President’s Message
"WE ARE ALSO ACTIVELY PROGRESSING
A NEW AND LONG OVERDUE ROLLING,
PLANNED MAINTENANCE PROGRAMME
FOR OUR AGING CLUBHOUSE..."
Dear Fellow Members
39th Annual POT Games
Tradition is the hallmark of our Club and I am personally
delighted to see that we have upheld this important
tradition with the Singapore Cricket Club for 39 years
and counting. The POT Games is an annual competition
with the Singapore Cricket Club, across various sport and
recreational areas. Every two years we play host, and
this year, we’re delighted to have everyone back at The
Tanglin Club, Saturday, 1 October, for the Dinner and Prize
Presentation, in the Churchill Room. I wish all our competitors
the very best of luck and look forward to seeing you at
the Dinner.
Half-Time
Our Treasurer, Mr Zoeb Sadiq, has included his report on
the Club’s financial health in our magazine on pages 3
& 4. I encourage you to take a few moments to apprise
yourself of the salient financial points.
Guest Room Update
With the recent re-openings of the Library, Hair Salon
and Tangles, we now turn our attention to the new guest
rooms, approved by Membership at the recent Annual
General Meeting. As you may have ‘heard’ by now,
demolition of the former Spa on the 5th floor of the
Sports Complex began mid-September. There is quite
a bit of hacking required and unfortunately the noise
is unavoidable. We thank you for your patience and
understanding. If all proceeds to plan, the rooms should
be available for use by April. We shall certainly keep
you posted.
Blanc Party
Mark your social calendar for 15 October and be sure to
join us for the party of the year. Although the Churchill
Room has sold out, spaces are available at the other
venues. Please note the details located to the left of my
message. With free-flow drinks, live music by Shaggies and
Stephen Francis & Friends, and a buffet feast, the Member
price of $49.95 presents sensational value. Annually we
offer this party at a subsidised price, as a way to bring
together our Tanglin Community. I encourage you to
gather your mates, and join us! This is a great way to get
to meet fellow Members.
Project Update
We are also actively progressing a new and long overdue
rolling, planned maintenance programme for our aging
Clubhouse and the business centre plans are currently
being crystallised. We shall update you on these projects,
the Cinema, and the Club Development Task Force in the
November magazine.
Annual Tree Lighting
Save the date for our Christmas Tree Lighting on
27 November, the highlight of our annual calendar. It is
an age-old tradition of the Club and great for both the
young and old. We will have our very own Tanglin Club
Choir grace the event with Christmas carols, and light
refreshments for Members to enjoy. I hope to see you and
your family there.
Sprucing Up
As shared in earlier communications, we are in the midst of
giving the Clubhouse a much needed fresh coat of paint.
Until approximately mid-November, the Sports Complex
will be receiving attention. During this time, there will be
some reduction in our open space parking. The Sports
Complex Car Park will be painted from 3 October until
11 November, whilst the Linkbridge will be painted between
24 October and 4 November. The Main Clubhouse Car
Park will commence late October and continue until
mid-January 2017. We apologise for any inconvenience
this may cause, but I am sure you will agree that this is an
important undertaking.
Convenor Highlights
As previously shared, in the coming months, you will be
hearing from the Convenors, in turn. They will be sharing
with you highlights from their portfolio. This update will
replace the Editor’s Message and in so doing, will provide
more comprehensive communication to you.
And on a final note, I’d like to wish our Hindu Members,
Happy Deepavali!
Sincerely
Robert Wiener

