Pilot light disaster recovery is a perfect use case for the
cloud. With cloud-based DR, companies avoid costly
capital expenses and staffing costs are minimized as the
responsibility for maintaining a dedicated disaster
recovery site belongs to the cloud service provider.

storage resources in AWS and synchronizes these
systems directly into the cloud storage resources, and
continually updates them with any changes made to the
systems running the application. This includes the full
application stack and data, operating system files,
configuration, kernel and patches and updates, and
closed-box file servers, as well.
The solution ensures that all of the information necessary
to launch up-to-date copies of the application in the cloud
are kept ready without the expense of maintaining running
cloud virtual machines for each system required by the
application.
Pilot Light DR ensures that in the event of a disaster (or
planned failover), the application systems in the cloud are

Light DR ‘ignites’ the AWS virtual machine images for each
system required by the application. In just minutes
complete applications are up and running in the cloud. To
minimize cost, CloudVelox ensures that all of the
up-to-date virtual images in the cloud are kept ready
without any burden to the IT staff. For the majority of time
spent between system outages or planned failovers, cloud
service expenses are kept to a minimum. Most cloud
service expenses for running systems only occur during
the actual disaster event or planned failover. (See figure 1.)
Disaster recovery sites benefit from thorough testing and
monitoring. Pilot Light DR for AWS enables companies to
easily test failovers for various purposes, such as system
verification, compliance, staff training, and to perform
maintenance on primary systems. The CloudVelox

the replicated systems running in the data center and the

Pilot Light DR: Impact on RTO and RPO
Pilot Light DR can address most enterprise apps needing
comprehensive back-up, quick recovery and redundancy.
Unlike active/active operating models required for very
aggressive RTOs and RPOs, a pilot light model consists of
a continuously updated environment (storage, application,
database and management layers) cloned into AWS
storage which can be "ignited" into production instances
during an event or test. Depending upon bandwidth and
the frequency of updates, RTOs and RPOs can be much
more aggressive than traditional backup solutions.
