Electrical requirements
The SelfCheck™ system requires compliance with the following electrical specifications:
•
An outlet within 9.8 feet (3 m) of the system. This is the length of the power cable, which means this is a
cable-run specification.
•
Electrical service of 100 120 V AC, 3.0 A, 50/60 Hz, single phase or 200 V AC, 1.5 A, 50/60 Hz, single
phase.

SelfCheck System R-Series Models 8420, 8421 and 8422 Site Planning Guide
Environmental requirements
Place the SelfCheck™ system in a location that meets the following environmental requirements:
Humidity
0% to 85% RH, non-condensing
Operating temperature
50° F to 93° F
(10° C to 34° C)
Storage temperature
-22° F to 131° F
(-30° C to 55° C)
Network requirements
The 3M™ SelfCheck™ system comes with an integrated network adapter and communicates with the ILS over
an Ethernet network, which requires the following network infrastructure:
•
The standard wired Ethernet adapter requires support for 10BASE-T or 100BASE-T protocols and RJ-45
cable termination.
•
The optional wireless Ethernet adapter requires support for 102.11 g or 802.11 b protocols and must meet
the requirements listed in the following table:
Security
Signal strength
Guidelines
78-8129-4303-9C
Network security is the library’s responsibility. Security measures include but are not limited to the following:
•
Separation from the library’s public wireless network.
•
SSID transmission suppression so that the access point is not readily visible or likely to be used by library
patrons.
•
Either WPA or WEP encryption, with encryption key rotation and/or MAC address filtering.
•
If financial transactions using credit or debit cards are implemented, the library must conform to Payment
Card Industry (PCI) data security standards (DSS) developed by the PCI Standards Council. Requirements
can be found at http://www.pcisecuritystandards.org/ .
The SelfCheck™ system must be located within optimal operational range of the wireless access point, as
determined by access point signal strength, which can be analyzed and measured using software installed with
the wireless network adapter.
•
Transmitted signal strength from the wireless access point must be greater than -27dBm as measured at the
installed location of the SelfCheck system.
•
Software RSSI (received signal strength indicator) must show greater than 90% signal strength (all five bars
of RSSI are green) at the installed location of the SelfCheck system.
The following can help ensure required signal strength at the SelfCheck location:
•
Install the SelfCheck™ system within twenty feet (20 ft. [6 m]) of the wireless access point.
•
Install the SelfCheck™ system in line-of-sight of the wireless access point, with little or no metal between
the two. This will reduce radio-frequency interference or multi-path distortion effects.

Optional cash box specifications
Cash boxes are optional payment devices that can be used with the Fines and Fees option. They enable
customers to make cash payments at the SelfCheck™ system. They should be located next to the SelfCheck™
systems they serve.

Location requirements
The SelfCheck™ System must be located:
•
Within reach of an electrical outlet and network connection (if the site uses wired Ethernet)
•
No closer than 8 inches (20,3 cm) from any vertical surface to allow for proper ventilation
•
So that service access from the back is readily available. If the unit is placed close to a wall or other vertical
surface, do not bolt it in place.
•
Away from direct sunlight. (When selecting the location, remember that the angle of the sun changes with
the seasons.)
•
So that the RFID reader pad can be placed at least 3 inches (7,6 cm) from any metal (which includes metal
in the tabletop)

Location recommendations
3M recommends that you locate:
•
The system near an exit, in an area visible to patrons and staff (who can monitor use and offer assistance)
•
The system in an area with sufficient space for carts and other carrying devices.
•
Multiple system configurations
 In an area with adequate space to set up systems identically. This provides a uniform environment for
patrons.
 With a minimum separation of 44 inches (111,8 cm) on center (as shown) when tabletop multiple
systems are placed on a single desktop. This provides adequate workspace for customers.
 With adequate room to access the printer when tabletop systems are placed back-to-back

Minimum distances between RFID systems
This section lists minimum distances required between 3M RFID systems in order to avoid RF interference. In
some situations, these distances may not be sufficient, though this can only be determined on-site. Specific
systems may have additional requirements regarding cable routing, power supplies, other sources of
interference and space for clearance for maintenance, workflow, and other considerations. See the sections that
address these issues in the applicable Site Planning Guide or Architect/Contractor’s Package

SelfCheck System R-Series Models 8420, 8421 and 8422 Site Planning Guide
** Four foot [1,2 m] minimum applies to all 895 pad units and SelfCheck™ units without a cabinet. For
SelfCheck™ units enclosed in a cabinet, there are no distance restrictions.
# This restriction can be worked around by creating a single large system by running lattice to lattice cables
between “systems.” This combined system cannot exceed eight lattices.
† Measurement is from the RFID reader.
Tabletop mounting requirements
The tabletop (Model 8422) must be placed on a table, counter, or cabinet supplied by the library. The table must
meet the following requirements:
•
Be sturdy enough to support the SelfCheck system
•
Be designed so that the SelfCheck system cannot slide off or be pushed onto the floor
•
Meet the height requirements of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) when the SelfCheck system is
placed on the table

Building a custom cabinet for the Model 8422
This section provides information on how a library can build a
custom cabinet for a Model 8422 that provides an area around
the system that is flush with the processing deck. If you intend
to do this, keep the following points in mind:
•
The cabinet must fully support the system from the bottom.
•
The design must provide for access to the printer cover key
lock
•
Front and side radii of the opening must be defined using the