Half-year Treasurer's Report
A Surplus of $85K
vs Budget Deficit
of $500K
The Club’s financial performance for the six-month period from 1 February to
31 July 2016 continued to show a positive trend, albeit at a lower level than
the same period last year. The Income & Expenditure Account at Operating
level showed a SURPLUS of $85K although the budget had estimated a deficit
of over $500K. The cash flow and the net assets of the Club remained similar,
providing comfort of a solid Balance Sheet.
However, the Club is anticipated to face headwinds with growing staffing
costs and a plateauing of F&B revenue. The General Committee (GC) and
Management are conscious of these areas and are taking proactive steps
to address them.
A brief analysis of the Club’s financial performance based on the unaudited management accounts follows:
Revenue Growth
Sustained
REVENUE
Total Operating Revenue for the six months was $12.6 million (Budget: $13.0m / LY: $12.0m). There was
an increase in revenue over last year by $600K, but it was slightly lower than the budget, primarily due to
fewer F&B covers served and the closure of Tangles since April 2016 (Tangles resumed operations on selfserve café modus on 18 August 2016).
OPERATING EXPENDITURE
Operating Costs have kept rising relentlessly. This was especially so in respect of staff cost which rose to
$6.6m for six months an increase of $580K or 10% over last year. Management, in anticipation of a rising
cost trends, budgeted staff cost at $7.0m for the period, but under the GC’s direction to maintain a firm
cap on staffing cost, the expenditure has been reined in to some extent, thus showing a reduced cost
and favourable variance of $360K against budget.
• Managed
Staff Costs
• Savings on
Utility Costs
• Reduction in
F&B Cost
On the brighter side, cost savings continue to be achieved in several areas. More significantly, there was a
saving on utilities of about $60K over last year and a favourable variance of $130K against budget (Actual:
$702K / Budget: $830K / LY: $759K). Also notable Management’s continued efforts resulted in reduction in
the overall ratio of F&B cost to 41.8% (Budget: 42.2% / LY: 42.6%), a cost savings of $23K against the budget
and $46K over last year. This was achieved by menu engineering and minor price adjustments.
OTHER OPERATING INCOME
The two streams of income under the above caption are from Membership Entrance Fees and Investment
Income.

Cautious
Optimism for the
Financial Year to
End on a Positive
Note
Entrance fees revenue pales in comparison to last year’s revenue of $5.5m as the Club has now reached
Planned Total Member capacity of 4,000 (principal/voting Members). Hence, for the current 6-month
period, entrance fees account for only $1.7m, reflecting restricted membership availability as a result of
nett attrition.
Investment income of $578K was higher by $140K than last year due to increased dividends and interest.
The average yield on investments was 3.94% (Budget: 3.5% / LY 2.91%).
NET SURPLUS FOR THE SIX MONTH PERIOD TO 31 JULY WAS $333K – A POSITIVE OUTCOME.
MEMBERS’ EQUITY
Overall, Membership Fund & Reserves as at 31 July 2016 remain at $71.6m, close to that of last year.
This comprises of:
Property & Fixed Assets: $36.6m
Investments at book value: $30.6m (Fair Market Value $31.5m)
Net Current Assets: $4.3m
The Investments of $30.6m are stated at book value as at 31
July 2016. The fair market valuation of these investments is
$31.5m. Since the Club’s policy is only to book realised gains
on investments, the fair market value appreciation of $840K is
not reflected in the six-month management accounts.

FORECAST FOR NEXT SIX MONTHS
The main stream of revenue and costs are food and beverage
related. Given the challenging environment in which the Club
is operating, I am cautiously optimistic the financial year will
end on a positive note. The achievement of Net Surplus of
$333K against a breakeven budget at the half-year mark
provides encouragement to the Management and GC for
delivering a sound financial position going forward.

