The show also has a new date: September 2, a Wednesday instead of the usual Thursday, so please save this in your diaries now. And as you’ll see from the new collections on the following pages, the spring launches are some of the strongest for some time, full of fantastic new looks for interiors. As F4W designers comment in their trends forecasts on page 4, many of these new ranges bring a fresh twist to a variety of wallcovering styles, adding exciting and colourful ideas to the great choice of designs to suit all tastes. From our quick survey of what’s starting to go well for 2015, many retailers are reporting good sales for the new glitzy wallpapers that highlight glitter and sparkle, showing once again how specialists can add value by being quick off the mark with the latest fashion looks. This ability to respond fast is also flagged up on page 6 by Derek Holden, managing director of Holden Decor, who answers the latest of our company questionnaires. Looking at the wallcoverings scene for 2015, he says: “The main challenge for independent retailers is to respond quickly to new products and trends, and provide the products, service and advice that consumers require.” And it’s this passion for wallcoverings plus dedication to customer service that comes through strongly in your comments below. Happy spring selling! Christina Gregory, editor Mixology is one of four key themes from the 2015 Heimtextil Trends. Heimtextil Trends for 2015 – and beyond The chaotic-looking clash of patterns and colours above was displayed in the new Theme Park at Heimtextil 2015 (14 -17 January, Frankfurt) to illustrate Mixology, one of four key themes in the Fair’s Trend forecasts for this year and beyond. Within the overarching 2015 Trend concept of Experience, the themes are: Sensory: The wellbeing theme – creating home products to appeal to our growing interest in tactile and sensory experiences. For example, using new technology for screen-printing or dyeing paper and textiles with ink that can micro-encapsulate a choice of fragrances from lemon to eucalyptus. Or embedding paper with colours that can react to sunlight and interact with light to change hues. Mixology: Inter-cultural exchange – this is all about experimentation and the interaction of different identities. Patterns, prints and colours collide with each other. African tribal design meets 3-D rave motifs, retro style mixes with futuristic, digital with organic, to create a feeling of independence from any kind of conformity. Discovery: Predicting the future – designers are paying increasing attention to our planet’s valuable resources, investigating the properties of lunar rock and meteorites as well as observing the cosmos. Light plays a key role, dazzling and illuminating or playing tricks with the eye. Memory: Reflection and re-evaluation – people are looking for a simpler, purer and more ethically correct way of life, away from the stress of more consumption towards a genuine sense of wellbeing. For the home, designers will combine tradition with innovation to create new timeless values. More information: www.heimtextil-theme-park.com MORE glitter AND SPARKLE… With glittering, sparkling wallcoverings among the best sellers for many retailers this spring, it’s interesting to see how a look that started life at the top end of the trade has become a mass-market fashion. Wallcoverings with sparkling highlights have been popular for a while, and glitter plains continue to sell well. Now the latest launches create the ultimate in glitz with super-shiny effects using reflective foil and metallic inks. The glitzy look of Fine Decor’s new Glitter Textures, above, was developed using holographic foil initially for its high-end pattern book customers. Says design director Marc Roylance: “Following the trend for all things that glisten, we feel the holographic foil gives an effect that regular glitters and metallics cannot achieve.” Muriva’s marketing manager Anne Mader explains how its new Sparkle range creates the ultimate luxe backdrop by using heavyweight vinyl as a base for highly reflective foil covered by metallic ink and large glitter particles. Whether glitter is used to add a subtle extra dimension or for allover ‘bling’, more sparkling wallcoverings are on their way. Holden Decor expects to have an extended glitter range by Easter, Debona is planning to add to its new Crystal range of encrusted glitter effects, and more Glitz and Glitter Textures are to come from Fine Decor. HOW HAS 2015 STARTED FOR YOU? We asked retailers for their comments on business so far this year. Bruce Bannerman, Bannerman’s Colour Studio, Perth and Dundee Last year was reasonably good for us, and I see this