Whatifmytravellingstudioclasheswithanexam?
For equity reasons, any ABP students who are unable to attend a standard
scheduled examination period must submit a request to the EDSC using the
Alternative Exam request form available on the following website:
http://www.edsc.unimelb.edu.au/alternative‐examination‐arrangements
Each request must be supported by documentary evidence. Once you have
submitted your completed form and documentation to the EDSC, your request
willbeassessed. Ifyourrequestisapproved,theEDSCwillarrangeanalternate
examdate,timeandvenuewhichwillbeheldduringthe supplementaryexam
period.
According to University policy, students are expected to be available for
assessment during the entire Semester which includes the supplementary

SUBJECTOUTLINE
TheVictorianEcoInnovationLab[VEIL]hasbeencommissionedbytheDutch
cityofLeeuwarden[Lwd],theEuropeanCulturalCapitalfor2018,todevelopan
Eco‐Acupuncture future visioning design proposal for the city. We are opening
upthisprocessto16MSDstudentsfromarchitecture,landscapeandplanningto
participate in this design project. Students will take part in an international
studio in Leeuwarden in collaboration with students and academics from the
TechnicalUniversityofDelftandtheAltoDesignFactoryinFinland.
TheLeeuwardenTravellingStudiowillfocuson2‐3urbansites,selectedbythe
city. Students will design interventions to transform the existing built
environment and systems of provision (energy, water, food, transport,
information)forasustainable,lowcarbon,resilientfuture.‐Whatstepsmustbe
taken today to get there? The aim is to identify opportunities that can become
sitesofdesigninterventiontoshiftthepathofinnovationonanewtrajectory:
towardssustainable,resilientconditions.
To understand the strategic objectives of this Travelling Studio [TS] it is
important to emphasise the objectives and strategies laid out in the successful
bidoftheCityofLeeuwardenforEUCulturalcapital2018.Theiremphasisison
buildingfromalonghistoryofinnovationto:"demonstratethatculturecanbeat
theheartoftransformationinthestrengtheningofthesocialfabricandhuman
potentialofEuropeans‐throughaninterdisciplinaryapproach[thatharnesses]
energy and creativity necessary to address our core themes from multiple
perspectives." "In addressing our themes, we involve [local, national and
international] artists, scientists, citizens and institutions alike." Their themes
address ecological and economic sustainability in three domains: Nature and
Culture; City and Countryside; Community and Diversity. During 2018, along
with arts and cultural events that include Energy and Water as major themes,
Lwd2018willsetupaLeeuwardenlivinglab[LABLwd]for"testingnewways
to involve citizens in the process of redesigning their cultural and natural
environment."
ThecollaborativeobjectiveofthisTS(inrelationtoLwd2018)istodemonstrate
the process and value of the VEIL Eco‐Acupuncture approach in achieving the
Lwd2018objectives.(VEILiscurrentlyindiscussionswiththecityandtheLwd
2018teamaboutprovidingon‐goingsupportandtrainingintheyearfollowing
theTSsothatthe2018LABLwdcanincludeEco‐Acupunctureactivity.)
The complexity of thechallengesrequiresamulti‐disciplinary perspective. The
studio brings together students and professionals of architecture, landscape
architecture,buildingtechnology,urbandesignandplanningfromAustraliaand
Europe.ItbuildsonVEIL’swellestablishedacademicandprofessionalnetwork.
Through workshops, students will develop a general understanding of
Leeuwarden's’s current situation and the challenges facing the city. They will
thendevelopadesignvisionforasustainableLeeuwardenin2040,focusing,in
smallergroups,onspecifiedsitesaspotentiallocationsforthisroundofUrban
EcoAcupunctureinterventions.