General Manager’s Message
Dear Members
Let Us Entertain You!
After the success of our 150th anniversary carnival last year, we are
bringing back the giant pool inflatable, cotton candy, popcorn, ice
cream and more, in honour of our youngest Members, on 8 October.
Our Youth Team has also organised various activities on the day which
you may wish to partake in. So, mums, dads, grandparents, round up
the kids and join us at the Poolside. For more details, please refer to the
left-facing page. ‘Grown-ups’ get their turn to celebrate on the 15th!
Happy Deepavali
Personally, I always look forward to the Little India light-up each year
and the festive ‘magic’ that the lights and Deepavali bring with
them. The festival spiritually signifies the victory of light over darkness,
knowledge over ignorance, and hope over despair. We can all benefit
from some sparkle and en'light'enment.
This month, our featured promotions turn in the direction of Deepavali.
Whether you choose to enjoy our sumptuous ‘Passage to India” Sunday
Lunch spread in the Churchill Room, our Indian cuisine demonstration
with Chef Joshi, our Wheelhouse Indian Express Lunch features, or our
Deepavali High Tea, I’m sure the Culinary Team will not disappoint.
Festive Wine Sale
Before you know it, Christmas and the New Year will be here. If you
are keen to stock up for the festivities, mark your calendar for the 5th of
November, and be sure to join us in the Main Clubhouse Lobby, daylong, for a fabulous wine tasting and fair from Treasury Wine Estates.
Our first such sale earlier this year was such an incredible success that
we’re bringing you an even better one this November. We are featuring
over 75 labels, an opportunity to speak to wine makers, enjoy canapés,
taste dozens of wines, and load up your ‘cellar’ at prices, lower than
anywhere on the island!
Entertaining Made Easy
Our Culinary Team is once again rolling out their mouth-watering menu
of holiday favourites, available for takeaway. Whether you choose
to entertain at home, require a hostess gift, or plan to celebrate the
holidays at the Club, we hope to be able to facilitate your entertainment
needs. Last month, I shared that we’ve made our collection of wine
and spirits available for purchase online. To visit our online bottle shop,
please go to www.tanglinclub.org.sg/online-bottle-shop.html.
“Lighten Up”
With all the festivities ahead, you may wish to kick start or enhance
your fitness levels by joining Aziz, and his team for fitness classes or
personal training. On page 25, our personal trainers are all featured
and together, the Fitness Team offers 45 lessons per week. Not to be
missed is our 8-Hour Yoga Retreat & Workshop on 20 October for stress
relief and rejuvenation.
Mosquito Control
Turning toward some housekeeping matters, in view of the recent Zika
virus outbreak in Singapore, the Club has doubled up on its fogging
efforts. Instead of the usual Monday morning fogging, we are now
fogging on both Monday and Friday mornings. In addition, our Facilities
and Housekeeping Teams have placed anti-mosquito devices into all
gutters and drains, and arranged to have all dry leaf areas checked
and stagnant water removed, if any.
Contact Details
We have been asked by the General Committee to tighten the
Clubhouse to ensure greater exclusivity and safety. As we make such
improvements, please be sure to update your particulars and your

Continuing along on administrative matters, if you
have not as yet arranged to make payment via

ask that you please consider doing so. The form is
available on our website, or from either the Sports
or Front Desk.
We’re Listening!
The Tanglin Team strives to continually raise the bar
and your feedback helps to guide us to that end.
October will see us release a survey that explores
your sentiments toward our sports and recreational
facilities and activities. We encourage you to let
us know how we can better meet your needs by
taking time to fill out the brief survey.

10 Good Reasons to Visit Tangles
We are pleased to inform Members that the Tangles Café has re-opened. We have taken on
board thoughtful feedback shared with us at the various ‘menu focus group meetings’ and
are excited to further diversify our range of products and services for you. Here is a summary
of what we have done:
1
EARLIER OPTION FOR BREAKFAST
Tangles opens daily at 8.00am. Grab a bite or have a breakfast smoothie before you hit the
gym or tennis courts.
2
OPEN FOR DINNER
Instead of the kitchen closing at 6.00pm like in the past, Tangles now closes at 9.00pm (last
order at 8.45pm). This means you can have your dinner at Tangles after your evening game.
While Tangles is closed on Tuesdays, the Beer Garden is open from 8.00am to 10.00pm on
Tuesdays.
3
HEALTHIER DISHES & MORE VEGGIES
We hear you! We bring you a variety of salads, sandwiches and wraps. Don’t like what we
have? Create your own by choosing your preferred base and favourite toppings – great for
vegetarians! Please visit our website or drop by Tangles to view the menu.
4
MORE CASUAL
Some Members have commented that they would like a casual café with a more relaxed
dress code as an alternative to the Tea Room. We hope you will enjoy the new Tangles with a
faster, more casual, self-serve environment. Sports attire is welcome here.
5
FAMILY-FRIENDLY
Children are welcome at Tangles! In fact, we have a ‘Kids Corner’ on our menu that includes
Cheeseburger, Chicken Tenders, Chicken Quesadillas, and Hot Dog. These dishes are served
with a side salad and/or sweet potato French fries.
6
SWEET POTATO FRENCH FRIES
A very popular request from Members – we now have them at Tangles!
7
BETTER QUALITY COFFEE
Coffee enthusiasts, you’ll be pleased to know that Tangles uses a barista coffee machine,
which means that we’re able to serve you better quality coffee.
8
LAPTOP FRIENDLY
There are power points available at the computer bar and row of seats located at the side of
Tangles, so this is a great place to park yourself with a laptop.
9
NEWSPAPERS
Daily papers are available at Tangles, so catch up on the latest news while having your
breakfast here.
10
ASIAN FOOD
For those who prefer Asian food, we serve a different Asian dish each day. Please check with
our friendly staff for our daily specials.