continuing, but I don’t think the growth will be on the same scale as during the last couple of years. We’ll probably have to work harder in 2105 to achieve it, and our margins will be more eroded. The choice of wallpapers is vast, but many people fear making a wrong decision, and this is where F 4 W. c o . u k I hope we can give them some confidence and reassurance. George Shepherd, Lancashire Wallpaper, Rochdale Business been quite buoyant for us so far this year, and we’re optimistic – if you’re not, you shouldn’t be in business! There’s never been such a great choice of products, and people are keen to use them. This goes across the age groups – including younger people, especially once they’ve used a nonwoven paper, and found how easy it is to hang. One of the big changes we’ve been seeing recently is that our sales are being spread more through the week, so we’re not as busy at the weekend. Our internet side is busier and busier, but margins are being squeezed. The store is holding its own: we revamped our top-end section with new lighting and flooring, and this is starting to pay dividends. We’re now putting new stands into the rest of the store. Susan Johnson, Wear Valley Decorating Centre, Coundon Business hasn’t been too bad so far this year, but it’s early days yet. People are ready for something fresh and new – |2| they’ve been coming in to look and take samples, now we need to convert them into customers! Competition from online sellers is always a problem, so we try to promote the service we offer – people can’t get the same advice and help when they shop online. Paul Holden, Decor Supplies, Lichfield Last year was one of our best yet, but 2015 has started off a bit sluggish. We’ve been doing a lot of business online at the lower end of the wallpaper market, and this is where there’s so much competition and margins are very Issue 7 | Spring 2015 tight. So we’ve had a re-think, and decided to change direction this year, to go more to the top end in what we offer. existing room furnishings, as well as brighter fashion-led products for younger people who are looking for something different. Shaun O’Neill, Home Decor Centre, Omagh Jan Steele, J J Stephenson, Leeds Jim Gallagher, Freemans Wallpaper Land, Wyke, Bradford We’re reasonably optimistic about 2015, although we’d like to see some new wallcovering designs that might break the mould a bit: we’re getting fed up with the same things. We want designs that are specifically for the UK, maybe smaller-scale florals and geometrics, in warmer colours. And more neutrals that can be used to freshen up I think this year will be tough, but I believe if you’ve got the right products at the right prices, there are good opportunities for independent specialists to do well. Even when money is tight, people want to improve their homes, and wallpaper can make such a big difference. Customers like to see something new and different, and I think they are I think 2015 will be a tough year, both for the economy and for wallpaper. I think people who do have the money are buying wallpaper mainly on whether they like it rather than just on price, but price is a factor. We’re seeing less of this type of customer now: they tend to be an older generation who’ve been used to decorating regularly. In general, younger F 4 W. c o . u k taking more care over choosing what to buy. We’re also selling more paste the wall papers now. |3| people haven’t learned decorating skills from their parents. Shirley Richards, Everton Glass, Liverpool I think things are picking up, although it’s a bit difficult just now for us to say how we’re finding business, because we’ve recently moved to new premises to show all our decorating materials together - and I’m pleased to say the customers are coming in! We’re now selling more of the expensive papers, and people are choosing more from pattern books - it’s mainly the traditional designs that are still selling well. Issue 7 | Spring 2015 Designers’ key trends Key decor trends for spring/summer 2015 from leading F4W designers 2015 gets off to a great start with lots of new – and contrasting - looks for walls, with a big focus on glitter, glamour, sparkle and metallic effects. Colour gets fresh emphasis from bright bold jungle patterns and exotic botanicals, while animal skins reappear. And rich-looking traditional designs get another turn in the spotlight as the popular TV adaptation of Wolf Hall gives a new twist to heritage inspiration and period elegance. David Shaw, designer, A S Creation UK Exotic garden: Fruity and exotic, this colourful trend highlights delicate botanic paintings, flamboyant Hawaiian flowers, orchid blossoms, tropical palm leaves and floral watercolours. Colours