Job Site Stations:
......................................................................................................
Pole change-out/transformer with a mini-derrick lift
The station will start with a job briefing with assigned crew members, from a variety of different utilities, which will
discuss different procedures of how to change this overhead transformer using a “back-yard unit”. This station will give
your employee the chance to use a device which is compact enough to be accessible into tight areas which a diggerderrick and/or bucket truck is unable to access. Proper set-up procedures will be emphasized along with the proper use
of personal protective equipment.
Three-phase tangent pole change-out and not tipping pole
This station has been a request from past schools. This station will discuss procedures with the crew of the change-out.
The crew will devise a safe way(s) to change this pole out without the option of tipping the pole and phases out of the way
with the new pole. Clearances will be observed closely as discussing minimum approach distances. The crews have the
chance to be equipped with a three phase insulated “Christmas Tree.”
Pole change out…..Picking, setting and pulling a pole with an EZ Spot UR
The EZ SPOT UR is a HEAVY DUTY POLE SETTER which is designed to handle utility poles up to 45 feet long using a skid
steer. With the Pole Setter, the operator can pick up a pole on the ground, or on a trailer, and rotate up to the vertical by
the use of a skid-steer. This job will give your employee the opportunity to use this new piece of equipment while setting
the pole in a simulated high voltage line.
Proper procedures using a hydraulic pole puller-Digger Derricks are not designed to pull poles!
Digger derrick companies have commented about the procedures of pulling poles as it stresses the ring gear, rotation motor
and other mounting devices. They recommend using a pole puller before putting undue stress on your digger derrick as it
pulls poles. At this station, your employee will be able to set-up and operate a hydraulic pole puller. The demonstration will
show your employee how valuable a pole puller is and how it will extend wear and tear on your company’s digger-derrick
unit.
How can Buckingham’s Ox Block make work easier for you?
The Ox Block™ replaces standard handline blocks & various snatch blocks and has a greater Working Load Limit than other
blocks of similar size. It’s a rope snatch block with an integrated friction bar that can be used to:
• Rescue It – Rated for two person rescue
• Lower It – control heavy loads with the friction bar
• Raise It – with or without pulleys
• Snub It – tie off load with the friction bar
Weigh Station for Aerial Buckets
How much are you putting in your bucket? We put so much material in our aerial units daily and may never think how
much we could be overloading our unit’s rating. This station will have a one or a two man bucket liner placed on a weight
cell and the instructor will lecture on overloads and demonstrate placing line material, with a lineman, in the bucket and
weights will be checked….you may be surprised how much everything weighs!
Tree leaning/laying on a three-phase line
A hands-on station demonstrating the required steps to cut/remove a tree off of a primary line, Safety procedures of
grounding and testing procedures along with the safe operation of a chainsaw will be stressed. PPE of chainsaw chaps
and hearing protection will be required/furnished. If you have the equipment available to bring, please bring your
company’s wood cutting PPE along.
Convert A-1 to an A-6 and A-6 to A-1 (Convert and single phase tangent pole to a double dead-end
and back to the tangent pole) and Changing Out a Voltage Regulator.
Procedures will be reviewed and clearance requirements will be strictly adhered to. These stations will be excellent
reminders, as we may have become a bit slack in our procedures of rubber gloving and voltage regulators. We will remind
the rubber gloving crews the safety they need to adhere to so they can stay safer while they preform hot line procedures in
the field, back at your utility.
Stations may change due to unforeseen circumstances, availability of instructors, equipment, and weather.
