Audible Alarm
The Safety Of Your Solar Energy System Near At Hand
BENEFITS
Australian Standards Compliant
SolaGRID Audible Alarm complies with the new
AS/NZS 5033:2012 Standard (clause 3.4.3)
that requires low voltage PV arrays to be
equipped with an alarm that alerts the solar
user when an earth fault has occurred and is
used to initiate corrective action.
Visual and Audible Alarm Notification
SolaGRID Audible Alarm provides both visual
(red flashing light) and audible (beeping –
74 dB @ 1 m) alarm of a fault at the inverter.
Geared for Fault Clearance
The AS/NZS Standard 5033 stipulates that
the external alarm must repeat at least once
per hour until the fault is cleared. SolaGRID
Audible Alarm goes one better. Although the
user can push a mute button to silence the
audible alarm, the red light will continue to
flash until the fault is cleared.
SAFETY FIRST:
Solar arrays are generally situated in exposed areas and are subject to
environmental and operational conditions (e.g., lightning, vermin, wind, or
mechanical impact) that can cause a safety hazard, such as a short-circuit or
earth fault. While many solar inverters have local indication that trigger if a
fault has occurred, the inverter may be located in a garage, switch room or
rooftop where operational staff or a solar system owner may not notice the
warning – a dangerous situation potentially leading to electrocution or fire.
The SolaGRID Audible Alarm is a compact, lightweight safety device that
ensures solar power users are alerted, both through audible and visual alarm,
if an earth fault affects an inverter. The unit can be placed in areas near the
solar user such as a kitchen or office.
SolaGRID Audible Alarm puts the safety of your solar energy
system near at hand.
Single Alarm Covers Multiple Inverters
A single SolaGRID Audible Alarm will track and
alert an earth fault from multiple inverters.
The user can then check the inverter displays
to determine which inverter carries the fault.
SMA and Power One Compatible
The SolaGRID Audible Alarm is compatible with
highest quality inverter products, including
Power One and SMA.

Installation and safety
requirements for
photovoltaic (PV)
arrays
Clause 3.4.3 Earth fault alarm
In systems where the PV array is operating
at LV, an earth fault alarm system shall be
installed which, on an earth fault, causes an
action to be initiated to correct the earth fault.
The alarm system is to continue repeating its
operation at least at hourly intervals until the
earth fault is corrected.
The alarm system may be an audible signal
placed in an area where operational staff or
system owners will be aware of the signal or
another form of fault communication, e.g. fax,
email, SMS or similar, shall be applied to inform
to the system operator. A set of operational
instructions shall be provided to the system
owner that includes the actions to take when
the alarm operates.
NOTE: Many inverters have earth fault
detection and indication in the form of indicator
lights. This indication is generally not in an
area that will be noticed. IEC 62109-2 requires
that inverters have a local indication and also
a means of signalling an earth fault externally.
The external alarm function should be used to
‘cause an action to be initiated to correct the
earth fault’, i.e. by placing a light or audible
signal where it will be noticed.
