You may not be sure how you got to be included in this trip. You might have seen a poster or read a leaflet, or someone told you it was a good idea. In fact, come to think of it, you’re not even sure where you’re going to. And will you be going by bus? Riding a Bike? Catching a plane? Walking? Yet somehow, something told you to trust this idea, to give a try, just for the adventure. Or it might just be that you had nowhere else to go, nothing to do, no other way to get from where you were. Anyway, here you are, a little anxious, a little excited, curious, wondering what you have let yourself in for. And that’s pretty much how it was for a group of people who, with all these feelings and many more besides, set out on a voyage of discovery with the Cwmbwrla Dramatherapy Group. But what places they visited! What sights they have seen, what stories told, what people met, what treasures they discovered! Yeh, alright then, you say, what were they, where were they, these precious things, these amazing places? Well, you may not believe it, but they found all this in a room in Cwmbwrla Day Centre. In fact really they brought it with them. The jewels of untold value that they dug up, polished, and brought home, were not only their own creativity and imagination (though they did), and each other (though they did), but all sorts of little bits of themselves that somehow had got put away and forgotten about, or lost, or for some reason someone once told them they couldn’t have (though often no-one could remember why). And were there scary monsters, treacherous precipices, stormy seas, hostile tribes or other threatening features of this expedition? Well yes, there were a bit, actually, but somehow, with the support of fellow travelers, with the knowledge that lifelines are in place, buoyancy aids worn, safety procedures learned and practiced, it’s amazing what trust and courage can be found, what obstacles overcome and distance traveled. The Dramatherapy group has just come to the end of its first cycle of twelve sessions. There may be another adventure. You may want to be there. ײº±®³¿¬·±² Ì»½¸²±´±¹§ º±® Ó»²¬¿´ Ø»¿´¬¸ × ¸¿ª» ¾»»² ©·¬¸ Ó·¬Ø º±® ¿¾±«¬ ¬¸¿¬ ¬¸» ©±®µ ·² Ó·¬Ø · ª»®§ ¬©± §»¿®ò ݱ³°«¬»® ©»®» ¿¬·º§·²¹ ¿²¼ ¹·ª» ³» ¿ »²» ½±³°´»¬»´§ ²»© ¬± ³»ò ɸ»² × ±º ¿½¸·»ª»³»²¬ò Ù»¬¬·²¹ ±«¬ ±º ©¿ ¹·ª»² ¬¸» ½¸±·½» ±º ¿ ÝÔß×Ì ¬¸» ¸±«» ±² ¿ ®»¹«´¿® ¾¿· ¸¿ ½±«®»ô × ¼»½·¼»¼ ·²¬»¿¼ ¬± ¹± ¸»´°»¼ ³§ °»®±²¿´ ´·º»ô ¿²¼ ¬± Ó·¬Ø ¿ × ©¿ ³±®» »²¿¾´»¼ ³» ¬± ³¿µ» ¿ ´±¬ ³±®» ·²¬»®»¬»¼ ·² ¬¸» ©±®µ·²¹ ±º ¬¸» º®·»²¼ ¿²¼ ¹¿·² ³±®» µ·´´ò ½±³°«¬»® ¬¸¿² «·²¹ ¬¸»³ò × ¬¸·²µ ¬¸¿¬ °»±°´» ¸¿ª» ¬± ¹·ª» ·¬ ¿ ½¸¿²½» ¿ ·¬ ¬¿µ» ¬·³» ¬± ´»¿®² ¿´´ ¬¸» ¼·ºº»®»²¬ §¬»³ò × ¼± ß Ð»® ±²¿´ Ê·»© ¾§ Ò·½µ ݱµ»® ³· ¹±·²¹ ±² ®¿³¾´» ¿²¼ ±¬¸»® ¿½¬·ª·¬·» ¿¬ Ý©³¾©®´¿ ¾«¬ º·²¼ ¿¬ ¬¸» ³±³»²¬ ±©·²¹ ¬± ¬¸» ¹®»¿¬ ·²½®»¿» ·² ݱ³°«¬»® «»ò Ô·µ» ÌÊô ³±¬ ¸±«»¸±´¼ ¸¿ª» ¬¸»³ò ̸»§ ©·´´ ¿´©¿§ ²»»¼ ®»°¿·® ¿²¼ ®»°´¿½»³»²¬ò Page 5 ̸» Þ·¹ з½¬«®» Ú±®¹»¬ ¬¸» Þ®·¬ ß©¿®¼ ¿²¼ ¬¸» ³±ª»¼ ·²¬± Í©¿²»¿ Ó«»«³ ¬± º¿½·´·¬¿¬» ÞßÚÌßô ¬¸» Þ·¹ з½¬«®» ¸¿ ¹¿·²»¼ ¿ ²»© ¬¸· ±² É»¼²»¼¿§ ô ©¸·´¬ η½¸¿®¼ô ¿²¼ ª»®§ »¨½·¬·²¹ °®±¶»½¬ÿò Ö¿³»ô α·¬¿ ¿²¼ ß²¼®»© ©±®µ ±² ¬¸» Ú±´´±©·²¹ ±² º®±³ ¬¸» «½½» ±º ¬¸» ÜÊÜ Ø·¬±® § ±º ¬¸» Ó«³¾´» °·½¬«®» ©·¬¸ ¬¸» ½±³°«¬»® ·² ÝÎÛßÌÛò ̸» Ó«³¾´» ο·´©¿§Œ · ¿ º·²» ο·´©¿§Œ ô ©¸·½¸ · ¬·´´ ¿ª¿·´¿¾´» ¬± »¨¿³°´» ±º ¬¸·ò °«®½¸¿» ±²´§ º®±³ Í©¿²»¿ Ó«»«³ô ³±ª»³»²¬ ±º ¬¸» °¸±¬±¹®¿°¸ ¸¿ª» ¬± »ª»®¿´ ¾» °»®º»½¬´§ §²½¸®±²·»¼ô ©¸·½¸ ¬¿µ» ¾®¿²¼ ²» © ÜÊÜ °®±¼«½»¼ô ¼»°·½¬·²¹ ¿®» Í©¿²»¿ ¾»·²¹ ¾»º±®»ô ¼«®·²¹ô ¿²¼ ¿º¬»® ɱ®´¼ É¿® ××ò ̸» ²¿®®¿¬·ª» ¿²¼ ³¿²§ ¸±«® ±º »¨¿½¬·²¹ ©±®µò Ú±® × ¿³ «®» ¬¸¿¬ ¬¸» ²»© ÜÊÜ ©·´´ ±´¼»® °»±°´» ¬¸· ©·´´ ¾®·²¹ ¾¿½µ ³¿²§ °®±ª±µ» ³«½¸ ·²¬»®»¬ ¿²¼ ¼»¾¿¬»ò ̸» ³»³±®·» å ¿²¼ º±® ¬¸±» §±«²¹»® ·¬ °¸±¬±¹®¿°¸ ¸¿ª» ¿´®»¿¼§ ¬·®®»¼ «° ³«½¸ ©·´´ °®±ª±µ» ·²¬»®»¬ ¿²¼ ¿³¿¦»³»²¬ ¿ ¼·½«·±² ¾»¬©»»² ¬¸» °»±°´» ©¸± ¿®» ¬± ©¸¿¬ ¸¿°°»²»¼ ¿²¼ ¸±© Í©¿²»¿ «»¼ ©±®µ·²¹ ±² ¬¸»³ò ¬± ´±±µ ¾»º±®» ¿²¼ ¿º¬»® ¬¸» Þ´·¬¦ò ̸» º·®¬ ¬»° · ¬± ©±®µ ±² ¸«²¼®»¼ ±º ±´¼ °¸±¬±¹®¿°¸ º®±³ ¬¸» Ó«»«³ô Ûª»²·²¹ б¬ ¿®½¸·ª» ¿²¼ ±¬¸»® ±«®½» ô ·² ±®¼»® ¬± ®»°¿·® ¿²§ ¼¿³¿¹» ¿²¼ ¬± ³¿µ» ¬¸»³ ¿ ½´»¿® ¿ °±·¾´»ò ß²¼®»© ¸¿ Ù±±¼ ®»³·²·½·²¹ÿ Page 6 HAFAL SWANSEA Supporting patients and families in Swansea ̸» Ø¿º¿´ Ю±¶»½¬ ¸¿ ²±© »¬¬´»¼ °®»³·»ô ©·¬¸ ²±¬ ±²´§ ¼±«¾´» ¬¸» ¿³±«²¬ ±º ¿½¬·ª·¬§ ®±±³ ¾«¬ ¿´± ¿ ´¿®¹»ô ½±ª»®»¼ °¿¬·± ¿¬ ¬¸» ®»¿®ò ¬±©¿®¼ °»±°´» ©·¬¸ »ª»®» ³»²¬¿´ ¸»¿´¬¸ °®±¾´»³ ¿²¼ ½¿®»® ³¿µ» º±® ¿ ®»´¿¨»¼ô ·²º±®³¿´ ¿¬³±°¸»®»ò ß ²»© ×Ì ®±±³ ¸¿ ¾»»² °®±ª·¼»¼ ©·¬¸ º·ª» ½±³°«¬»® µ·¬¬»¼ ±«¬ ©·¬¸ ײ¬»®²»¬ »®ª·½»ò ̸»®» ¿®» °®±°±¿´ ¬± ®«² ½±³°«¬»® ½´¿» ¿²¼ ß¼®·¿²ô ¬¸» ½±³°«¬»® ©¸·¦ º®±³ Ý©³¾©®´¿ ô ¸¿ ¬¿®¬»¼ ¹·ª·²¹ ·²¬®«½¬·±² ̸»®» ¿®» °´¿² ¬± »¬ «° ¿² ·²º±®³¿¬·±² »®ª·½» ·² ¬¸» ®±±³ ¼±©²¬¿·® ¬¸¿¬ · ½«®®»²¬´§ ¾»·²¹ ®»º«®¾·¸»¼ò ׬ ©±«´¼ ¾» °±·¾´» ¬± ´·²µ ¬± ±¬¸»® ¹®±«° «½¸ ¿ ײº±´¿¾ ¿²¼ º±®³ °¿®¬ ±º ¿ ²»¬©±®µò ̸» ݧ½´·²¹ Ù®±«° ¸¿ ²±© ®»¬¿®¬»¼ô ¿´± ¬¸» É¿´µ·²¹ Ù®±«° ¹±» ±«¬ ®»¹«´¿®´§ò Í©·³³·²¹ ©·´´ ¾» ½±²·¼»®»¼ ²±© Ôî ¸¿ ®»ó±°»²»¼ò Ú®±³ Ó¿®µ Ó»¿¹» º®±³ ¿ ¹·®´º®·»²¼ ͱ³»±²» ±³»©¸»®» · ¬¸·²µ·²¹ ±º §±«å ͱ³»±²» ±³»©¸»®» ¼®»¿³ ±º §±«å ͱ³»±²» ±³»©¸»®» ¼®»¿³ ±º §±«® ³·´» ß²¼ô ©¸·´» ¬¸·²µ·²¹ ±º §±«ô ¿§ ´·º» · ©±®¬¸©¸·´» ͱ³»±²» ±³»©¸»®» · ¬¸·²µ·²¹ ±º §±«å ¬®«»å ͱ³»±²» ±³»©¸»®» · ¬¸·²µ·²¹ ±º §±« Orchard Centre Page 7 C o g n i ti v e Beh a v i o u ra l T her a py ׳°®±ª·²¹ Understand how these affect your current behaviour, feelings and thoughts and ݱ¹²·¬·ª» Þ»¸¿ª·±«®¿´ ̸»®¿°§ · »ºº»½¬·ª» ·² ·³°®±ª·²¹ §³°¬±³ ±º ¿¬¬·¬«¼»ô ¬¸±«¹¸¬ ¿²¼ º»»´·²¹ò λ»¿®½¸ ¸¿ ¸±©² ¬¸¿¬ ÝÞÌ ½¿² ¾» ¶«¬ ¿ »ºº»½¬·ª» ¿ ³»¼·½¿¬·±² º±® ³¿²§ ½±²¼·¬·±²ô «½¸ ¿ ¿²¨·»¬§ ¿²¼ ¼»°®»·±²ô ¿²¼ ³¿§ °®±ª·¼» ´±²¹ó¬»®³ °®±¬»½¬·±² ¿¹¿·²¬ ®»´¿°»ò ̸» §³°¬±³ ¿®» ´» ´·µ»´§ ¬± ®»½«® ·º ±²» ¸¿ ¾»»² ¸»´°»¼ ¬± «²¼»®¬¿²¼ ¬¸» ½±²¼·¬·±² ¿²¼ ´»¿®²¬ ½±°·²¹ ¬»½¸²·¯«»ò ݱ¹²·¬·ª» Þ»¸¿ª·±«®¿´ ̸»®¿°§ · ¿ ¬®»¿¬³»²¬ ¬¸¿¬ ½¸¿´´»²¹» ¬¸» ©¿§ ©» ¬¸·²µ ø½±¹²·¬·ª»÷ ¿²¼ ¿½¬ ø¾»¸¿ª·±«®÷ò Þ§ ¼±·²¹ ¬¸· ·¬ ¿·³ ¬± ½¸¿²¹» ¬¸» º»»´·²¹ ¬¸¿¬ ½®»¿¬» »³±¬·±²¿´ ¿²¼ °¸§·½¿´ °®±¾´»³. To keep service users and carers up to date, a day’s Workshop was held in Sketty Park Sports and Social Club, Swansea, on January 23rd ,2008. Les Rudd, who is the project leader for the process, gave an up-to-date presentation on where we are. He spoke of the options being discussed and future changes that may occur. Options include:The CMHTs (Community Health Teams) will be changed from four teams to three. This will not mean that we will lose a team but that two teams will be combined. These two will be based together and share administrative resources. This definitely does not mean that you would lose your CPN or Social Worker, just that they will be based in a different