KHALIL Emad Associate Professor Alexandria University (Egypt) Antiquity BIOGRAPHY Dr Emad Khalil is an Associate Professor of Maritime Archaeology at the Alexandria University, Egypt. He has been involved in maritime and underwater archaeology since the early nineties. In 1994 Dr Khalil obtained his BA in Greek and Roman Archaeology from the Alexandria University and in 1999 he was employed as a teaching assistant at the Department of Archaeology and GraecoRoman Studies of the Alexandria University. He then obtained MA and PhD degrees in Maritime Archaeology from the University of Southampton, UK in 2002 and 2005 respectively. Between 1994 and 2001 Dr Khalil was employed by the Institute of Nautical Archaeology (INA) as the Deputy Director of the institute's branch in Egypt. And between 2007 and 2009 he was employed as a Research Fellow by the University of Southampton, UK. Between 2006 and 2009, Dr Khalil coordinated an EU-Tempus funded project aiming to create the first academic centre in the Arab Region dedicated to maritime archaeological studies, based at the Alexandria University, Egypt. He is currently the Director of the Alexandria Centre for Maritime Archaeology and Underwater Cultural Heritage. He is also the President of the International Committee on Underwater Cultural Heritage (ICUCH) of the ICOMOS. Dr Khalil has been involved in several maritime and underwater archaeological projects that took place in Egypt, including the Pharos Project, the Sadana Island Shipwreck Excavation, the Lake Mareotis Research Project and the Northwest Coast Shipwreck Survey. He has also given numerous lectures and presentations on maritime and underwater archaeology in different countries.
