CJ{adio c§lge $1.50 May 1989 Vol. 16, No. 5 PART I ALLEN B. DUMONT LABORATORIES, INC. PASSAIC, NEW JERSEY By Donald 0. Patterson Allen B. DuMont was born in Brooklyn, New York on January 29, 1901. As a boy, he smashed the head of his drum to find out where the music came from. He owned and operated amateur trans~itting station W2AYR. Later came his graduation from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute of Troy, New York with an Electrical Engineering degree followed by several years with the Westinghouse Lamp Company, first as engineer in the development laboratory, later as engineer in charge of various types of radio receiving tubes. While with Westinghouse, he applied for numerous patents covering tube improvements and tube production equipment One of these patents made tube history as a high speed automatic aging and testing machine operating at a rate of 5000 tubes per hour. For this and other contributions, he was presented with the most outstanding accomplishment of any employee in the Westinghouse organization in 1927. From Westinghouse, DuMont went to the reorganized DeForest Company in 1928 to become Chief Engineer and later as Vice President in charge of all engineering development work and manufacturing. There he found and abandoned plant which had not been operated for over a year. The available equipment was absolute. The DV series of audions had already been superseded by improved tubes during the company's long inactivity. There was no personnel on hand. Nevertheless, within a few months, DuMont had gathered new machinery, trained new personnel and was turning out in excess of 30,000 receiving tubes each day. He developed special equipment to speed up prcxluction and reduce costs, including the improved high speed sealing machine, automatic grid winding and welding machine, high ~ basebranding machine, high speed basing and wire cutting machine, improved weld machine, high speed automatic seasoning and testing n'1achine, and various tube characteristic test sets and life racks. DuMont then turned his attention to transmitting tubes. Soon a complete line of tubes was made available. "Actually, my first close contact with ...Television was in the year 1928 when I was working with DeForest. C. Frances Jenkins in Washington and Baird in England were at that time experimenting with a crude television system that used mechanical scanning discs and which produced a very small indistinct picture composed of 48 lines. The DeForest Company purchased rights from Jenkin's and set up television transmitter W2XCD at Passaic, NJ. We manufactured a small number of television receivers and sold them to amateurs and others who were experimenting with the television system. A great deal of effort was expended in attemtping to develop this system to produce satisfactory pictures but we weren't successful." Indeed realizing the need for cathode ray technique of television, DuMont resigned his post at DeForest in 1931 and went in virtual seclusion. It was in the minds of a number of people that the answer for better television was the cathode ray tube. The greatest obstacle was that tubes available at that time were not only very costly, but extremenly unreliable and the largest only five inches in diameter. The best tubes obtained would last only 100 hours. "We had to produce tubes with large screen sizes that could be made at a reasonable cost and that would last for thousands of hours." The year was 1931. The scene: the basement of DuMont's home in Upper Montclair, New Jersey. "I invested $500 and a very good friend put in another cont'd. on page 5 2 Du Mont at DeForest Tube Plant Early experimental cathode ray tubes in light bulb type envelope. Later Du Mont occupied two small stores at 532 Valley Road, Upper Montclair. With 1500 square feet floor space and 20 employees he was off to 3 vi-vcvtj:? BRlnliS YOU /CDMMABD PERFDRMADCES'' / Int alt tlte wtJt/d:J 9'teat' fl!t:tiAtJ By Frederick Rice During the 1930's, if someone wanted a "State Of The Art" radio and could afford it, he could buy a Scott or McMurdo-Silver radio. If he wanted it with a phonograph, it could be supplied with an outside unit such as a Garrard. He would have a fine "Radio" with phonograph. Also available if you were wealthy was THE CAPEHART which was a deluxe "Phonograph" without radio or with if desired. The Capehart's main selling point was it's turnover record changer. It could play 20 records on one or both sides and intermix 10 and 12 inch records. The Capehart was introduced in 1931 and remained in production until 1949. The last models had 2 speeds and played the new microgroove LPs. In the 1930's the Capehart was suited for the album sets that were available. A Gilbert and Sullivan operetta might have eleven 12 inch records. Whether the set was pressed in manual sequence (1 - 2, 3 - 4, 5 - 6, etc.) or slide automatic sequence (1 - 5, 2 - 6, 3 - 7, etc.), the Capehart could play it without interuption. The slide automatic sequence was actually made for machines like the RCA D-22 whcih reversed the order of it's records. Capehart could play these types in the one side mode without interuption. Capehart furnished a good radio and