electromagnetic launcher (EMLs), which uses
large current densities to generate Lorentz forces that can be used to launch
projectiles at velocities as high as 20 km/s. Although the propulsion physics is well
understood, the interfacial degradation, which limits the reliability of launch, is not.
Similarly, the interfaces between moving parts of Silicon based micro-electricalmechanical systems (MEMs) need to be constantly lubricated for reliable use.
Traditional lubricants often protect the device in the initial stages of use but their
performance quickly deteriorates with repetitive cycling. Mitigating the degradation
issues of these devices remains the major obstacle to long term reliability. In this
talk, I will present areas of current research that use multi-scale simulations to
address degradation issues in MEMs and EMLs.

Carbon nanotubes have many unique electronic and physical
properties and are an order of magnitude stronger than any existing
engineering materials. I’ll present the synthesis of long carbon
nanotubes (CNTs), long CNTs with intramolecular junctions, long
CNT arrays, the super strong CNT fibers, and CNT cottons. These
CNTs were synthesized using catalytic chemical-vapour-deposition.
Their growth mechanisms will be discussed. We have produced the
longest individual CNTs, and the strongest CNT fibers with specific
strength many times higher than current engineering fibers. Potential
applications of these CNTs and CNT fibers include electronic
devices, chemical and bio sensors, solar cells, filters, nanocomposites, body armor, space shuttles, airplanes, etc.
