Welcome to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church
In today’s 2nd reading, Paul makes an
insightful statement regarding our world:
“For the world in its present form is
passing away.” This is the insight of a
mystic, everything we see and experience is changing. This is also the insight of a philosopher, things have a
beginning and ending. The question then arises, is
there something that doesn’t change? Is there something/someone we can turn our lives over to which is
stable and enduring? These questions are faith questions, they lead to an absolute which is God. For
Christians, Jesus is the One who leads us back to
God, Jesus is the One who offers us stability in a
changing world.
In today’s Gospel, Jesus speaks to us His message
of repentance: “The kingdom of God is at hand. Repent, and believe in the gospel.” Jesus is telling us
that it is the gospel which we can trust to give us life
and stability. There are many things that are put before us as places we can find life and meaning, however, we believe they are to be found in the gospel
and teaching of Jesus. We work at being Christian
people every day as this is a never ending task.
In our 1st reading, we hear something very important about the preaching of Jonah to the Ninevites.
“When God saw by their actions how they turned from
their evil way, he repented of the evil he had threatened to do to them, he did not carry it out,” How do
we know what we believe? How do we know what is
important for us? How do we know what provides
meaning and direction for us? It is really quite simple,
look to your actions.
My best to you, Fr. Sheridan
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK

are thankful for the benefits we have received from
Catholic education. Catholic schools have greatly enriched our Catholic Church. We are especially aware

When your Armed Services member returns to civilian life, please let us know so that we can remove his or her name from our list.
Thank you for your cooperation.
The environment in the church here at St.
Francis Xavier, marks clearly that we have moved on
from the Nativity of the Lord to the early ministry of the
Lord. The screen background of the nativity scene
has been removed and the beautiful marble Sacred
Heart statue is highlighted with light. And then, of
course, the color of green reminds us that we are
again in “Ordinary Time.”
The gospel reading today is from Mark. Interestingly, the Gospel of Mark does not have a description of the birth of Jesus. It is best to understand Mark
not as giving us information about the life of Jesus but
as a gospel created by an independent and fascinating theologian who crafted this story of Jesus to communicate deep theological insight about Christian life
in Christ. How Mark does this is to take us deep into
an understanding of the two primary sacraments of
the earliest Christian Churches; the immersion in water known as Baptism and the sacred meal known as
the Lord’s Supper. With this in mind, we also should
be aware that the primary evangelist for this liturgical
year, Year B, is Mark.

Our Journey to Immaculee Concepcion in Gallette Chambon on December
Jody Weschler & Jeff Later travelled to Haiti for the Feast of the Immaculate Conception celebration with our sharing parish on
December 8th. Signs of continued progress were apparent with the new airport terminal completed and a traffic signal exiting the
airport. However, the living conditions in Port Au Prince and surrounding area remain an eye opener for anyone traveling from
another country. How fortunate we are.
As difficult as it is to experience the poverty, the ceremony we attended on December 8th was an unforgettable spiritual experience.
During the almost 4 hour mass the music, enthusiasm and pride of the Haitian people are all heartwarming. Nothing could top the
offertory collection which was a parade of gifts by about 100 parishioners giving back from their land. As the choir sang, bags of
rice and flour were carried to the altar. It was quite a sight to see people with baskets on their heads holding goats and turkeys
walking up the aisle!
After mass we visited with the school children and teachers. We saw the crowded lean to class rooms. We saw great progress with
the completed Grist Mill, recently planted breadfruit trees baring fruit, and the expanded garden next to the church. Since December of 2010 so many good things have happened and so much more progress will happen thanks to the continued generosity of the
St. Francis Xavier community.

Important information regarding communion visits and
pastoral care of the sick for the homebound and hospitalized.
Please read carefully.
Your spiritual needs are very important to the staff at
St. Francis. To insure that you received the desired spiritual care if
you are hospitalized or homebound with illness, please assist us by
providing us with the following.
Hospital:
If you would like anointing prior to a scheduled surgery,
please call the parish office to schedule an anointing with a priest.
You may also receive anointing at the hospital when there is an
emergency.
When you are admitted to the hospital it is critical that you
or a loved one identifies your religious affiliation, your parish name
and your desire for pastoral care and communion visits.
The patient may also call the Ministry of Care line to
request communion at the hospital. A minister of care will make
sure the hospital is informed of this request.
Homebound:
Trained ministers of Care are available to bring
communion to our parish sick and homebound. Ministers also visit
local assisted living and nursing care homes. To schedule a visit,
please call the Ministry of Care line at: 847 256-2273 press 0 and a
Minister of Care will return your call.
