The Voice of LuLu
From the Desk of the Recorder
Well here it is the end of July. Another Circus is
in the books, we are back from Imperial & getting
ready for the Rodeo. Imperial was interesting this
year. This was the fi rst time I have ever stayed at the
Imperial hotel.
It was a large, beautiful facility & it had a walkway
to the convention center. The convention center was
the size of three or four football fields & naturally we
were at the far end for our meetings. All the competitions were held in the center on the fi rst floor.
The horses, cycles, mini-cars, clowns all had
their separate rooms for their competitions. I hate
to give Finky a bigger head then he already has but
he & Spanky took home (3) competition awards.
Congrats guys.
Now for the sessions. For the most part the items
being voted on in the Call were non-descript. Item
#1 in the call was a raise in the per capita tax from
$15.00 to $30.00. Imperial was pretty smart in the
way they did this. They told the voting delegates that
if this item did not pass they would have to cut their
funding for Imperial Sessions.
That means their transportation, rooming, their
wife’s attendance would be cut or eliminated. That
item passed, so in 2016 LuLu dues will go from $105.00
to $125.00. Temple Dispensations & Charters fees
were raised.
Moslah & Saladin Shriners now elect members
based on a written ballot if the candidate receives
51% of the vote. The Imperial Potentate can allow
a Temple to change location of its annual meeting. There were a few Temples that requested a
change of address because they sold their building
& moved.
A Noble who has demitted from a Temple now only
has to live in the jurisdiction of the Temple he resides
in. (Not the old six months living in that Oasis) Aad
& Kem Shriners jurisdiction issue in Minnesota was
defeated. The other jurisdiction issues were passed.
Hikmat Shriners in Brazil is our newest
Temple. The Imperial “Oversite Committee” had a long
discussion & the article was amended to have the
chairman serve (1) yr. & no Imperial officers or
2
Trustees may serve
on that committee.
That amended article
passed.
If anyone wants to
see the full version
of the Call, it is in my
office. If you are bored
& want to read some
very interesting items
stop by & be my guest.

Board of Trustees Chairman Doug Maxwell lost
his re-election bid to Imperial Sir Dale Staussfor Board Chairman. Lastly, on a sadder note, the
Imperial Captain of the Guard Joseph Savaglio
of Kismet Shriners, Long Island, NY resigned his
position. I knew Joe when he served on the Philadelphia Hospital Board. After (2) years running & then
(2) years on the Imperial line, it is a shame to see
that happen.
Sunday, 7/26, was “Christmas in July” at the
Hospital. If this was not the largest contingent of
bikes it had to be the closest. I know they had over
500 registered riders.
This year also had the largest group of children
present. It was nice to see LuLu by far had the most
Nobles & ladies in attendance. The Divan was well
represented with Joe Rocco, Doug Fink, Jerry Jay,
Hugh McGinniss, myself & before I forget all those
Divan ladies were also in attendance & helping out.
There were also a lot of clowns & even better
were their wives in costume. Donna O’Hara Lewis,
Charmaine Lutz & Lyn Mauer. Jackie Blum came up

The Family Picnic was held two days after we returned from Houston.
Then on July 16th the Divan, our Ladies, and LuLu’s Hospital Board
Representatives attended the Expanded Board Day at our Shiner’s Hospital for Children, Philadelphia. We were addressed by the new Administrator, Chief of Staff, and other department managers who updated us
on advancements at the Hospital.
As soon as I fi nish writing this article, Lady Bobbie and I are packing
our bags and are joining 41 others for the LuLu Potentate’s trip to Rapid
City, South Dakota – 9 days of Western adventures. Hee Haw – here
we come!
My Lady Bobbie and I have been pleased to attend the Balls of two
of our counterparts at Irem Shrine in Wilkes Barre, PA and Nur
Shrine in Wilmington, Delaware. We are looking forward in the fall
to join the Potentate of Crescent Shrine in N.J. at his Ball. It really is a
busy year.
Shortly after our return from out West Allah Temple No. 28 Daughters of the Nile will be hosting the Supreme Queen’s visit. The Divan
members will be joining them for a reception dinner following their
ceremony.

