Background
Indoor air quality (IAQ) problems, known as "Sick Building
Syndrome" have become issues of health and comfort in new
energy-efficient or recently remodeled buildings. Buildings are
called "SICK" when their occupants experience symptoms such as
headache; nausea; sensitivity to odours; and difficulty in
concentration. Frequently encountered IAQ problems are caused
by the lack of natural outside air intake, by elevated indoor
pollutants such as volatile organic coumpounds (VOC) released
by synthetic materials, cleaners, printers, paints, etc. and by
ineffective ventilation systems in buildings.
The ACME #IAQ-24 is designed to automatically control the indoor
air quality in buildings in response to the pollution levels perceived
by the occupants. The ACME #IAQ-24 works in the same manner
a human would react to atmospheric pollution: it evaluates the
indoor air quality pollution in four stages of pollution levels, namely
"CLEAN AIR", "LOW POLLUTION", "MEDIUM POLLUTION" and
"HIGH POLLUTION" and, according to the level of pollution
operates the air quality control equipment or system such as
air-cleaners, outside air dampers, fan, air conditioners, etc...
Description of Operation
The ACME #IAQ-24 uses a solid-state gas sensor that detects
deoxidization gases through an increase in electrical conductivity
when such gases are adsorbed on the sensor's surface. The
microprocessor based electronics minimize the effect of ambient
humidity and temperature variations and nuisance gases on the
sensor output. The sensitivity of the #IAQ-24 is user adjustable. At
"HIGH SENSITIVITY" the unit can detect the air pollution caused
by only one burning cigarette in a 50m3 room.

Size: 6" H x 6" W x 4" D (152 mm x 152 mm x 101 mm)
Ambient Temp.: 50-100°F (10-40°C)
The #IAQ-24 incorporates user programmable
control functions to suit the conditions and/or
requirements of the air quality controlled space such
as it's volume, air quality controller's capacity (2 step:
HIGH-LOW or 3 step: HIGH-MEDIUM-LOW) and the
method of control (ventilation or air cleaning). It can
also be operated manually on a time control basis.
Can be programmed to stop operation during the
night or weekend.
The #IAQ-24 is auto-calibrated approximately every
20 minutes.
OPERATING INSTRUCTIONS FOR THE IAQ-24
1)
BEFORE POWER-ON:
Program the IAQ-24 for 2 level (high-low) or 3-level (high-med-low) operation by setting slide
switch SW4 to desired position (2S or 3S).
2)
POWER ON:
When energized, the IAQ-24 will enter its heat-up cycle during which the "CLEAN" LED will flash
for 2 minutes. If automatic operation is desired, press push-button SW1 once to enter into
automatic mode. The "AUTO" mode LED will light to confirm automatic operation.
3)
To switch to manual operation from automatic operation ("AUTO" LED on), press SW1 once to
exit "AUTO" mode ("AUTO" LED off). This will force the low pollution level normally open relay
output contact of the IAQ-24 to close. If SW1 is pressed a second time the medium pollution level
normally open relay contact of the IAQ-24 shall close (low level opens). If SW1 is pressed a third
time the above action will repeat for the high pollution level output (medium level opens). To
revert the IAQ-24 to "AUTO" operation, press SW1 once more to exit manual mode. Status
LED's one for each output level (low, med, high) confirm proper control action.
NOTE: During manual mode "AUTO" LED is off. If 2 speed operation is selected
(refer to step 1) then the medium level is omitted.
4)
AUTO SWlTCH OFF TIMER:
The IAQ-24 has a feature whereby it will stop controlling the ventilation equipment after a
preprogrammed period. Press SW2 once for 1 hour, twice for 2 hours and three times for 4 hours
of duty time before it shuts itself off. During its "OFF" mode the IAQ-24 will not operate its lowmed-high level outputs. However should a polluted air condition be detected the "POLLUTED"
LED will still turn on.
5)
OFF SWITCH:
The IAQ-24 may be switched off (places the unit in "OFF" mode) at any time by pressing pushbutton SW3. Once in "OFF" mode push-button SW1 should be pressed one or more times to
revert the IAQ-24 to its auto or manual modes respectively.
6)
SENSITIVITY:
The sensitivity of the IAQ-24 may be increased or decreased by turning the potentiometer RV1
clockwise or counter-clockwise respectively.
i.e.: For maximum sensitivity turn RV1 to maximum clockwise.
For minimum sensitivity turn RV1 to maximum counter-clockwise.