are bold: radiant yellow, vibrant green and organic brown, with bright fuchsia and teal highlights. Mystic charm: Inspired by the magnificent artistic and stylistic periods of the past, this opulent trend brings glamour to shabby chic and baroque-style designs with sumptuous bouquets of flowers and delicate floral trails. Oxydised surfaces: Contrasts of splendour with decay. An impression of greater depth of space is created by using copper, silver and gold motifs and contrasting layers. New vision: With design elements from modern technology and the digital society, this trend highlights fascinating optical effects, geometric shapes and forms, strongly contoured textures and imaginative mesh structures. Shimmering and powdery shades meet bright pop colours, bringing a sense of movement to any interior. Fine Decor’s reversehang Tie-dye Stripe. F 4 W. c o . u k Ginevra from Holden Decor’s Valentina. Jungle Fever from A S Creation’s Dekor Natur collection. Vicki Ellmore, design manager, Fine Decor Scandi chic: Craft inspired hand-made effects that mix natural themes of simple florals and leaves with softened geometrics and markmaking semi-plains. Hand-printed effects on linen grounds in soft Scandinavian colour palettes of warm greys with accents of ochre and teal. Ethnic fusion: A melange of global ethnic themes. North African Moorish inspired paisleys, Jacobeans and geometric tile effects in sumptuous earth tones of terracotta and ochre. Sub-Saharan themes of geometric tribal prints, weaves and tie-dye effects, as well as the return of animal skins to add an extra touch of drama. Industrial upcycle: Inspired by the modern breed of homeowners who are re-designing on a budget, but want to create an individual look, this trend is more salvage yard than |4| antique chic. Backdrops of brick and reclaimed wood effects, with novelty features such as antique bicycles, vintage printers’ blocks, and old industrial signage. Vintage chic: Feminine and very sophisticated, featuring soft watercolour French-inspired florals, lace patterns and feathers, in an opulent yet dusky colour palette. Soft pinks, mauves and warm greys are combined with accents of metallics and glitters to create a chic and appealing trend. Botanist: Displays of flora and fauna that remind us of museum Victorian collections. Nature-inspired beautiful botanical florals, butterflies, birds and bees are reinvented and refreshed. This garden-themed trend features a vibrant colour palette of fresh greens, pinks and coral, ideal for spring selling. Tropical: This trend creates an exotic, fun and vibrant feel. The colour palette is vivid and dramatic, with emerald greens, hot pinks and reds combined with jungle foliage, birds of paradise and flamingos. Issue 7 | Spring 2015 Nicola Bradshaw, design manager, Holden Decor Jungle fever: An exotic mix of colourful jungle blooms with vivid birds, feathers, and spiky grass palms on black, teal or navy grounds. Travel nostalgia: Elements of this look add a new vibe to the jungle theme. Oriental scenes: Together with cherry blossoms, these are making a comeback. Adding delicate birds gives designs a fresh look. Botanical: Linear detail of foliage, birds, branches and fauna with a sophisticated layered layout updates this slightly historical-looking trend. Whimsical and enchanting elements also move this look on, telling a story with every design. Grand damasks: Opulence and a contemporary feeI are added to this classic look with metallics, glitter, vignettes and texture. Textures and animal prints: With metallics and glitter, these bring glitz and glamour to 2015, especially leopard skin, marble and feathers. English country garden: This trend is still in abundance, featuring small ditzy florals together with beautiful painterly flowers. Adding abstract paint effects modernises and introduces a fresh look to a traditional theme. Geometrics: With their ability to coordinate with everything, the colourful geometrics sit with other trends. They add simple style as well as introducing a statement that can be complex, yet beautifully harmonious. Key colours: Neutral greys with a hint of lime, pastel palettes, aubergine and soft shades of olive and blue are given a new lease of life. There is also a strong dramatic look, mixing colours such as pinks, purples and greens with aqua and turquoise, as well as black and white with a splash of red. Valerie Mader, design manager, Muriva A blend of different styles: This is what 2015 is all about. With our Baroque Scrolls, for example, we have combined an ornate historic damask design in black with our new Sparkle textures as a background. In colours such as hot pink and teal, this creates a funky and stylish