Wow — who said that the Shrine “goes dark” in the summer?? But,
starting up again in September, the clubs and units will be back on
their monthly schedules. Of course, the lead off to this is MASA in
Virginia Beach, VA.
Our 16th annual charity Golf Outing will be held at Pinecrest Country Club on September 21st. Have fun playing golf, enjoying dinner
and raising funds for our great cause, supporting our Hospital system!
A stated Business Meeting will be held on September 30th. Mark
your calendar!
I would like to thank all LuLu Nobles and their Ladies whose teamwork helps toward our goal of providing care for the children. Your
efforts exemplify “Love to the Rescue”.

From the Desk of the Recorder continued
to me to say hello & at fi rst I had no idea who she
was since she had her clownette costume on. For us
who are not clowns (yeah I know) don’t act surprised
when people like me have no idea who you are.
There were also a few Past Potentates present;
Bill Adamson & Kate, Gary Davis & Cheryl, Roy
Knauth & Manny Iglesias. Lastly we had two brand
new Nobles who attended, Bruce Gaskey & Steve
Cohen. These are the kind of Nobles we always look
for. They have the energy & enthusiasm that the
Shrine needs.
They are interested in reviving the Shepherds, so
if you guys that were in the Shepherds can get a hold
of them & maybe the other Nobles who just joined we
can get the Shepherds back in business.
At the last Hospital Board meeting we had a
doctor speak to us about cleft lip palate repair along
with facial reconstruction. I always thought that I
knew what cleft lip repair entailed. Let me tell you he
showed cases that I never would have dreamed would
be able to have the result he showed. He explained all
the other medical services that would be needed &
the list was quite extensive. They do this type of work
in the Chicago Hospital but if we decide to bring this
into our hospital I am quite sure we would become
the leader in the country for this type of surgery. Don’t
forget that Board meetings are the third Thursday of
the month except for December. You can attend any
committee meetings that day & also attend the Board
meeting at 10:30. Some just come for the breakfast
& lunch.
The building search committee chairman Barry
VanRensler met with representatives of ECRI to
iron out some of the issues that Barry had with the
preliminary paper work. More info as we get it.
We will be hosting a “Walk” for the hospital on
October 3rd. hopefully we will get some TV coverage
for this event. It would be great to have the facility
advertised so maybe we can acquire more rentals.
We will walk twice around the building & parking lot
which equals a mile. If you can’t walk don’t worry,
come out & show your support. The hospital will have
vendors & a lot of surprises. Registration is $25.00 &
4
you will receive a “Tee Shirt”. Come & meet some of
the children from the hospital. It will be a fun day.
Lastly, if you are not part of the Wednesday work
crew or the office staff please do not touch the equipment in the building or in the arena area that does not
concern you. We have had issues with people turning
equipment on & off. The last & most costly situation
was someone shut off the power to the refrigerator in
the Stewards booth.
The people from the Brazilian Rodeo moved our
fries to that refrigerator. Since someone turned the
power off, all the fries were ruined & let me tell you
the smell would knock you over. After we get the fries
out, we have to pay Waste Management to remove the
refrigerator & then we have to buy the Stewards a
new refrigerator.
Someone also called the Fire Marshall to check the
seating the Brazilians installed in the arena. After
speaking to Doug & Don, we decided to remove that
seating area. Also I do not as of yet, what will happen
with the fence installed around the haunted house. I
was informed it is too high & too close to the street.
Lastly the new large propane tanks will probably
need concrete pads & bollards placed around them.
More info on these items later.
Hopefully everyone is enjoying their summer.
Stay cool.
Remember if I can be of any assistance, do not
hesitate to call. I’m in the directory.

