Vice President, Marketing and Communications About The National Campaign The mission of The National Campaign to Prevent Teen and Unplanned Pregnancy (“the Campaign”) is to improve the lives and future prospects of children and families by ensuring that all children are born into families committed to and ready for the demanding task of raising the next generation. To help achieve this mission, The National Campaign works to reduce both teen pregnancy and unplanned pregnancy among single, young adults. If we are successful in reducing both teen and unplanned pregnancy, child and family wellbeing will improve. There will be less poverty and more opportunities for young men and women to complete their education or achieve other life goals. We are committed to evidence-based and informed strategies; a bi-partisan, nonideological approach; the belief that there is a place for everyone and every sector at the table; the recognition that we must meet our audiences where they are; a relentless pursuit to reduce disparities; and a reduction in overall rates of teen and unplanned pregnancy. Position Available The National Campaign is seeking a Vice President of Marketing and Communications (VP, MarCom) to lead its award winning efforts in this arena. The VP, MarCom will serve on the senior management team, and will be responsible for setting the strategic direction for marketing and communications efforts across all of the Campaign properties. The VP, MarCom, is expected to oversee the implementation of this integrated strategic marketing and communications plan that will bring urgency to the issue of teen and unplanned pregnancy and raise awareness of and positive regard for the organization. The VP, MarCom will manage a talented team of marketing and communications professionals, as well as manage this portfolio budget. S/he will work closely with the organization’s other senior leaders, as well as other members of the organization’s team. S/he will also provide counsel on national marketing and communication issues. The VP, MarCom oversees the development of collateral materials and services (online and offline), media relations, and communications support for The National Campaign’s priority programs. S/he functions as the Campaign’s overall brand manager and directs the efforts of the entire organization on this front. S/he coordinates at the strategic and tactical levels with the other functions of the organization. This position reports to the Chief Program Officer. Duties The essential duties and responsibilities of the VP, MarCom include: • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • Developing and overseeing implementation of an integrated marketing and communications plan and budget that helps the organization achieve strategic priorities. Overseeing the organization’s work with entertainment media. Providing communications leadership for the organization’s work with the press and entertainment media, programs, state and federal policy initiatives, and fundraising efforts. Using media and digital technologies to accomplish our goals. Ensuring that the organization listens carefully to our various target audiences and allows their unique viewpoints to inform our work. Promoting National Campaign products, services, and brands to different audiences. Ensuring that all marketing and communications efforts are culturally inclusive and meet the diverse needs of key audiences. Developing and implementing branding, marketing, and product opportunities to position The National Campaign as a national leader for information about birth control. Developing and disseminating print and digital content and materials. Developing low or no-cost ways to market the organization’s messages and materials. Pursuing opportunities to build partnerships and collaboration with other organizations to help promote National Campaign priorities and messages. Maintaining the organization’s high standards for communicating with various constituencies—we are a no-jargon-allowed organization. Overseeing public opinion research efforts (through polling, focus groups, and other means) to refine targeting, messaging, and messengers. Ensuring implementation of and adherence to branding and messaging guidelines that unify the Campaign’s work and coordinate its communication efforts throughout the organization and across all brands. An advanced degree is desirable. The ideal candidate will have experience: • • • • • • • • Serving in a strategic leadership role in a multi-faceted organization. Creating and implementing effective marketing and communications plans and campaigns. Building earned media opportunities across a variety of media (press, digital, social, print, etc.). Building successful partnerships with ethnic media and those focused on women and girls. Managing specific “sub-brands” designed for different audiences. Managing a high-performing communications team. Creating successful marketing and communications efforts with limited budgets. Developing and tracking clear metrics to judge performance and results. The VP/MarCom candidate must be a highly organized team player who is able to manage multiple projects simultaneously and meet deadlines; pays careful attention to detail; has very strong writing, editing, and verbal communication skills; and is able to comfortably embrace a “big tent” and bipartisan approach to working toward the organization’s goals.
