ACG Senior College Auckland CBD Confirmed Private School Review Report Ko te Tamaiti te Pūtake o te Kaupapa The Child – the Heart of the Matter Private School Review Report: ACG Senior College 1 Background The Chief Review Officer has a statutory duty to report on the performance of private schools throughout New Zealand. Section 35I of the Education Act 1989, requires the Education Review Office (ERO) to review fully registered private schools, and to report to the Ministry of Education on whether each school continues to meet the criteria for full registration. This review report was prepared in accordance with standard procedures approved by the Chief Review Officer. 2 Criteria for Registration ACG Senior College is a secondary school in the centre of Auckland city, catering for students from Year 11 to Year 13. Students enrol from a wide area across Auckland. Ninety international students also attend. It is part of the Academic Colleges Group of schools. The college specialises in offering subject courses based on programme requirements for Cambridge International Examination (CIE), the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) and the New Zealand National Certificate of Educational Achievement (NCEA). A variety of pathways is available for students to gain entry to both New Zealand and overseas universities. The school has suitable premises, staffing, equipment, curriculum and standards of tuition, as defined in the Education Act 1989 and described in the school’s prospectus. The ACG chief executive ensures that the ACG executive council are well informed about school operations and student achievement. Systems for property maintenance and health and safety are well established and guided by agreed policies and procedures. Since ERO’s 2011 report, changes and improvements in the college have included refurbishment and the substantial extension of provision for information and communication technologies. Suitable staffing is recruited to provide specialist subject tuition for three years of senior, secondary learning. All staff are appropriately qualified and registered as New Zealand teachers. Teachers are well supported to improve their professional capability, particularly in relation to student success in international qualifications. The principal has refined processes for teacher appraisal in the light of the new Education Council requirements. The school’s curriculum is broad and varied. A range of information, including the prospectus, newsletters, surveys and the college website informs families and caregivers about the curriculum. Students’ academic goals and pathways are carefully planned with parents, caregivers and the college’s academic staff, so that students are able to follow learning pathways that reflect their interests and goals. Students make good use of the many leadership opportunities offered to develop life skills. Community events and activities are regularly led and organised by students. The quality of tuition is very good. Students are coached and mentored to be lifelong learners through an effective tutorial system. Many enter the tertiary system with relevant qualifications, and justified confidence and optimism for the future. College managers have attested that they comply with the provisions of section 35G of the Education Act 1989 in respect to their being fit and proper persons to manage the school. 3 Other Obligations Very good systems are in place to assure the board that its statutory obligations are being met. 4 Other Matters Provision for international students The college is a signatory to the Code of Practice for the Pastoral Care of International Students (the Code) established under section 238F of the Education Act 1989. The college has attested that it complies with all aspects of the Code. At the time of this review there were 90 international students attending the college. ERO’s investigations confirm that the college’s systems for reviewing its provision for international students are thorough and effective. School leaders regularly monitor provision of students’ academic progress and pastoral care. There is increasing provision for students to gain proficiency in English. Students are involved at all levels of college life and enjoy access to the city community and its resources for learning. They are able to become involved in a variety of recreational and cultural pursuits. Many receive advice and guidance to enter preferred tertiary courses in cities overseas. 5 Conclusion On the basis of the information obtained during the review, ERO considers that ACG Senior College meets the criteria for registration as a private school set out in the Education Act 1989.