For the Ladies of LuLu Shrine
Have you ever wondered why sometimes you read
articles in the FEZ that are somewhat after the fact?
That’s because articles are due to the office one month
prior to the next FEZ. And that is also why there are
flyers for upcoming events several months in advance
in the FEZ. So, at this writing, it is still July. I’d like to
re-cap some past events.
The 141st Imperial Session was held in early July
in Houston, Texas. While the men were in sessions in
the Convention Center, we Ladies took a bus trip to
Galveston to tour the Shriners Hospital for Children,
Galveston where they treat children with burns. We
got to see a “bit” of Texas on the way because it was a
one hour ride from Houston. The tour of the hospital
was fascinating, and we saw fi rsthand the latest techniques in burn treatment and rehabilitation. Of course
we Ladies also enjoyed shopping in the Marketplace in
the Convention Center and some of us had our picture
taken with a “mega”Fezzy. Although our Nobles were
busy most of the time, we Ladies were invited to the
Pageant and Installation, the Ladies Luncheon (and
entertained by two terrific comediennes), the presentation of the Imperial’s Lady’s program for this year,
and the Public Relations program that introduced the
Shrine Children Ambassadors for this coming year.
On our fi nal evening we all enjoyed a performance by
the Texas Tenors. You might remember them as the
winners of America’s Got Talent from six years ago.
Wasn’t the Family Picnic fun?? More than 130 adults
and children attended, and there was something for
everyone. The Stewards provided us with oodles of
food---hotdogs and hamburgers cooked outside on the
grill plus lots of extras — salads, baked beans, corn on
the cob and water ice. The Philadelphia Zoo held a 45
minute show for the children who learned about the
animals and were able to touch many. Thanks to the
Mounted Guard there were four horses to provide rides
for children and adults alike. Ladies Auxiliaries provided baked goods and beautiful raffle baskets. Each
child received a gift. But some thought the highlight of
the day was their opportunity to sink Oriental Guide
Gerry Jay and Potentate Matt Hallowell into the dunk
tank. It was very entertaining! Keep in mind that this
annual event is open, not only to Shriners’ families,
but also to your friends and neighbors. The more
the merrier!
Want to “make a difference” for LuLu Shrine and also
for yourself? The Rodeo is coming in September with
fun for all ages. Volunteers are always welcomed at the
many midway booths. If you have a free day to help
6
out, just show up at the
trailer by the arena and
someone will give you an
assignment.
And volunteering is also
encouraged at the Haunted
House which begins in
October. Have you ever been dressed as a spook and
scared someone? Take it from me, it is a lot of fun! The
fi rst time I volunteered I was a “dead person” in the
cemetery and found it difficult not to smile and break
out of my role when unsuspecting visitors screamed at
me! There are lots of costumes, masks, wigs, hats, and
makeup. Although the planners appreciate knowing in
advance who will be “acting”, there is always room for
those who show up.
Hopefully, by now, your Noble has been sharing the
FEZ and you Ladies have become regular readers.
However, I am concerned when I hear Ladies reply “I
didn’t know about it”. So let’s see if we can improve
communication by implementing an email listing for
you Ladies. LuLu Shrine uses Constant Contact to communicate with the Nobles. The office has agreed to take
the Ladies’ personal email addresses so that you can
receive notices and flyers. If you would like to be on
that list contact Secretary Chrissy Schultz at chrissy@
lulushriners.org or call the office 610-828-9050.
I have been contacted by two Shriner Ladies and we
will plan a weekend tour of the Shriners Hospital for
Children, Philadelphia in September or October. I still
have room for one or two more in my car. Just contact
me at 2215-918-0418 or bobbiehallowell@yahoo.com. if
you would like to join us for a tour!
The First Lady’s starfish pin represents my theme
of “making a difference”. Recently I received a lovely
email from Elaine Bleiber who resides at Masonic Village in Elizabethtown. She had read a recent article of
mine in the FEZ and related this story to me. With her
permission I wanted to share it with you. Her daughter
was the fi rst resident of the Caring Cottage for mentally challenged children at Elizabethtown. Elaine is
now known as The Angel Lady because she began creating and selling angel pins, with the proceeds being
“donated to the cottage so that the ‘kids’ could do things
for which the budget does not provide”. Over the past
eleven years $130,000 has been donated to this cause,
certainly “making a difference” in the lives of others.