prior to 1941 sub-contracted them from an outside source just like Scott with their phonograph mechanisms. The radios followed technological development like other sets of the day. The model 500F is one of the more sophisticated designs. Introduced in late 1937 for the 1938 model year, this set featured separate bass and treble controls, automatic frequency control which worked nicely with the optional motorized remote control, and variable bandpass I.F. for "High fidelity" .r:eception. The main feature of the 500 series sets was the tri-amplified audio system. The 500F has separate bass, midrange, and treble amplifiers, each driving it's own speaker; an 18 inch woofer, 14 inch midrange, and a 12 inch tweeter. View with cabinet closed. Each amplifier uses push-pull 6L6Gs driven by a triode-connected 6F6G. The 500F without remote control was priced at $2500. The 400 series which was biamplified, started at $1145. There was a 300 series which had a single amplifier in the $800 range. There had been a 200 series which was dropped by 1939 and replaced by a 100 series in the $500 range. The cheapest Capeharts still cost more than a top of the line Philco or RCAs. Capehart had several exclusive dealers around the country such as John W anamaker' sin Philadelphia (where this 500F was bought), Steinway, Aeolian, and Liberty Music Shops in New York, Lyon & Healy and Bissell-Weisart in Chicago, and Sherman Clay in Portland, Seattle, and San Francisco. Liberty Music Shops was probably the biggest and could do an installation of a 500 instrument for up to $10,000. Such an installation would feature remote control boxes thru-out a home which would allow selection of 6 preset stations, changeover between radio and phonograph, reject, and turn the system on and off from anywhere in the home. A massive relay system was installed in the main machine to allow three speaker systems to be turned on and off in any room. How is the performance of a tri-amplified Capehart? Actually, it is very loud and bassy. The bass amp is rated at 25 watts, and the other two at 15 watts for a total of 55 watts. The Capehart sales brochure states that the fre~ quency response goes from 16 cycles to 13,824 cycles. I don't know how they came up with these numbers. The 18 inch woofer probably doesn't go that far down and the 12 inch tweeter doesn't go above 7500 cycles. Records in the late 1930's weren't recorded above 7500 cycles and the majority of broadcasts did no go above 5000 cycles. The Capehart owner 4 of the 30's didn't mind the lack of highfidelity though. As Fortune Magazine stated in Feb. 41, "What the Capehart owner was buying was prestige, the luxury of staying in his chair while the records changed, and the basic satisfaction of owning something few others in the world may share." The restoration of this 500F was trying at times. The elctronics were rebuilt before I bought the set. All the filters and paper caps had to be replaced. All three driver transformers between the driver rubes and outputs had to be replaced. The drive motor was the biggest headache. The previous owner had it rewound and when I installed it, it ran backwards. I sent it to my rebuilder and he rewound it to run in the correct direction. The first rebuilder did not use the correct amount of blms. My rebuilder copied the blms and the motor would run The marvel that made it famous. hot and stall. I found a fellow who knew these motors and he rewound it a third time. Now that the motor ran, I found the main gear was so bad that it had to be replaced. 10 months later, the set was together and working. It has never broken a record. 1UBE COMPLIMENT OF CAPEHART SOOP Tuner- l-6C5, 2-6H6, 5-6K7, 1-6G5, 1-617, 1-SZA, l-6L7. Bass Amplifier - 2-6C5G, 2-6L6G, l-6N7G, l-6F6G, 1-83. DuMont, continued from page 2 $500 and this was the initial working capital for DuMont Laboratories." Here DuMont set up some second hand tube making machinery. "We had three good men and a fourth worked for us part time. One was a glass blower, one a chemist, and two were technicians." "The development of that first reliable cathode ray tube was pretty much a question of trial and error. Hundreds of experimental envelopes were blown, flourescent coatings applied to the faces and electron guns inserted, one after another. Many ended up in the trash barrel." According to Dr. Thomas T. Goldsmith, Chief of Research, many of these experimental versions were made in a light bulb envelope to save the cost of producing a full size tube. "Nevertheless," DuMont said, "We did develope a practical cathode ray tube that would last several thousand hours utilizing an electron lens for focusing instead of an inert gas." "In our first year of operation, sale of all products of the company amounted to $70. In the next year we raised that up to $1850, and in our fourth year of operation, sold the large amount of $18,000. In those first four years I personnaly had to supplement the initial amount of money invested by putting up an additional $25,000. This money was obtained by loans on my insurance policies, advances from members of my family and loans from friends who had faith in what we were attempting to do. The basement and