TRENDS
2002 Global Security Market Prospects
Bridging the Gap Between the Analog and Digital Worlds by
Taking the Strategic Step Towards IP-Surveillance
ast year’s tragic events of
September 11th did not
awaken us to the
importance of security for the
first time, but they certainly
intensified our efforts toward
achieving greater security
where we live, work, and play.
Along with biometric
technologies like face
recognition, CCTV surveillance
has been receiving considerable
attention lately in terms of
what this technology can do to
help us manage our security
environments more effectively.
In the U.S. alone, some two
million CCTV cameras are
installed each year and the
CCTV segment constitutes a
significant portion of the $4
billion U.S. “security
market.”[1], as it does in Asia,
Europe, and Latin America.
L
The rapid growth of CCTV has come
about due to a technological revolution in
the security market sparked by the
convergence of IP networks with
traditional CCTV, the growth of digital
video recorders, and the spread of video
distributed over the Internet. These
technological developments have also
heightened interest and demand for a new
form of surveillance in which users can
remotely monitor people and property, as
well as industrial processes.
This new Internet Protocol (IP)surveillance solution creates digitized
video streams that when transferred via a
computer network, enable remote
monitoring as far away as the network or
the Internet reaches. Frost and Sullivan,
in the same report cited above, predict
that the network camera and video server
markets will continue to grow at around
90% a year through 2005.
4
Remote Monitoring and
Integration are the Future
he potential for remote monitoring
applications is enormous. Uses range
from traditional security surveillance
for offices, retail stores, transportation
hubs, and financial and banking
institutions, but also for the process and
manufacturing industries as well as for
monitoring traffic for both logistical and
security reasons and making traffic
information available on the Internet.
and the increasingly
important biometric
functions are clearly
converging toward a common IP
network that can offer integrated
services.
T
In addition to the increased demand for
“security,” there are a number of other
compelling drivers fueling the adoption of
IP-Surveillance technology:
•
Digital yes, but what’s
it going to cost me?
How to break the
impasse?
For the past 20 years, remote monitoring
and surveillance applications have been
served by analog technology. This
technology, however, has been unable to
satisfy the needs of many applications
because analog CCTV systems are
generally maintenance-intense, don’t offer
remote accessibility, and are notoriously
difficult to integrate with other systems.
Despite these and other obvious
deficiencies, analog’s perceived ease of
use and manageable price point have
made it popular for use within security
markets.
While most companies know the benefits
that digital surveillance technology offers,
they also believe it is not financially
viable to replace old but perfectly good
analog cameras with new digital cameras.
While many users continue to hesitate in
their move to digital, the majority of
industry observers will tell you that the
digital age is unstoppable and soon all
media will be in digital form. In 2002,
many firms find themselves between two
worlds: comfortable with their analog
technology, but attracted to the myriad
advantages of digital technology.
For further information visit www.axis.com
IP-Surveillance enables users to take the
strategic step toward developing a more
open digital surveillance system by
providing solutions for converting analog
images into an easily distributed digital
format — at a manageable level of
investment.
Ultimately, the choice between high
resolution digital images that can be
viewed and stored anywhere in the world
over a computer network vs. lowresolution images with restricted viewing
access and volatile storage media that
deteriorates with age is no choice at all.

CCTV, computers, and other functions
such as fire alarm and access control,
PERFORMANCE AND
BOTTOM-LINE
ADVANTAGES
If these market and technology drivers
are not enough, during 2002 and
beyond, IP-Surveillance’s many
performance advantages combined
with substantial cost savers make for
an even stronger case:
• Lower installation costs and
step-by-step implementation
• Remote accessibility cuts
costs
• Lower maintenance
• Decreasing digital technology
prices
• Capacity for integration
•
Internet and IP Networking
Virtually all businesses, schools and
industries now have a high-speed, IPbased computer network connected to
the Internet. More and more stores
and homes are being connected via
DSL. Banks also use the Internet for
money transactions, providing an
important endorsement to IPSurveillance as a safe and reliable
technology.
2002 and
Beyond
•
Efficiency
Non-security, or
“beyond security” applications can
benefit tremendously from the power
of remote monitoring because it saves
time and money and improves
processes. Digital information and
pictures stored on hard disks make
searching and retrieval much faster
and easier, and associated
maintenance costs are minimized.
An IP-Surveillance system bridges the
gap between the analog and digital
worlds by offering users remote
accessibility, image quality, scalability,
flexibility, and future-proof technology
— all at a reasonable level of investment
and with step-by-step implementation.
xis Communications developed
the first network camera in 1996
and as a global market leader in
network video products, we find
ourselves at the center of the CCTV
security revolution as we leverage our
market leadership to revolutionize
surveillance.
A
The year 2002 marks just the beginning
of the growing importance of widespread
implementation of digital, networked
remote surveillance solutions. The
scalable, flexible nature of this technology
makes it appropriate for the largest
airport, a medium size town center, and
your security environment as well.
The growing convergence of
communication and security technology
offers more and better choices to
upgrade security management
effectiveness. But as we also saw,
perceived implementation complexity
and cost considerations can prevent
some users from making the move to a
digital networked system.
The time to make the switch to digital is
now. The time to upgrade capabilities
and functionality just got easier. Security
can never again be taken for granted and
Axis’ IP-Surveillance will take a leading
role in providing the technology to
assure safer environments where we live,
work, and play.

Network your Paper Documents!
The Power to Securely Communicate Paper-based
Information Across Networks
n the past year, security has
become a top priority
amongst governments,
individuals, and companies, and
much attention has been drawn
to the way we handle and
distribute paper-based
information. These current
security issues, in addition to an
increasing need in organizations
for direct, accurate and fast
communication, make
companies look for new, safe
and efficient ways to
communicate information.
Despite these electronic alternatives,
paper-based information hasn’t gone
away. If anything, it has grown. For
paper-based documents, organizations still
rely on mail and over-night courier or
alternatively fax documents. However,
in today’s fast-paced economy, these
methods can prove unacceptably slow,
expensive, and not versatile and secure
enough for information- and qualitysensitive documents. Preventing unwanted
manipulation, and improving overall
security in handling postage and overnight courier would imply new routines,
different working conditions for mailroom
personnel, and significant investments.
Electronic alternatives to communicate are
already available that address both security
issues as well as the modern business need for
direct and fast communication. E-mail has
become an integral part of many companies
working habits. The benefits of being able to
directly communicate with multiple
individuals, organize and track past e-mails
are instrumental in modern communication.
Network Document Servers propose a
new, safe way to easily communicate and
archive paper-based documents using
existing investments — simply by
e-mailing them over the network.
This method relies on existing e-mail
infrastructure that has already been
invested and secured to protect company
confidential communication.
I
In the past five years, Axis has garnered
much experience in market innovation for
networked document distribution, and
investigated the potential of networked
paper-based documentation. Axis was the
world’s first company to release an IP-based
network document server that automatically
integrates with e-mail servers.
Today, Axis has sophisticated this technology
and is offering two Network Document
Servers, the AXIS 70 and AXIS 7000.
The AXIS 70* is the perfect solution for
convenient document distribution using
e-mail, whereas the AXIS 7000 can be used
to perform document distribution as well as
document archiving.
So what is the best, most secure
and cost-efficient alternative?
Simply put, your paper documents become
corporate network resources that are
available instantly across your organization.
You reduce the cost of paper, streamline
and speed distribution, and make every
important document available to everyone
who needs it, in a secure way using one
common platform — e-mail.