luxe look full of ‘bling’, while the softer tones of silver, gold and mink have a sumptuous elegance that simply cannot be achieved with matt paper. Opulent metallics: Still a huge trend, this year they will continue to feature strongly in home decorating. Metallics are used either on their own or in combination with natural materials, such as wood or stone tiles. Antique tapestry and jacquard: The latest wallcoverings give a nod to these traditional effects and designs, but re-style them for a contemporary look. A good example is our new Esme, a classic leaf scroll printed on metallic foil and enhanced with distressed elements to evoke the preciousness of a luxurious heirloom painting. Paradise Birds from Rasch UK. F 4 W. c o . u k Muriva’s new Baroque Scrolls. Vicki Kitson, design manager, Rasch UK Exotic botanical: Encompassing tropical fauna, flora and foliage, this is a key trend for 2015 that we are taking inspiration from at Rasch UK. The graphic botanical prints, ferns, insects, tropical birds and bold hothouse palms create maximum impact. Fusion: A trend mixing the old with the new, this global style features influences rich in cultural diversity, and is created by using a combination of styles, materials and patterns. Craftsmanship, collectables and bold ethnic prints give a striking look to the home. Industrial: This trend takes |5| inspiration from the environment, with natural materials such as granite, stone and luxurious marbles. The use of concrete creates a contemporary look. Faux woods from pale and natural to rustic, mixed with colours of muted pebble shades, greys and off-whites are key to this simple laid-back theme. Metallic accents of copper and gold mixed with verdigris green are a strong influence. Period elegance: A timeless trend, using heritage patterns, sumptuous velvet and silk, worn leather, walnut, parquet, marble, faceted glass and chrome effects to create a bespoke look. Monochrome prints, metallic highlights, glitter and beading embellishments evoke an elegant era. Issue 7 | Spring 2015 F4W supplier Continuing our series of interviews with F4W suppliers, Derek Holden, managing director of Holden Decor, answers questions about the Darwen company Learning to hang the latest papers Professional painting and decorating courses are currently well supported by school leavers, according to the Painting and Derek Holden, managing director of Holden Decor. Q: When was Holden Decor established, what is your business approach, and how would you describe the development of the company since its early days? A: Holden Decor was established in 1991, and initially we concentrated on developing stockselling designs for independent and multiple retailers. From the start it’s been important for us to control the critical aspects of wallpaper supply - the development of designs from concept to engraving - whilst managing the sales, distribution and stock control functions. This allowed us to call on virtually unlimited capacity and enabled our management team to concentrate on the most critical aspect of the business – design. Q: How would you describe the recent development of the company? A: Exciting but testing. Our recent move into international markets has meant that we have had to be even more imaginative in our design development, but this experience has had truly positive effects on our UK products. Q: Which sectors of the market does Holden Decor mainly cater for? A: Our main focus is still very much on the UK mass market, creating products for independent and multiple retailers, but in recent years we have also developed high-end room-lot Siena Gold from Holden Decor’s new Valentina collection. collections, which has enabled us to approach overseas markets who are keen on British design. Q: What are your most popular ranges? A: Opus Heavyweight Italian Vinyl is our best selling brand. Opus designs are created in our own studio, engraved at enormous expense, and manufactured in Italy to the highest standards. We also continue to have great success with our Statement and K2 wallpaper brands, along with our Tiling on a Roll products. Q: Where are the majority of your products made and designed? A: All are designed in our studio by our eight experienced designers. Opus is manufactured in Italy, and our wallpapers and expanded vinyls are printed in the UK, Belgium, France and Germany. Escape to Paradise from Holden Decor’s new Fusion collection. F 4 W. c o . u k Paper Palace wins HDRA Retailer of the Year Award 2014 Decorating Association Q: What do you look for when introducing new collections, and how many collections are you offering currently? A: Innovation. We constantly research the latest trends in wallpaper, home