Picnic and Bazaar was held on Saturday July 11,
2015. God was good to us as the day was beautiful
inside, and outside of the building. Many thanks to all
those who attended and worked.
Gloria Rogers was the sign in lady, the Stewards

are there very early in the morning and afterward
to clean up and cooked outside in the heat. YOU ARE
WONDERFUL.
The food was excellent and plenty of it. I would
also like to thank the Klownz for being there all day
making balloons and the children smile. We also had
music while we ate thanks to Chrissy from the office.
Participating in the bazaar tables were Northeast
Shrine Club with their homemade baked goods, humm-m! Then the Daughters of the Nile, Allah Temple,
(They help support Shriners Hospitals), they gave
away free soft pretzels. Also they were promoting the
CASINO NIGHT AT THE SHRINE. This will be fun.
It will be held on Saturday, October 17, 205 from
7pm - 11PM reservations payable to Allah Temple.
Call Lisa Lee @ 215-887-8042 for prices. Everyone is
welcome.
The next group, Order of the Eastern Star had six
baskets they chanced off. There was a little girl there
that fell in love with the doll in the girl’s basket, and
she won. Happy, Happy, Happy!
The next table was Bucks County Shrine Club. They
chanced off three prizes, a certificate value at $100.00
toward jewelry, movies, and a large basket. The last
table had a lot of items on it. This was the Legion of
Honor Ladies. The wreath was won by Linda Endrick,
she was thrilled to win it.
The Philadelphia Zoo came with animals and
entertained the children and adults alike. Horse rides
were provided for the young and old by The Mounted
Guard. We wish to give a BIG THANK YOU to our
Potentate and First Lady.
They both worked to make this a success. Last but
not least our Potentate and Oriental Guide got very
wet in the DUNK TANK. So brave, but the potentate
forgot his towel. Thanks again Matt for not canceling
this event. You missed a good afternoon if you did
not come.

we are always looking for a few riders and assistants at the Mounted Guard.
Houston in the summer is HOT and this years
Imperial was no exception. Our Mounted Guard
did participate in the Parade but not as we
expected to. Up to one hour before the parade
started we still had glimmer of hope of have
horses but as that glimmer faded Ill Sir’s, Manny,
Billy and I carried LuLu’s Temple Banner through
the parade. It would appear that all the practice
and the hauling of our tack was for note. Can you
believe they could not fi nd horses for us to rent in
Texas! This is only the second time I can remember that the Mounted Guard marched in a parade;
the other time was in 2000 when I was Potentate
in Virginia Beach. With our return from Imperial
the Mounted was there for the LuLu Family picnic
giving rides to all who wanted to say they were on
a horse. On a side note I was elected to President
of International Shrine Horse Patrol and our Drill
Master Ill Sir Bill is planning on taking our own
horses to Tampa Florida next year.

