ABOUT THE SEMINAR: ADVISORY Herbal technology, especially on medicine development, is the oldest system of medical COMMITTEE: science in the world including India. Nowadays, this technology has emphasized emerging role to produce natural dyes, nutraceuticals, bio adsorbent, bio fertilizers, bio pesticides, etc. The modern concept of herbal medicine development has explored by introducing rapid LCMS and preparative HPLC-based separation and characterization of bioactive herbal fractions and isolated phytocompounds. High-throughput robotic screening of those fractions for ethnopharmacological investigation and herbal adjuvants for successful drug delivery, insilico drug design from phyto-molecules etc are pioneer approaches. The outcome of such effort has developed pioneer herbal medicine such as aspirin (from willow bark), digoxin (from foxglove), quinine (from cinchona bark), and morphine (from the opium poppy), taxol (taxus brevifolia), vincristine (vinca flowers), curcumin (turmeric rhizome) like phytocompounds to manage inflammation, pain, cancer disorders. Ginseng, Withania somnifera, Ginkgo biloba, St John's wort, tulsi, gulancha have applied as adoptogen, antidiabetic, and antidepressants. There are many polyherbal formulations, like Triphala Churna, muci-bael, Health booster tonic and skin ointments containing Aloe-Vera, Arnica, Calendula, Haritaki, Amalaki, Fenugreek, Medicago sativa, Euphorbia hirta etc have launched in the market. This year, Nobel Prize in medicine has been awarded to three scientists for their pioneer discovery of artemisinin from herbal plants (Artemisia annua) for the effective treatment management against roundworm and malaria. Herbs derived different nutraceuticals like prebiotics and probiotics, vitamins, hormone, aminoacids and PUFA helps to fight and prevent against infectious diseases and ageing processes. Herbal nutraceuticals provide those metabolomes as prophylactic or preventive agents, in contrast to drugs, which are active chemical substances used for pre-protection or to treat an illness. As per WHO, over 80% world’s population (4.3 billion people) rely upon such traditional plant-based systems of medicine as phytochemicals, nutritional constituents or as functional foods. Herbs derived macro and micronutrients, proteins, fats, carbohydrates, amino acids, vitamins or minerals necessary for normal metabolism play a crucial role to prevent the diseases and act as a health booster, growth supplements. Herbs derived nutraceuticals agents, used in the commercial market are Vitamin C, E and carotenoids, lycopene, resveratrol, soa-been foods, chywanprash, inulin prebiotics, spirulina probiotics etc. Utilisation and application of herbs derived natural colouring agent, bio-fuels, bio-fertilizers, bio-pesticides and bio-adsorbent plays an important role to develop modern technology oriented civilisation. Numerous herbs like Achyranthes aspera, mentha, banana, and Emblica officinalis, due to adsorbent phytochemicals are being evoked in removing the polluting and toxic heavy metals ion from foods, waste waters and drinking water. Dry neem seed extract, curcuminoids gave 100% inhibition of mycelial growth. Curcuminoids, the major colouring constituents of Curcuma longa (turmeric) rhizome powder, comprise of three related curcumins (I–III). Citronellal oil has used for controlling the pests and insects. Vitex negundo is being used for pest control. Natural pure colouring matter extracted from numerous herbs like hibiscus rosasinensis, marigold, curcuma longa, tomato, henna, jatropha are used into different pharmaceutical medicine, food preparations, colouring of the biocompatible industrial product etc. Aim: 1. to encourage active participation of young scholars of our nation 2. COMMITTEE: ABOUT THE UNIVERSITY: ADVISORY COMMITTEE: Assam University came into existence through Assam (Central) University Act, 1989(Established under an Act of Parliament). It was established in 1994, since then the University is becoming an excellent temple of learning in both basic and applied sciences along with arts and commerce and business studies. The campus, situated in Dorgakona, about 20 km from Silchar, is set amid sprawling hillocks, a typical hillock, a typical landscape in the North East. The campus in an area of 600 acres surrounded by lakes and hammock provides an ideal environment for academic pursuit. Silchar city is being the gateway to the entire Southern part of North East India. It is the hub of commercial activities and is known for its history as the Tea capital of Southern Assam, too. The city is well connected by airways and road connectivity is also good. The University puts great emphasis on research through its faculty and students. Students undertake different research projects to help society and local people belonging to below poverty line in addressing relevant issues and solving burning problems faced by them. The University has sixteen schools on major disciplines. There are 35 Departments under the Sixteen Schools. University offers a plethora of opportunities to its students enabling them in achieving success in their life. ABOUT THE DEPARTMENT: The Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences is one of the pioneering Departments that started ADVISORY COMMITTEE: functioning from July 2011. It was established as the first Department offering Pharmacy Degree in South Assam and second in the Assam state as Government organisation. The department although is in its infancy stage, but it is growing stage. It possesses a 2nd highest rank in terms of craze related to UG admission in the University and Job prospect among the final year students is also remarkable. The first batch of pharmaceutical graduates of the department achieved the very good job in the various distinguished pharmaceutical company. Few students take admission in PG programme at different esteemed Institutes. The thrust of the Department is to develop capabilities among the students for analyzing fashionable drug, cosmetics, other pharmaceuticals agents and exploration of the traditional system of treatment of various ethnic groups in this region. So it can potentiate them to make correct and relevant skill for the pharmaceutical product for therapy and in other socioeconomical eco-friendly application.
