ADFRUCHAIRMAN'S MESSAGE
Welcome to the 2016 Australian Defence Force
Rugby Championships. This is our second year
at Ballymore, the traditional home of Queensland
Rugby Union.
Army dominated last year’s tournament, with the men’s
and women’s teams notching up comprehensive wins
against Air Force and Navy. The men’s team is seeking
to go back to back in 2016, while the women’s team is
gunning for four outright titles in a row – a feat never
achieved before. I am sure Navy and Air Force will have
something to say about that.
For those with a sharp eye, you will note the name
change. Australian Services Rugby Union (ASRU)
changed its title to Australian Defence Force Rugby
Union (ADFRU) on 1 March 2016. Incorporating ADF in
the title reflects our tri-service identity and provides an
important link to the highly respected and internationally
recognisable ADF brand. Representative rugby union
in the ADF has a long and proud history, dating back
to the 1st Australian Imperial Forces XV in 1919. We
are committed to building on that history. The men’s
and women’s teams will continue to be known as the
Warriors.
Last year, the women’s team competed at the 2015
Australian Rugby Union (ARU) national XVs tournament.
While the team did not win any matches, the tournament
was invaluable in terms of player experience.
Congratulations to the six players selected in the 2016
ARU Wallaroos extended training squad – Alisha Hewett,
Dannielle Cahill, Sharyn Laws, Mollie Gray, Samantha
Bastick (Army) and Brooke Saunders (Air Force).
As for the men’s team, they travelled to the UK for the
2016 International Defence Rugby Competition (IDRC),
involving 12 teams. The team played two matches
against the ACT Griffins before departure. IDRC round
1 was a replay of the 2011 final against British Army.
Unfortunately, the result was the same – a loss. ADFRU
bounced back in round 2 with an emphatic 15-11 victory
against the French National Military. On hand to witness
the win were ARU Chairman, John Coolican and ARU
CEO, Bill Pulver. ADFRU continued the momentum in
their final pool match, defeating Canadian Armed Forces,
145-7 (an IDRC record). ADFRU bowed out in the quarter
finals, losing to the eventual tournament winner, Republic
02 |
of Fiji Military Forces. ADFRU then played two friendly
test matches, defeating South African National Defence
Force 35-31 and His Majesty’s Armed Forces (Tonga)
27-24. ADFRU finished the eight match tour with four
wins and four losses. Congratulations to Siaka King
(Army) and Josh Friend (Navy) – joint recipients of the
tour best player award.
Looking forward, the women’s team will compete at the
2016 ARU national XVs tournament in June, followed
by a U.S. tour in October, playing matches against U.S.
Army, Air Force, Navy and Combined Services teams.
As for the men, they play an inaugural match against
the Australian Police Rugby Union team in June. In
November, they participate in the ARU national 7s
tournament for the first time.
Congratulations to Isikeli Fukofuka on his appointment
as the new ADFRU Men’s Coach, replacing Tony (Doc)
Doherty, who concluded a four-year stint. Doc has
replaced DJ Cahill as the Coach Development Officer.
Congratulations also to the recipients of last year’s
inaugural life time achievement awards – Geoff Stokes
(Navy), Murray Harley (Army) and Graham King (Air
Force). I extend my gratitude to the following long-serving
departing members – DJ Cahill (former Men’s Coach
and Coach Development Officer) and Christine Clarke
(National Women’s Operations Manager). Finally, I
would like to recognise the ADF Sports Council and our
generous sponsors – Electroboard, The Hugh Element,
Canterbury and Fresh Creative – for their highly valued
support.

Chairman – ADF Rugby Union

MatchOFFICIALS
The ADF Rugby Referees Association provides match
officials for all ADF Rugby Championships matches.
The association has membership of around 50
referees from all three Services. The association’s
mission is to safely, accurately and fairly support all
ADFRU sanctioned matches with qualified match
officials in order to enhance ADF rugby competitions.
Match officials are appointed to the majority of Services
rugby matches within Australia and accompany ADF
rugby teams on overseas tours. The association is
always looking for new members. If you are interested
in giving something back to the game, speak to one
of our members about the opportunities that exist for
referees within ADF rugby.

ADFRUHISTORY
Speculation exists that rugby was first played by the
military as a diversion from other erstwhile and less
healthy pastimes. Services teams emerged during
the World Wars, perhaps none more so than the First
Australian Imperial Forces team which, in 1919, won
12 of its 16 encounters, including wins over the NSW,
Queensland and Australian teams. Representative rugby
union in the ADF did not take on any great significance
until the 1950s. Throughout the 1950s, Combined
Services played a number of touring teams, including
the Fijians in 1950 and the All Blacks in 1951. However,
it was not until 1963 that a formal Australian Services
Union (ASRU) came into being. ASRU became ADF
Rugby Union (ADFRU) on 1 March 2016.
Gradually, progress was made and in 1968, ASRU was
honoured with a match against the touring All Blacks team.
In this particular match there was one Lance Bombardier Robert (Bob) Fulton who took the field for ASRU…only two
days after he played for the Kangaroos in the Rugby League World Cup final. The match against the All Blacks was a
true indication that ASRU had come of age as a representative union.
Throughout the late 1960s and 1970s, National Service had a positive impact on ASRU, ending in 1972 with victories
against strong Sydney and Queensland teams. 1980 saw the strongest ASRU side since 1972, including a victory over
the ACT team. 1980 was also the inaugural year of what is now an annual event – the ADF Rugby Championships.
During the 1980s, ASRU met with mixed fortunes and could not repeat their achievements of 1972 and 1980. The
turning point came in 1992, when what was arguably the best side ASRU had fielded in 20 years, recorded a win
over the Sydney representative team. Following that win, ASRU toured the U.S. and swept all before them. 1993 and
1994 were also memorable years. In 1993, ASRU made the final of the Southern States Carnival and in 1994, ASRU
toured the UK, recording victories against Royal Air Force, Royal Navy and British Army before losing narrowly to UK
Combined Services. In 1995, ASRU won the Healthway International Cup in Perth and in 1999, ASRU was victorious
at the Arafura Games. The 1990s also saw ASRU record two victories against NSW Country in 1994 and 1997.
The past half-decade breathed new life into ASRU’s future. In 2010, the ASRU men’s team defeated the touring
U.S. Combined Services team, followed later that year with their best performance at the Pacific Nations Military
Cup, narrowly missing the final. In 2011, the ASRU men’s team made the final of the inaugural 12-team International
Defence Rugby Competition, losing to the British Army. In 2013, the ASRU men’s team toured Tonga, winning a series
against the Tongan Defence Services. 2014/15 was noteworthy due to matches against old foes – NSW Country (last
match 17 years ago), Northern Territory (last match 15 years ago), NSW Suburban (last match nine years ago) and
New Zealand Defence Force (NZDF). Surprisingly, ASRU and NZDF had only played each other on six occasions over
the past 45 years.
The past five years have also seen the ASRU women’s team perform very well. In 2011, the ASRU women’s team won
their division at the Australian Rugby Union (ARU) Women’s National 15s Championship. In 2012, the team competed
in the inaugural Women’s National 7s Championship, winning the Bowl Final, and also completed a ‘grand slam’ tour
of the UK, defeating Royal Air Force, Royal Navy, British Army, and the UK Combined Services. In 2014, the team
achieved its best result at the ARU National 7s Championship, finishing in 4th place.
Refer to the ADFRU Chairman’s message for a summary of notable accomplishments during 2015.