accessories and furnishings and convert these ideas into exciting |6| yet commercial wallcovering concepts, usually with a few interesting twists! We currently offer 22 room-lot collections and many UK-only stock designs. Q: What innovations or company achievements are you most proud of? A: The growth of the UK Italian vinyl market with Opus has been a significant achievement, but I am most proud of the team we have assembled at Holden Decor. Q: How do you see the UK wallcoverings scene today? A: The multiple retail scene is no longer completely dominated by the DIY chains, as the discounters have become progressively more active. The main challenge for independent retailers is to respond quickly to new products and trends, and provide the products, service and advice that consumers require. Finally, the internet now provides the biggest conundrum, with no supplier or retailer being immune from its challenges and opportunities. Holden Decor: 01254 773114 www.holdendecor.co.uk Issue 7 | Spring 2015 A number of further education colleges across the country are active in offering local schools taster sessions to find out more about their courses, including decorating. A good example is Hugh Baird College in Bootle, Liverpool, which runs a range of courses in painting and decorating leading to Construction Diploma qualifications, and offers regular taster events for schools in the area. From its total intake of around 6,500 students, aged from 14 upwards, 70 are currently studying painting and decorating on one-year courses at three levels. Each level includes standalone units teaching practical and theoretical skills in wallpapering, from preparation and hanging lining and embossed papers to applying wide-width vinyls and other specialist papers at Level Three. The college offers plenty of support for all who take part in its study programme, which includes work experience and skills in communication, as well as maths and English qualifications. Programme leader Jim Smith says the Construction department’s students really enjoy learning wallpaper skills. He told us: “We’re seeing a much more switched-on attitude from students across all the courses we offer, with raised awareness of what’s expected in the industry. Our decorating students are very interested in hanging patterned and specialist papers, maybe because wallpaper is back in fashion now.” Jim adds that the number of apprentices attending the college has grown dramatically over the past couple of years: of the current intake of painting and decorating students, 16 are apprentices with NVQ qualifications who are employed and Programme leader Jim Smith, left, with Level 1 Painting and Decorating student Phillip Shields. studying alongside school leavers. The growth in apprentice numbers is no doubt encouraged by the strong links the college has with local employers and the community through a variety of projects, ranging from work experience and decoration of community centres to working with local charities. And the college is very happy to accept some charity itself in the form of donations of spare wallpaper! “Anything would be welcome,” says Jim. “Thankfully we do get a lot of donations, but we’re always pleased to have more. The companies who support us by providing materials are not just ensuring students have more variety when they’re learning, but are giving them the opportunity to work with the latest wallpapers, which expands their skills and knowledge to prepare them for the workplace.” l If you have any spare rolls of wallpaper or other materials you would like to donate to the college, please email james.smith@hughbaird.ac.uk Congratulations to Andy and Sally Round of Paper Palace, Stourbridge, winners of the Home Decoration Retailer of the Year Award 2014. Andy, centre, and Sally are pictured above with the award, presented last September by Stewart Munro, left, of Marchmont Hardware, Edinburgh, chairman of the Home Decoration Retailers Association, at the Autumn Fair, National Exhibition Centre, Birmingham. The HDRA has presented its annual awards for the past ten years to recognise and reward excellence in the home decoration industry. One of the comments that helped Paper Palace win the award was: “Andy & Sal always strive to do the best for their customers while remaining professional at all times. Their focus on customer service has seen their business thrive. They are a joy to work with.” Paper Palace celebrated its 20th anniversary last year, and is a strong family business: Andy’s wife and his father are both involved in the shop, which offers a wide selection of wallpapers, including over 500 pattern books to choose from, and also runs a successful website.