building. Rehabilitation. The options are for looking at setting up fast and slow stream rehabilitation facilities with greater support in the community. Elderly Services. There is the possibility of these services moving to Morriston Hospital in order provide closer links with general medicine. Acute wards. Option 1 is to rebuild on the Cefn Coed site. Option 2 is to rebuild on the Morriston Hospital campus. Drug and Alcohol Services.: Option 1 is that this should be provided wherever the Acute Services are placed. . Option 2 to provide this service in the community. The rest of the time was spent in groups: discussions took place around the various options. Comments were written on the flip charts and feedback followed. It was an open day and people freely expressed their opinions. The Flip charts will be written up and the outcome sent to everyone who attended the day( 47 in all). The next step is to cost the various options: only then can we really know how to move forward. Please remember that the reshaping of Mental Health Services is part of the bigger reshaping of Health Services in Swansea. Also that from April 2008 we will be part of one of the largest Trusts in Wales when we merge with Bromorgannwg Trust, (which includes Neath, Port Talbot and Bridgend). Users’ and carers’ comments which were collected at this meeting will to be presented at the Local Health Board Reshaping Mental Health Service Project Board on April 23rd by Les Rudd. Lily Bidmead SNUG and Patients Council Women’s Centre Gender Equality Duty 2008 Page 9 Ù»²¼»® Û¯«¿´·¬§ Ü«¬§ îððè The Gender Equality Duty becomes Law in the UK on 01/04/08. It is the biggest change in sex equality legislation in 30 years. The duty puts the onus on organisations to promote equality, rather than individuals to highlight discrimination and poor practice. It should mean that men and women will be able to access services which meet their needs more closely. It does not mean services have to be delivered equally, but rather that services are delivered to women and men in ways that most appropriately meet their needs, and promote equality of opportunity. “In order to achieve actual equality of opportunity, it is necessary to recognise that in certain circumstances women and men, because of their sex or gender roles, are not in the same position. In some circumstances it may be therefore appropriate for public authorities to treat women and men differently, if that action is aimed at overcoming previous disadvantage.” (Point 2.13, page 13 Gender Equality Duty Code of Practice England and Wales. Equal Opportunities Commission) The Duty applies to all public authorities (e.g. local authorities, social services etc.) who provide services to the public. It also applies to the Voluntary Sector when they are contracted to provide services on behalf of the state. Public service providers will have to ascertain who uses their services and find out: What are the different issues and priorities for men and woman who use their services? Do men and women have different requirements and needs when accessing their services? Will men or women be put off from accessing a service because of issues such as lack of childcare or an unsafe or unwelcoming environment? Are some services