In recent years, Cross-laminated Timber (CLT) has gained attention in the North American market. CLT is pre-fabricated engineered wood panels consisting of at least three crossed layers of solid-sawn or composite lumber bonded together to form a heavy duty roof, fl oor, or wall. The panels can be used to replace concrete, masonry, and steel in many building types.

More established in building construction in Europe, two CLT plants were operating in the U.S. as of August 2016. CLT has been used in the construction of tall buildings; a 14-story building using CLT is in

2

Bergen, Norway, with planning in process for buildings as high as 80 stories using CLT.

Page 172 - In 2015, lumber shipments from offshore were down to 558 million board feet, 1.2% of the total U.S. supply. Softwood plywood imported from

Brazil in 2005 totaled 303 million square feet (3/8inch basis).

Lumber Agreement covered here expired on October 12, 2015. The two countries agreed to a one-year moratorium on the fi ling of any new trade cases. As of August 2016, the governments of the two countries were holding meetings to discuss the issue. The U.S.

Lumber Coalition, which represents the U.S. industry, has indicated that it will push for the U.S. government to take trade action against Canadian lumber imports; it appears likely that the coalition will fi le trade cases on or shortly after October 12, 2016.