Questions that Genesis answers
Father Otto Lolk
Chaplain of LuLu
Past Master,
Frankford Lodge 292
215-485-5068
Last time I shared with you
about truth, especially about
biblical truth. I said that truth
is a many splendored thing.
Since we have five sense gates
we all could tell the truth with
five different versions of the
same truth. I gave you a couple
of examples of how this works.
I am now particularly interested in the truth that Genesis
speaks of within the fi rst eleven
chapters.
The bible came into existence
long before the birth of science.
The truth that the bible contains has all five of these
kinds of truths. If one determines that the bible is
going to be fact and fact alone, then one will be faced
with the problem that have made many good thinking people to turn away from the bible. For example,
when Jesus was asked about a question concerning
truth of God, He simply answered by saying: Let me
tell you a story. If one takes the bible literally, one
will miss the truth will all its incredible insights and
revelations and wind up with just facticities. If one
looks at this, that it has to be fact, then you’ll fi nd the
scriptures to be nothing more than legend and tales
that do not bring out any truth whatsoever.
In the fi rst eleven chapters of Genesis we do not have
eye witnesses; there are no TV cameras or reporters hiding behind a tree writing down exactly how
everything happened. What we do have are inspired
stories drawn from the literatures of the near east and
drawn from a lot of other cultures. These are inspired
stories that enable us to answer, from the divine
realty, the basic questions that any thinking human
being is going to ask: what is it to be alive and to be
conscious in our kind of world? Remember these are
the foundational questions and revelatory answers of
what is important of a God who simply wants to bless.
Salvation history proceeds out of a background of a
certain vision of reality. The fi rst eleven chapters tell
us stories and answers to ultimate questions that any
human being is prone to ask, especially if one is a
thinking person. For example the question that has
always perplexed human beings is “why something
and not nothing?” That is “why does anything stand
out of nothingness and exist?” It is asking “why are we
alive and not absolutely nothing?” “Where did all this
14
come from?” “Where did I come from?” “What is the
real reason in back of my aliveness?” or “Who am I?”
“What does it mean to be a human being?” “Who are
you?” “Who are we?” These questions are very perennial, significant and profound. Another question that
came to early people and still comes to us: “Why are
human beings so much alike and at the same time so
different?” such as the distinction between males and
females. In other words, what does it mean to be male
and female and why is this so characteristic of the
human race? Other questions from a negative stance
are “Why is there so much suffering when we were
created by a good God?” “Why so much anguish, why
is it so hard? “Why is it so painful for women to give
birth to a baby, or why do we have such a hard time
earning a living?” “Why are there so many confl icts
between humans, and why are there so many calamities such as hurricanes, tornadoes and floods?” “Why
are there so many languages and different cultures
and even religions?”
These are the ultimate questions that ancient as
well as modern people have wondered about. These
questions serve as a kind of background out of which
God comes to a man by the name of Abraham and
said: “I want to bless you and all your descendants
after you and I wish to bless the whole human race
through Abraham because I will bless those who
bless you, Abraham, and I will curse those who curse
you Abraham (so watch out all you Hitler’s and learn
from his cursing of the Jews).
Such inspired stories that we fi nd in the eleven
chapters of Genesis will strive to answer these aforementioned questions and serve as a background for
what God began to do in Abraham and continues to
do through the churches and synagogues in our communities of today.
Allow me to project the next session or two and
fi nd what Genesis is telling us about all the mysteries of our lives. Perhaps we’ll share about how the
two stories you fi nd about the creation of the world in
Genesis, 1and 2, give us some insights to some very
pertinent questions.
The Lord’s blessing be upon you!

The History of the Shrine & LuLu (16)
Chapter LXVI I (67)
Ocean City Weekend, 1920 - 2015
By Noble Harry Speth, Historian
The earliest organized interest in regular visits to the New Jersey
shore points occurred in 1920 when the Lu Lu Yacht Club, authorized
by Potentate Charles S. Bair, purchased a waterfront property on the
International Waterway, at Venice Park, Atlantic City. The property
contained a Reception Hall, Dining Room, and Kitchen on the fi rst
floor. The second floor found nine (9) bedrooms, showers and toilets.
The facility was used extensively from 1920 to 1932 by Shriners,
their Ladies and families. It was readily accessible by train from
Center City Philadelphia and by
that new mode of transportation
– the Automobile. The property
was sold about 1934, primarily
due to the Great Depression.
An early Family Weekend
occurred in 1932 under Potentate
William McKim. The Temple was
headquartered at the Flanders
Hotel in Ocean City and “it rained LuLu Units and Clubs
both days.” No further record on Parade at Ocean
of a Family Weekend appears City, N.J. (Photos
until 1964.

