Cost-effective aisle containment cuts data centre running costs Cool-Therm’s cost-effective aisle containment system for data centres can significantly cut energy use and deliver big savings in running costs for operators. The system, designed by temperature control specialist Cool-Therm, separates cold and warm air within the server room without having to make structural changes to the building. It can be quickly and easily installed in existing data centres without causing disruption to installed equipment and ensuring continuity of service. Savings begin immediately and continue to accrue over the working life of the facility. Payback can be achieved rapidly, within six months on some installations, depending on the nature of the project and characteristics of the site. Cold aisle containment system with cooling via raised floor in server room How it works Most data centre racks are designed to draw in air through the front and exhaust it from the rear. This allows the creation of separate hot and cold aisles, with rows of racks facing each other and drawing cool air from the shared aisle, maintained with a thermal envelope around the aisle. Warm air from rows fronting the cold aisle is exhausted to the rear into hot aisles, raising the temperature of air returning to the Computer Room Air Conditioning (CRAC) Units and boosting efficiency. This allows operators to implement discrete cold and hot aisle containment systems, to maximise the efficiency of cooling. The Cool-Therm system creates a thermal envelope around aisles using clear insulated ceiling panels set into a light but rigid steel framework, with the ends of aisles sealed with vertical PVC hanging blinds, for easy access for service staff. Gaps in racks are installed with blanking plates to prevent mixing of cold and hot air through the voids, ensuring cold air is concentrated through operating servers. Hot aisle containment puts an envelope around the hot discharge The benefits Separation of hot and cold air streams enables the high volume air conditioning systems to work much more effectively, reducing power consumption and energy costs. Cooling energy costs are reduced by between 10 and 30 per cent. continued over page “Payback can be achieved rapidly, within six months on some applications, depending on the nature of the site.” ROB STRONG, COOL-THERM Server aisle containment The Cool-Therm system creates a thermal envelope around aisles using clear insulated ceiling panels set into a light but rigid steel framework. A well designed containment system allows higher temperature set points by directing cool air more accurately to the server inlets. It also helps eliminate hot spots and extends the operational life of IT equipment. An important additional benefit is that the system enables greater intensity of use of existing rack space, enabling the postponement of new rack space provision - and potentially overcoming or delaying the need for data centre new facilities. To date, the Cool-Therm Data Centre Aisle Containment system has been installed in several data centers across the UK, operated by some of the industry’s leading companies. Having proven the effectiveness of the system, they are now rolling it out to other sites. Rob Strong (right), who designed the system, says: “The Cool-Therm Data Centre Aisle Containment system is highly cost-effective, reducing pay-back times to months instead of years. “It is also flexible and easy to install, enabling a tailored system to be designed and installed in a very short space of time – so that savings can begin immediately.” Cold aisles cut running costs and improve the performance of CRAC units For more details call Rob Strong on Tel: 02920 887077, Fax: 02920 887066, Mobile: 07973132724, Email rob.strong@cooltherm.co.uk “AN IMPORTANT ADDITIONAL BENEFIT IS THAT CONTAINMENT ALLOWS GREATER INTENSITY OF USE OF EXISTING RACK SPACE.” ROB STRONG, COOL-THERM aDDED BENEFITS Power savings extend to room hardware such as servers, switches, routers and so on, extending equipment life spans.
