Associate Professor in Semiconductor Physics: New Materials for Renewable Energy The position is available at the Department of Physics, under the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences, University of Oslo. The position is associated to the Semiconductor Physics research group (SPG) in the field of New Materials for Renewable Energy. SPG carries responsibility for the Micro- and Nanotechnology Laboratory at UiO, comprising a clean room floor of 450 m2 in size and six advanced analytical laboratories with equipment for chemical, electrical and optical materials/device characterization. SPG is also a member of the Centre for Materials Science and Nanotechnology (SMN) at UiO, a collaborative umbrella action encompassing related activities within the Departments of Physics and Chemistry. SPG has a large portfolio of externally funded projects and is central in nationally coordinated research initiatives like the Norwegian micro- and nanofabrication facility (NorFab) and the Centre for environment-friendly energy research on solar cell technology (FME-SOL) with IFE, NTNU and SINTEF as research partners and the Research Council of Norway as main sponsor. Job description The overall strategy of SPG can be expressed as ‘Application-motivated basic research’ and the research activities are focused on understanding, modification and characterization of novel semiconductor materials/structures for future energy technology and sensor electronics. Particular fields of application are photovoltaics, solid state lighting, hydrogen production, thermoelectricity, and particle detectors. Key words include metal oxides, wide bandgap semiconductors, bulk materials and nanostructured thin layers, doping, point defects and impurities, diffusion/transport and interfaces. The Department is searching for an outstanding young physicist with an excellent research profile in the field of experimental modification and characterization of novel semiconductor materials relevant for renewable energy. Examples of such materials are semiconducting oxides, group-IV materials and group-III nitrides. The main scientific activity of the successful candidate will be the study of atomistic processes on nanometer-scale with emphasis on electrical, optical and chemical phenomena. The applicant must document broad scientific competence within semiconductor physics, in particular the use of spectroscopic electrical characterization techniques and ion beams for nano-structuring and analysis. The successful candidate is expected to (i) collaborate efficiently with existing staff in SPG, (ii) show collaborative ability and experience relevant for crossdisciplinary scientific interactions with related experimental and theoretical activities on both national and international level, (iii) take leadership in collaborative actions and laboratory management, and (iv) attract external funding to the Department. Qualifications To qualify for appointment as Associate Professor, the applicant must have documented scientific work equivalent to a doctorate, and at least three years of post-doctoral experience. Besides taking an active part in the research activities at the Department, the successful applicant is expected to supervise PhD and master students. Teaching duties will include undergraduate as well as graduate courses in physics with special emphasis on Semiconductor Physics and Materials Science/Characterization. The teaching language of undergraduate courses is mainly Norwegian (Scandinavian) whereas for the graduate courses both Norwegian (Scandinavian) and English are used. The person appointed to the position must be able to teach in Norwegian and English within two years. The position will also involve administrative duties according to current regulations by the Department or Faculty. Assessing the applicants, the main emphasis will be placed on the relevant submitted scientific works. Account will also be taken of research management and participation in research projects if adequate evidence of such activity is documented. Weight will also be ascribed to documented pedagogical qualifications, outreach activities, collaboration skills, laboratory management, social skills, the ability to create a good working environment, and expected future potential. Applicants, who at the time of appointment cannot provide documentary evidence of basic teaching competence, must acquire such competence in the course of a period of two years. Evaluation: Interviews and trial lectures may be used as part of the appointment process.