more effectively delivered if they are women-only or men-only? In some cases i t will still be legal to provide single sex services: “The circumstances in which single sex provision is lawful vary depending on whether the activity in question is classed as education, goods, facilities and services, or as a public function.” (Point 258, page 22 Gender Equality Duty Code of Practice England and Wales ) The Duty will also mean that public authorities will also have to review their employment practices and examine issues such as: Pay gaps between men and women. Flexible working Recruitment Return rate from maternity leave The effects of these policies on transgendered individuals. The legislation should be welcome as it tackles direct and indirect discrimination. It also acknowledges that different groups of people are not starting from a level playing field and services have to be adapted to cater for their needs. This will mean that the both the mental health services will be one in due course. This will make it one of the biggest mental health organisations in Wales. The details of how this will work on a day-to-day basis is not clear yet, but Mr Paul Williams, the Chief Executive of the new trust has given a commitment to ensure that the strong links we have with user and carer groups will continue to be of high importance in the running and planning of mental health services in Swansea. Indeed Mr Williams has already met with some user group representatives. In addition, some of you will be aware that the Minister has asked for a review of the m anagement of all mental health services in Wales, and is deciding whether to set up a new All Wales Mental Health Trust for the principali ty. These are only one section of a very busy workshop that produces high quality, professional work. Display cabinets, kitchen and other cupboards, wardrobes and even a pine based double bed are in the process of being made. As Len ,Tony and Wendy say “You order it, we’ll get it made!”. At the other end of the scale are rocking horses and dolls’ houses which, as you can see, are very attractive and would make beautiful presents for a young girls and future heirlooms . As well as woodwork, there is picture framing, key-cutting, computer activities and jewellerymaking. The department is available, for in-patients , on referral, and occasionally for a discharged patient to enable him (or her) to finish their work. The weekly jewellery-making sessions are extremely popular. There are mostly ladies in the group but men are always welcome to join. It is a very interesting and exciting department with enthusiastic staff and a wide range of interesting activities useful as well as therapeutic. I only wish that I had been informed about all this when I was a patient in Cefn Coed for over nine months I would have greatly benefited from attending this department. This is organised to help people who self harm and to explore and understand reasons behind their behaviour. We are offering a drop-in specifically for people who self harm. This will be held every Wednesday between 10am and 12 noon. Another initiative will provide access to a solicitor from Morgans Solicitors in Swansea Mind Drop In Centre on one Tuesday afternoon per month.
