Warshaw Collection of Business Americana Electricity, 1856-1980 (9.24 Cubic Feet; 28 DB, 1F) Scope and Content Notes: The electricity section is one of the largest sections found in the Warshaw Collection. While the material in the collection does range from 1856 to 1980, the bulk of the material relates to the 1890-1915 time period. As such this material is a rich source of information concerning the early development of the electric industry when numerous smaller companies were in operation. The material is present in a variety of formats. The most numerous, by far, are publications. These are in the form of general company publications, parts and product publications, journals, and a variety of more general publications. In addition, there are advertisements, company correspondence, photographs and post cards, and even a formal Thomas Edison signature from his Menlo Park days. For the most part the information in this section is directed towards the general public. However, there is a considerable amount of information created for dissemination within specific companies only. Series One: Electrical Companies This is the largest of the three series. It consists of information that can be associated with a specific electrical company. Subseries A, United States Companies: This subseries consists of information generated by companies who had their home offices in the United States. Much of this information is in the form of communication between the individual companies and their customers relating to the sale and payment for specific services rendered or products purchased. However, there is a considerable amount of more general information mainly in the form of catalogues, product publications, and even general promotional material. Subseries B, Foreign Companies: This subseries consists of electric companies operating in any other nation than the United States. It consists of only a few folders, but the information therein is much the same as in Subseries A. Note: When available, the home office location of the individual companies was listed next to the company name in the folder listings. Series Two: Related Electrical Topics This series was created because of the unique composition of the electricity section. It was For additional information, contact the Archives Center at archivescenter@si.edu or 202-633-3270 deemed appropriate to separate each of the following subseries from company series for one of a few reasons. Either it was information mostly unrelated to company information, or it was deemed to be important enough to live on its own. However, none of the information in any of the subseries was deemed important enough to live on in a full series on its own. Subseries A, Electrical Appliances: Some of the information in this series is directly related to companies such as Sunbeam and Hotpoint. It consists of general product information, catalogues, and even a few cookbooks. Subseries B, Thomas Edison: This subseries consists of general information on Thomas Edison that is not directly related to the Edison Companies section in the companies series. In this subseries there is biographical information on Edison, and a few Edison signatures and photographs. Subseries C, Miscellaneous Images and Postcards: This is a small section consisting of only one folder, and the title speaks for itself. Subseries D, Electrical Medical Applications: This subseries contains a variety of information broken down into one of two main categories. Either it is general product information, or a specific company promotion (Included some related to Thomas Edison). Subseries E, Electrical Patents: This subseries consists mainly of general information related to patent applications or legal actions relating to alleged patent infringements. Subseries F, Periodicals: There is a small amount of general information in this subseries. However, most of the information is in the form of electricity-related journals. Series Three: General Information The information in this series is information that is electricity-related, but does not fit into either of the previous two series. This information comes in the form of general product information/promotions, publications, and even a few stamps. Subject Terms: Cookbooks Gas Engineering Kitchen Appliances and Utensils Lighting Medicine Patents Periodicals Phonographs Telephone For additional information, contact the Archives Center at archivescenter@si.edu or 202-633-3270 Thomas E. Electricity, 1856-1980 (9.24 Cubic Feet; 28 DB, 1F) Scope and Content Notes: The electricity section is one of the larget sections found in the Warshaw Collection. These are in the form of general company publications , parts and product publications, journals, and a variety of more general publications. In addition, there are advertisements, company correspondence, photographs and post cards, and even a formal Thomas Edison signature from his Menlo Park days. For the most part the information in this section is directed towards the general public. However, there is a considerable amount of information created for dissemination within specific companies only. Series One: Electrical Companies This is, by far, the largest of the three series. It consists of information that can be associated with a specific electrical company. Subseries A, United States Companies: This subseries consists of information generated by companies who had their home offices in the United States. Much of this information is in the For additional information, contact the Archives Center at archivescenter@si.edu or 202-633-3270 form of communication between the individual companies and their customers relating to the sale and payment for specific services rendered or products purchased.. However, there is a considerable amount of more general information mainly in the form of catalogues, product publications, and even general promotional material. Suberies B, Foreign Companies: This subseries consists of electric companies operating in any other nation than the United States. It consists of only a few folders, but the information therein is much the same as in Subseries A. Note: When available, the home office location of the individual companies was listed next to the company name. Series Two: Related Electrical Topics This series was created because of the unique composition of the electricity section. It was deemed appropriate to separate each of the following subseries from company series for one of a few reasons. Subseries B, Thomas Edison:: This subseries consists of general information on Thomas Edison that is not directly related to the Edision Companies section in the companies series. Either it is general product information, or a specific company promotion (Inluded some related to Thomas Edison). Subseries E, Electrical Patents: This subseries consists mainly of general information related to patent applications or legal actions relating to alleged patent infringements. Subseries F, Periodicals: There is a small amount of general information in this subseries. However, most of the information is in the form of electricity-related journals. For additional information, contact the Archives Center at archivescenter@si.edu or 202-633-3270 Series Three: General Information The information in this series is information that is electricity-related, but does not fit into either of the previous two series. This information comes in the form of general product information/promotions, publications, and even a few stamps.