BOOK OF THE MONTH:
COMETH THE HOUR
by Jeffrey Archer
Cometh the Hour opens with the reading
of a suicide note, which has devastating
consequences for Harry and Emma Clifton,
Giles Barrington and Lady Virginia.
Giles must decide if he should withdraw from
politics and try to rescue Karin, the woman
he loves, from behind the Iron Curtain. But is
Karin truly in love with him, or is she a spy?
Lady Virginia is facing bankruptcy, and can
see no way out of her financial problems,
until she is introduced to the hapless Cyrus T.
Grant III from Baton Rouge, Louisiana, who's
in England to see his horse run at Royal Ascot.
Sebastian Clifton is now the Chief Executive
of Farthings Bank and a workaholic, whose
personal life is thrown into disarray when he
falls for Priya, a beautiful Indian girl. But her
parents have already chosen the man she
is going to marry. Meanwhile, Sebastian's
rivals Adrian Sloane and Desmond Mellor are
still plotting to bring him and his chairman
Hakim Bishara down, so they can take over
Farthings.
Harry Clifton remains determined to get
Anatoly Babakov released from a gulag in
Siberia, following the international success
of his acclaimed book, Uncle Joe. But then
something unexpected happens that none
of them could have anticipated.
Cometh the Hour is the penultimate book
in the Clifton Chronicles and, like the five
previous novels – all of which hit the New
York Times bestseller list – showcases Jeffrey
Archer's extraordinary storytelling with his
trademark twists.

Balut Section
The Singapore Cricket Club (SCC) hosted the 4th round of the 32nd Inter-Club Balut competition in August, and SCC is known to
put on an excellent spread and generally be very good hosts. This time was no exception, and they decided that hospitality be
damned by winning this round of the series. Andrew Goh from the Singapore Recreation Club took the honours for the highest
total score, and our own Tanglin Team 3 came in a creditable third. Grace Goh and Susie Tan stocked up their wine collection
with spot prize wins.
Our monthly game at the Fireplace was attended by 14 Members, who after 6 rounds of thumping the tables, pronounced that
the tables are sound and of excellent workmanship! Convenor Sethuraman, bravely fighting off various frogs in his throat and
minor irritants in his throat, shook hands with Padmini Panikar for her total score 647 points. She also had the highest game score
of 143, but according to the rules, that prize went to the next highest score of 138 recorded by Scribe.
Next month we do the 5th round of the Inter-Club, and six of our players head off to Kuching to play in the 2nd Invitational there.
More when we know more, so stay tuned.

HUGH AT THE HELM, KUDOS TO ANDREW HIGHLIGHT AUGUST SECTION NIGHT
With the postponement of the Resolution Trophy to September, the highlight of the month fell on the August 18 Section Night
which saw a good turnout of nine section fund members. July Section Night Winner Andrew Lim started the first game of the
evening looking to repeat his success from the previous month. His opponent, Senior Handicap Champion Hugh Scheffer,
thought otherwise and promptly defeated him. Hugh continued his fine form throughout the night, winning four of five frames, to
be crowned the October Winner. A special mention goes to Andrew for playing the second most number of games (four) and
for the shot of the night, a wicked double off the bottom cushion.

