Private School Review Report:
ACG Senior College
1
Background
The Chief Review Officer has a statutory duty to report on the performance of private schools
throughout New Zealand.
Section 35I of the Education Act 1989, requires the Education Review Office (ERO) to review fully
registered private schools, and to report to the Ministry of Education on whether each school
continues to meet the criteria for full registration.
This review report was prepared in accordance with standard procedures approved by the Chief
Review Officer.
2
Criteria for Registration
ACG Senior College is a secondary school in the centre of Auckland city, catering for students from
Year 11 to Year 13. Students enrol from a wide area across Auckland. Ninety international students
also attend. It is part of the Academic Colleges Group of schools.
The college specialises in offering subject courses based on programme requirements for Cambridge
International Examination (CIE), the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) and the New Zealand
National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA). A variety of pathways is available for
students to gain entry to both New Zealand and overseas universities.
The school has suitable premises, staffing, equipment, curriculum and standards of tuition, as
defined in the Education Act 1989 and described in the school’s prospectus. The ACG chief executive
ensures that the ACG executive council are well informed about school operations and student
achievement.
Systems for property maintenance and health and safety are well established and guided by agreed
policies and procedures. Since ERO’s 2011 report, changes and improvements in the college have
included refurbishment and the substantial extension of provision for information and
communication technologies.
Suitable staffing is recruited to provide specialist subject tuition for three years of senior, secondary
learning. All staff are appropriately qualified and registered as New Zealand teachers. Teachers are
well supported to improve their professional capability, particularly in relation to student success in
international qualifications. The principal has refined processes for teacher appraisal in the light of
the new Education Council requirements.
The school’s curriculum is broad and varied. A range of information, including the prospectus,
newsletters, surveys and the college website informs families and caregivers about the curriculum.
Students’ academic goals and pathways are carefully planned with parents, caregivers and the
college’s academic staff, so that students are able to follow learning pathways that reflect their
interests and goals.

The college has a focus on service to others as part of their curriculum. Students make good use of
the many leadership opportunities offered to develop life skills. Community events and activities are
regularly led and organised by students.
The quality of tuition is very good. Students are coached and mentored to be lifelong learners
through an effective tutorial system. Many enter the tertiary system with relevant qualifications, and
justified confidence and optimism for the future.
College managers have attested that they comply with the provisions of section 35G of the Education
Act 1989 in respect to their being fit and proper persons to manage the school.

Provision for international students
The college is a signatory to the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students (the
Code) established under section 238F of the Education Act 1989. The college has attested that it
complies with all aspects of the Code. At the time of this review there were 90 international
students attending the college.
ERO’s investigations confirm that the college’s systems for reviewing its provision for international
students are thorough and effective. School leaders regularly monitor provision of students’
academic progress and pastoral care. There is increasing provision for students to gain proficiency in
English. Students are involved at all levels of college life and enjoy access to the city community and
its resources for learning. They are able to become involved in a variety of recreational and cultural
