ELECTRICAL FLASH BURN PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT BULL #38 DOCUMENT: 4301-06-328 REVISION DATE: 5/17/11 PAGE: 1 OF 1 ELECTRICAL FLASH BURN PROTECTIVE EQUIPMENT PURPOSE: To define when arc flash protective clothing and/or equipment shall be worn. PROCEDURE: 1. Arc flash protective clothing and/or arc flash suit, and heliarc welding gloves shall be worn when: B. A door is opened to a switchgear cubicle in which there are exposed energized parts above 240 volts. C. Testing or troubleshooting 480 volt motor starters or breakers while the breaker is energized, even though they do not have to be inserted or withdrawn from the switchgear with the door open. 2. Arc flash protective clothing and/or arc flash suit and voltage rated gloves shall be worn when pulling energized fuses at 2400 volts and above (using a hotstick). 3. Arc flash clothing and/or equipment is not required when: A. Viewing the internals of a motor starter if there are no exposed energized parts and all possible points have been tested and deemed de-energized. B. Using the normal operating handles to open or close a 480V motor starter breaker. C. Operating 240V and below circuit breakers. WARNING: Welding gloves shall only be used on de-energized equipment. If it is possible for the equipment to become energized, voltage rated gloves with leather protectors shall be worn. Note: NFPA 70E should be consulted when performing any electrical work. If a task does not appear in this bulletin, NFPA 70E must be consulted for the proper PPE requirements.
