Returning to Australia in 1942 he joined the 29 Infantry Brigade as brigade major serving in Papua and New Guinea. In 1945 he was posted to RMC as an instructor. He became the recognised authority in Australia on early military matters, particularly prior to Federation. Austin's research produced articles for the Australian Army Journal (on the activities of the New South Wales Corps). This developed into an interest in the British Regiments which garrisoned the colonies until 1870 and led to the publication of his book The Army in Australia 1840-1850 by the Department of Defence. He also produced articles on soldiering in early Australia (extracts from contemporary newspapers) and on the use of Army records (especially the complex AJCP) which appeared regularly in Sabretache. Austin was also a consultant for the Australian Dictionary of Biography for more than 20 years, in 1972 becoming a foundation member of the Armed Services Working Party for the Australian Dictionary of Biography.
