Post:
Science Technician
Salary Grade:
Point 22 of the SFC Support Staff pay scale, currently
£17,346 per annum.
Responsible to:
Head of Department
Key Purpose:
1
To service the teaching laboratories of the department in terms of upkeep
and practical work requirements of the teaching staff.
Responsibilities:
1
To participate in key College processes as required.
2
To act at all times in accordance with College policies e.g. Health and
Safety, Equality & Diversity, Inclusion, Quality Assurance and the College
Charter.

To work flexibly in the interests of the organisation as required.

To participate in performance reviews and to undertake staff development
activities as appropriate.

To be responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children,
young people and vulnerable adults you are responsible for, or come into
contact with.
Duties and Responsibilities:
A
To prepare and maintain apparatus and stock solutions for class use, within
the guidelines lay down by the DES.
B
To set up apparatus for experiments and record schedules of class practical
exercises.
C
To construct simple equipment and models to support practical work where
necessary.

To provide technical help, preparing materials, media and cultures for
individual students during special investigation assignments.
E
To assist teaching staff during experiments as requested.
F
To be responsible for cleaning, repairing and maintaining equipment and
glassware and provide general maintenance of laboratories (including the
cleaning of sinks and stock and laundering of towels and lab coats).
G
To conduct routine inspection of plugs and flexes on mains-powered
equipment.
H
To complete stock control of all materials, equipment, apparatus, software
and chemicals including purchasing; re-ordering; and creating and
maintaining comprehensive stock records.
I
To supervise and secure laboratory equipment.
J
To provide the department with audiovisual equipment and maintain
audio/visual records.
K
To care for plants and animals in science laboratories.
L
To take reasonable care for the Health and Safety of self and others who
may be affected by acts or occasions related to your work, including the safe
storage and disposal of chemicals and disposal of all hazardous biological
waste and cultures.
M
Carry out other routine and ad hoc administrative tasks as directed by the
HoD/Principal.
Variations to the job description may be required from time to time and when this arises
there will be a discussion with the post holder.