HOIR
August saw the Tanglin Club Choir joining in an evening of song and piano in the Churchill Room with boy soprano Mikey
Robinson and pianist/accompanist Bertrand Lee. This is the first time the Choir has performed in support of professional artists.
It was a sit down dinner and the performances were given between the different courses. The second set of the evening saw
the Tanglin Club Choir join the stage with Mikey as soloist in ‘Ave Maria’ (Bach and Gounod’s version) and the English song
‘Scarborough Fair’ (Traditional). The Choir then followed by singing the all-time favourite Chinese song, ‘Ye Lai Xiang’.
It was obvious that the audience thoroughly enjoyed the event and appreciated the stellar performances throughout the
evening.
We were delighted to hear the following from a General Committee (GC) Member after forwarding a video of the evening to
the GC – “Congratulations on an excellent performance. It is satisfying to see such significant progress for all your hard work. I
look forward to the Choir doing well in the year ahead. Franklin.”
The Choir had much fun practising for the show and is now looking forward to the upcoming Tree Lighting Performance in late
November. Meanwhile, as a charity outreach, we are taking our songs to share with the elderly at selected residences during
October.
The Choir always welcomes new Members and is hoping to inspire more people to take up singing. Do visit us any Wednesday
at the Theatrette from 7.30pm to 9.30pm. For enquiries, please call 6622 0438 or email events@tanglin-club.org.sg.

DARTS AND THE NATIONAL DAY CELEBRATION
On 20 August 2016 at 3.00pm, the Darts Section Members met at the newly refurbished Tangles to celebrate Singapore’s
51st National Day. It provided an opportunity for the Members to engage in friendly, fun and competitive darts.
The delightful atmosphere further enhanced the warmth of being together with friends once again at the Tangles. All the
winners walked away with Tanglin Club F&B vouchers. Light refreshments were served. We thank Eunice for helping with the
posters as well as organising the refreshments.

AUGUST IN HOUSE GAME
In a very notable August week in Singapore’s sporting annals and preceding the
100m Butterfly Final in Rio, sixteen Tanglin golfers took some time out from their
respective Olympic pursuits to chase the little white ball around the fairways of Seletar
Country Club.
This in-house event offered the opportunity for Golf Section Members to hone their skills
on one of Singapore’s finest courses in time for the upcoming Tanglin Major, the Annual
Golf Championship.
The sky being a little overcast provided ideal conditions for a very pleasant game of
golf with the competition being of a Stableford format.
Following the game, players gathered at the terrace to share some of the day’s
experiences and satisfy appetites with some traditional Makan Kecil and beer. As part
of the après golf session, flights of golfers formed teams for a mini quiz. The captain’s
flight demonstrated their prowess on Olympics trivia and came out clear winners. Well
done to the members of the winning team – Alex Eow, Hugh Hoyes Cock, Paul Gelardi
and Wolfgang Hollerman.
Golf Winners for the Day
Paul Healy (37 points)
Jurgen Martiens (34 points)
Alex Eow (33 points)
A consolation lucky draw was also made in which Rohit Chawla masterfully picked his
own name out of the hat.

FUN AND BBQ FOR
TANGLIN CLUB FAMILIES
The 2nd Fun Bowls and BBQ day on 29 July
proved to be popular. This event, held every
last Friday of the month, had many families
participating with their teenage and young
children. They had a thoroughly exciting
bowling day, ending with a sumptuous BBQ
dinner, prepared no less than by the Lawn
Bowls Convenor himself, Rodger Kimpton.
Unfortunately, the 3rd session scheduled on 26
August had to be cancelled due to the heavy
haze.

FRIENDLY GAME WITH VISITING BANDUNG TEAM
On Friday, 5 August, the touring Bandung Squash team
from Indonesia visited The Tanglin Club for a friendly squash
competition. The team was very strong on paper with 6
players all graded A2 or better and featured 2 players who
won silver medals in the jumbo doubles competition at last
year's South East Asian Games.
We were able to pull together a reasonably competitive side
and decided to hold 5 singles matches, with a range of other
fun doubles being played over the course of the night. Team
Tanglin got off to a great start with our Squash and Tennis
Club Champion Rob Chen winning 3-0 over SEA Games silver
medallist Sandi Arisma.
At the completion of the singles matches, the Indonesia team
was winning 3-2. So in order to try to level the tie, we put up 1
jumbo doubles match in which Tanglin was able to overcome
Ade Furqon, also a SEA Games gold medallist, who found the weight of his Manager Dahni too much to carry. It was a very
diplomatic 3-3 result and we proceeded with the makan and refreshments to end an enjoyable night with the visitors.

