The tests were made for the Ministry of Transportation the Committee of Warning
Devices and Safety
1. GENERAL
The butterfly ( active solar powered butterfly ) is an optical vertical guiding and warning device
that reflects incident light by means of retroreflectors in order to warn, guide and inform
the road users.
Model: YH-HL
1.1. The tests were made
according to the following standards and specifications. At this time
there is no available Israel standard specific for butterflies. The specimens were tested according
to the following standards:
•
C.I.E. Commission Internationale de l’ eclairage- Recommendation for Surface Colours for Visual
Signalling Publication C.I.E. No 39-2 1983 (2nd ed.)
•
CEN 60529 1991 . Degrees of Protection Provided by Enclosures ( IP code ) .
•
C.I .E. Publication No 54 1982 Retroreflection Definition and Measurement.
•
C.I.E. Technical Com. Report No 72 . Guide to the Properties and Uses of Retroreflectors at Night.
•

2
manufacturers declaration.
2.9. The materials :
2.9.1. The body of the solar powered retroreflective butterfly is constructed of
polycarbonate is installed on white painted Steel sheets protected with silicon
against water and dust.
3 . The results of retroreflective measurements and chromaticity coordinates
of the white and red elements:
3.1. The panel is of trapezoid shape
3.2. The area of the panel: 14 cm2
3.3. The emitting diodes installed on the panel are covered with layers of polycarbonate.
3.4. The results of retroreflective white elements:
The retroreflection coefficient 340 candela / m2/ lux
3.5. The results of retroreflective red elements:
The retroreflection coefficient 54 candela / m2/ lux
3.6. The retroreflective material: High Intensity
The measurements were made with field retroreflectometer ART Inc –US
3.7. The results of chromaticity coordinates of the white elements
x
y
0.350
0.360
Coefficient of luminance 0.7
3.8. The results of chromaticity coordinates of the red elements

Coefficient of luminance 0.2
The requirements of the chromaticity coordinates ( corner coordinates ) having x and y values are
given in I.S standards
3.9. Colours of the light signals: yellow and red
3
The tests were performed with Minolta chromameter.
3.10 The luminance values measured during the flashing period: 25 candela/ m2
The tests were performed with Minolta luminance meter
SATISFACTORY TO STANDARD
4 .Mechanical testing .
4.1. . Corrosion resistance ( salt spray test )
4.1.1. The testing carried out included immersion of the butterflies in a natrium chloride solution
during 30 days .
No corrosion was observed . High degree of protection. Good resistance to
weathering.
SATISFACTORY TO STANDARD
4.2. Impact test .
4.2.1.. Impact test with solid steel ball mounted on pendulum
4.3. IP test
4.3.1. Protection tested against water and dust .
SATISFACTORY for the visual and mechanical functions
4.4 The external vertical surface of the butterflies was completely weatherproof .
THE TESTED BUTTERFLIES ARE FULLY COMPLIANT WITH
STANDARDS.