The First Official Family Week- Bill Pugliese, P.C.)
end is now recognized as occurring in 1964 when Ill. Sir Harold Gerringer, Potentate (1964), was
asked to help celebrate its 85th Anniversary with “a Weekend of
display of Units and Clubs on Parade.” This Annual Caravan has
occurred every year since 1964, on the weekend following the 4th
Monday observance of Memorial Day. It has always included a
Shrine Parade on the Boardwalk from 5th Street to 12th Street.
In the early years, the parade started at 10:30 A.M., but in recent
years, the starting has been delayed as late as 1:00 P.M. (Bicycles
are permitted on the Boardwalk until Noon). On a few occasions, the
parade was cancelled due to heavy rain. The largest parade, June
6, 1980, found 499 Nobles parading. The Mayor of Ocean City would
often present a plaque, including a piece of the Boardwalk, to LuLu’s
Potentate, at the end of the parade.
Always following the parade, a luncheon and hospitality was
available to the Shriners and their families as part of a weekend
package. This was provided at the various hotels/motels where
housed or at a nearby restaurant i.e. The Bloom N Tulip, etc. In its
early years, numerous hotels/motels were needed. In recent years,
housing has been at The Tahiti, The Forum or The Impala.
Friday afternoon, families usually arrive and check-in and head
for the beach. Some, however, particularly The Divan, the Yacht
Club members and their Ladies were hosted by the Yacht Club for a
Cocktail Hours at the home of Walter and Edith Ford at 12th & Wesley. This tradition started about 1985 until Walter’s death in ____.
Friday evenings were usually devoted to musical entertainment
by LuLu’s Concert Band and/or String Band. Originally, this was on
22
the Music Pier, but later moved to the O.C. Convention Center. These
Musical Interludes ceased after 2010.
A Golf Tournament (Miniature) for Children was begun in 1998. In
2007, some (49) children participated. Somehow, every child won a
prize. There is no record of this Tournament after 2009.
Some years, a Saturday Nite Dinner was included in the Weekend
Package. In the early years, the Dinner was served on the Music Pier.
One year, over 300 were served. Other years, Dinner was at the
Flanders Hotel or The Bloom N Tulip.
Saturday evening, after dinner, it has been traditional that the
Potentate of LuLu, his Divan and their Ladies, would visit the various Hospitality Rooms.
As early as 1970, an Inter-denominational Church Service
was included on Sunday Morning, at The Tabernacle. Lu Lu
Arab Patrol members served as
Ushers. Noteworthy speakers
(religious, political and others)
brought interesting messages. LuLu
Chanters often participated. The
Church Service was not mentioned
after 1987.
Other events offered at added
cost included: a Sunday Brunch at
The Ocean City Yacht Club (1997); A Champagne Breakfast at The
Flanders Hotel (1998); a Potentate’s Dinner (several years); and a
LuLu Ladies’ Lunch and Fashion Show held at Hogates’.
Beginning in 2009, the Masonic Lodge in Ocean City, offered a
Pancake Breakfast on Saturday. This was well attended for several
years.
Various options were offered for cost of events over the years. The
“Basic Package” normally included two nights for two, Hospitality,
Saturday Luncheon and Continental breakfast (both Saturday and
Sunday). In 1967, the Basic Package for two adults was $52.00. By
1998, it reached $299.00, then returned to $245.00 for 2015.
Chairmanship of Ocean City Family Weekend is a demanding
task. In the 52 years since 1963, only seven Nobles have served in
this position for three years or more. Some chose to add Co-Chairman for specific tasks, yet still were responsible overall.
These seven Nobles are:
Ill. Sir George W. Kranich (1968 - 6 years)
Ill. Sir James Shacklett ( 1978 – 4 Years)
Albert Kammerle (1991 – 3 Years)
Noble Joseph Long (3 Years)
Noble Robert Ritter (6 Years)
Noble “Gene” Geary (4 Years)
Thank You to the above referenced Nobles and also those Nobles
who chaired fewer years. You chaired a unique event for LuLu and
kept the tradition alive and well

Keeping Our Ors in the Water
As the saying goes “remember to keep both of

Bucks County Shrine has done just that. Although
we have had some difficulties in keeping a full

Theodore Ehlke tells me he has almost obtained a