TEN-PIN BOWLING NATIONAL DAY CHAMPIONSHIP ON 29 AUGUST 2016
UPCOMING EVENTS
Saturday, 8 October – Inter Club Friendly Game with SRC
Monday, 17 October – 10 Pin Long Kang Day
Monday, 14 November – Annual Ten Pin Bowling
Championship 2016
All proud Singaporeans celebrate our country’s National
Day in some way or form. Many wear red and white on
9 August and at the National Day Parade. Our Ten-Pin
Bowling Section celebrated the nation’s birthday on 29
August 2016 with a National Day Championship.
Enthusiastic Members turned up for an evening of joyous
celebration at Singapore Island Country Club (SICC), the
ladies outnumbering the men. But that did not deter the
men as Andrew surged forward with a powerful strike. Not
to be beaten, our reigning champion, Pamela, matched
Andrew’s play with her own strike. Then Mylinh followed
suit, closely repeated by MC. It looked as though it was
going to be an evening of spectacular strikes.
Consistent in form, Andrew continued with spares and
strikes, impressing all those who attended. Akiko was cross
with herself for vacillating between landing the ball in the
longkang and surprising strikes. Phine told Akiko that she
was doing well since Phine herself did not even have one
single strike throughout the championship. Madeleine
was consistently steady with her frequent strikes. It was
good to have Jane back with us after her long absence.
The evening ended with a lovely meal at the Tavern,
back at The Tanglin Club. It was not surprising that
Andrew came in 1st Place, Nancy in 2nd and Madeleine
in 3rd. Vouchers were given to our top three winners.
Peter appointed Phine to hand out the prizes as she was
the best dressed (perhaps said with tongue-in-cheek)
in her orange sarong kebaya as she had come straight
from her literary talks. Mylinh mused that perhaps a prize
should be given to the lowest scorer as well. The fact that
we were not a large group made it possible to capture
the sense of camaraderie and each felt that we were
amongst friends. Max faithfully turned up to take photos
of everyone at dinner.

NATIONAL DAY TENNIS
SOCIALS IN RED AND WHITE!
TENNIS FRIENDLY MATCH WITH
CHINESE SWIMMING CLUB
Over 30 Members of the Tanglin Club Tennis Section
turned up in full force – decked out in red and white
in their tennis tops, skirts, shoes, caps and even
bandanas – to celebrate Singapore’s National Day!
And to add to the truly Singaporean flavour of the
day, the food and beverage team served up a
motley spread of culinary delights popular with the
locals – beef salad, sayur lodeh, Thai green curry and
fried rice. It was gratifying to see such a large turnout
of Section Members proudly pledging their support
for the nation’s 51st birthday amid the camaraderie of
great social tennis. A big thank you to our ladies tennis
captain, Lillian Lum, for organising this enjoyable
celebration!
They might be from the Chinese Swimming Club, but they proved to
be remarkable tennis opponents too! On 31 July 2016, The Tanglin
Club hosted a tennis friendly match with the versatile tennis team
of the Chinese Swimming Club, drawing crowds of supporters from
both clubs who cheered on their friends with high-fives all-round at
each killer slice, top spin or smash by our best players.
The friendly match took up almost all the courts (save one for our
usual Sunday tennis section hours) as evenly matched players
battled to gain ground on their respective overall scores. After a
gruelling four hours of intense play of twenty games, The Tanglin
Club finally emerged the winner in the friendly. Congratulations to
our Tanglin Club tennis team and many thanks to our ladies tennis
captain, Lillian Lum, for organising this friendly.

JUNIORS REPRESENTING OUR CLUB
It was great to see our young ones representing
the Club in the kiddy version of inter-club. This
season saw two Tanglin Club teams competing in
TennisHub-Smash! Junior Tennis League. Our mini
ambassadors proudly showcased the Club to their
opponents and made many new friends along
the way.
Congratulations to our 12B team, Tanglin 7Up, who
clinched 3rd spot in a very tightly contested match.
Tanglin Club Junior Tournament Series #3
Unfortunately, due to the haze, the 26 to 28 August
event had to be cancelled. It is a shame as it would
have been a great turnout.
Series #4, the final one for the year, happens from
11 to 13 November. Registration sheets will be
posted on Level U1’s noticeboard a month before
the event. Registration closes the weekend before
the event.