garage space soon outgrown, DuMont moved his small organization to a store at 532 Valley Road in Upper Montclair. A few more months and a hole was knocked through the wall, taking over the adjacent store. Then another hole and a third store, another hole and another hole until five stores were joined together. But most people in Cincinnati - home of Powel Crosley, Jr. and his Crosley Corp. earlier this century - probably don't know that Crosley appliances aren't antiques nor just a relic from 1940s nostalgia. You can purchase a new, 1989 model Crosley Shelvador. Or a new Crosley self-cleaning electric range, frost-free refirgerator or garbage disposal. Even an '89 Crosley microwave oven. The Crosley Corp., once the proud Cincinnati namesake for WLW radio, appliances and autos, is alive and well - in North Carolina - to the surprise of almost everyone in the Tristate, including the researchers who recently documented Powel Crosley' s life for WCET-TV. Today's new Crosley Corp. is a small, private-label line of modem appliances sold exclusively by a group of independent distributors. (Only 5,000 Crosley products were sold in Ohio last year.) The company also licenses the current Crosley radio replicas sold by Thomas America Corp. "We've got refrigerators, freezers, ranges, dishwashers, washers and driers, air conditioners, microwaves and disposals," says C. E. "Buddy" Dixson, president of the Crosley Corp., based in Winston-Salem, N.C. Dixson and five other independent distributors revived the Crosley label in 1976, after Philco-Ford ceased production of household appliances. Their Brown-Rogers-Dixson Co. acquired the Crosley name from Avco, which had bought the Crosley manufacturing and broadcasting properties in 1946. The new Crosley appliances are manufactured by Magic Chef, Admiral and Ernerson. "We don't say our refrigerator is the same as an Admiral, which it' s not. And we don't say thet're made by Admiral, which they are," says Dixson, a Crosley distributor in the 1950s. Today's Crosley gives independent distributors their own line to sell to smaller "mom and pop" appliance stores, such as Herb & Kramer in Mount Healthy and R. L. Johnson in Aurora, Ind. They're available in 36 states, Ber-muda and Puerto Rico. -- - - "~ ".S:c•> -=-=- - ,\~-~~ -- ~ Crosley's marketing strategy has been directed at dealers through trade publications. The company decided not to buy advertising seen by the general public because people can't easily find the products. That's precisely the case in Cincinnati. "The weakest part we've got should be our strongest - and that's Cincinnati," says Dixson, who plans to hold his national Crosley distributors convention here this summer. M.A.S. Inc., the Cleveland-area finn that controls Crosley's Ohio distribution, plans to open a Crosley warehouse here this spring. [ crosI _ e~ ] ® . was kind of a laughter," says Greg Wulfekotter, M.A.S. regional sales manager for Greater Cincinnati. "But for some reason, it's begining to take off here." Crosley's new success has come from customers who had owned a Crosley years ago - "the mature consumer," in Wulfekotter's words. "The people who were born before World War II knew Crosley well," Dixon says. "The people born after World War II don't know what Crosley was. So we've had to do a lot ofre-educating. It's been a real challenge for us." Crosley's 10-year limited warranty on all appliances - "the best in the business" - also appeals to buyers, Dixon says. To small, independent appliance dealers, having a unique brand of merchandise, such as crosley, is appealing. They have something that can't be offered by Swallen's, Steinberg's and Sears. "We've made a commitment to the smaller dealers not to move the Crosley brand to the big dealers," Wulfekotter says. Dixson says that he did "$100 million in retail sales in Crosley-branded merchandise" last year. M.A.S. sold 5,000 Crosley units throughout Ohio in 1988 - more than tripling its business from a year ago. It's the fastest-growing line carried by M.A.S., surpassing the company's annual growth of Sharp electronic products and Speed Queen laundry machines last year, says Harry Steller, M.A.S. president. "In "89, I expect (my) Crosley sales to double. You're talking about giant growth" in Ohio, Steller says. Dixson says his Crosley Corp. still receives letters from satisfied original customers from the 1940s. "We still get a letter, one or two a month, saying 'My Crosley.is still working. And we've never had a service call.' The Crosley name is a good name," Dixson says. 6 7 NEW FOR 1989! • DECALS - Emerson, Zenith, Atwater Kent, and Stewart Warner" • ELECTRONIC BALLAST- Replace resistance cords, tubes, etc. • SOLID STATE VIBRATORS.:._ 6-12 volt, 3 and 4 pin for auto radios • WOOD KNOBS - Late 20's style repro knobs with metal insert and set-screw • BROWN f>LASTIC KNOBS - N.O.S. brown knobs for 30's-40's radios • CLOTH COVERED WIRE- Custom manufactured 20 AWG hookup wire in 5 colors ~ ~~~~ p~~R'sii_..,,_«i...l.l"..,.i s··""°"·s~~"""'~''"•"°. . • BOOKS - 65 titles available, including "'*"'' E!> · .,,., all the latest ..,,,, /; ~.;15~ 1E-•1.;>{. s, • ~·ze>N" Write or call for new 24 page wholesale catalog.
