ANNUAL REPORT -- IT’S NOT JUST NUMBERS
Many organizations feel they are too small and don’t need an annual report.
Without an annual report, however, you are losing opportunities to increase
your donors and revenue. Done correctly, an annual report can be a
powerful marketing tool.
Some of the things an annual report can achieve for your organization are:

Recognize and retain current donors;

Upgrade donors to a higher level of giving;

Acquire new donors;

Position your organization as well-managed;

Entice new attendees for your special events.
Yes, your annual report needs to include your Income and Expense Statement and Balance Sheet as of
your fiscal year-end, but that’s just the starting point.
WHAT SHOULD GO IN YOUR ANNUAL REPORT?
1. First, the CEO should present a summary of the year’s achievements. Plan to distribute your annual
reports via email and include a copy on your website. Since these are electronic versions, provide
the summary via a link to a short video of the CEO talking about the year’s achievements. This will be
far more powerful than a written summary.
2. Unless a donor has asked to remain anonymous, include your donors’ names in the report. Donors
like to see their names in print. Establish giving levels and report the names alphabetically within
each level. For example, a donor who makes a gift of $1,000 or more for the year will be listed in
the Benefactor’s Circle; a $500 - $999 gift will be listed in the Diamond Donor section; a $250 - $499
gifts will be listed in the Gold Donor section. This often entices donors to give a larger gift the
following year to move up to the next level.
3. If more than 80 cents of each dollar goes to fund your programs (rather than administrative and
fundraising costs), include that information with your financial statements. Strong financial statements
show that your organization is well-managed and fiscally responsible, and this can entice new donors
to make a gift.
4. Hire a professional photographer to capture fantastic photos as your special event. Then use those
photos not just for press releases about your event, but include some in your annual report to entice
new attendees next year.
5. Finally, include a very short (under-30-second) video clip of someone you’ve served during the year
sharing a success story that your organization made possible, or a testimony from a major donor
sharing why your organization is so important to them.
All of these tips will spice up your annual report and, hopefully, bring in new and larger donors.

NO MORE SILENCE ... IT’S TIME TO TALK
PARTICIPATE IN THE
The Red Flag Campaign uses a bystander intervention strategy to address and prevent sexual assault, dating violence and
stalking on college campuses. The campaign encourages friends and other campus community members to say something
when they see warning signs (“red flags”) for sexual assault, dating violence or stalking in a friend’s relationship.
Did You Know?
-- Research indicates that in 1 in 5 college students experience dating violence.
-- 1 out of every 3 teen relationships is abusive.
-- Females between the ages of 16 and 24 are roughly 3 times more likely than the rest of the population to be abused by an
intimate partner.
