No. 7 FROM YOUR PRESIDENT... DAVE LOUCKS Within a month, many of us will be gathered in Eau Claire for the 1987 World Tournament. A new record for registration has been set, surpassing the previous mark of 1215 set in 1981 at Genola, Minnesota. As I write this, 1250 pitchers have registered with one more day to count. The Eau Claire Tournament will be indoors as was the previous record setter. Normally an ice rink, the Hobbs Arena will house a total of 32 courts, 16 in each of two buildings with all concessions and activities out of the sun and unaffected by changing weather conditions. While not the first indoor World Tournament, Eau Claire may set a trend for the future. The 1988 tournament scheduled for Pleasanton, California will also be out of the sun. While not completely indoors, the Pleasanton event will be under cover in a 200 x 200 covered arena holding 32 courts. The NHPA is encouraging all future W.T. bidders to do their utmost to provide covered courts. In May, I had the opportunity to visit with John Davis, President of Sports Enterprises and view the building that is planned to become the first Horseshoe Palladium. It is a very impressive structure of 120,000 square feet that offers a great deal of potential for the benefit of our sport. Any project of this magnitude takes a great deal of planning and a lot of patience. John and his staff have given both and now, only a few hurdles remain to be cleared. A long time dream is getting closer to becoming a reality. Congratulations to Jim Knisley, Don Koso and Ed Domey. These 3 gentlemen and supporters of our sport will be honored as the 1987 inductees into the NHPA Hall of Fame. Their respective categories-are; Player, Organizer and, Player/Organizer. Also selected to the Hall of Fame in the Player/Organizer category was Joe Dubie of Georgia. Unfortunately, Joe passed away several years ago and we have been unable to locate any immediate family. Some Georgia members are assisting us but, if anyone out there may have some information, please contact Donnie Roberts or Hall of Fame Chairman, Barry Chapelle. THOUSAND TRAILS HORSESHOES By DONNIE ROBERTS Thousand Trails has Preserves all over the United States. 94,000 families are members of Thousand Trails. Each Preserve has horseshoe courts. Last year horseshoe competition was held at each Preserve. Again in 1987, competition will be held at each Preserve. A few months ago George Lanegraff, TT National Recreation Director, contacted me by phone to ask for assistance with the 1987 events. I asked for and was granted permission by Dave Loucks to coordinate the NHPA effort to assist Thousand Trails. I attended a meeting with George, who flew in from Washington state, at the Wilmington, Ohio Preserve on May 16. We had four hours of meetings and demonstrations. We laid the 4 The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/July, 1987 MESSAGE—(Continued) groundwork for a very successful TT Horseshoe Program nationwide on August 15 & 16, 1987. In order to accomplish this task of staging a horseshoe event at every Preserve nationwide on the same date, I will need your help. I need a horseshoe club or some of its members to adopt the Preserve in your area. You will then go meet with the Thousand Trails staff and plans will be made for the event. I will contact the pitchers in the area of each Preserve by mail and/or phone. This is a lovely opportunity to expose our sport and our association to 94,000 families. With your help, I am confident we can accomplish this task. If you are near a TT Preserve, and want to call me to volunteer to adopt a Preserve, that would be great. We must work hard together on this one. NHPA CALENDAR by DONNIE ROBERTS A couple of months ago, Dave Loucks gave me permission to work on an NHPA Calendar for 1988. A complete ad on the product was published in the May issue of the NHPA News Digest. We deliberately kept the cost down because we felt the promotion was more important than a big profit to the NHPA. Orders have started coming in. These calendars make great gifts and would be nice prizes for leagues or tournaments. At least every horseshoe pitcher should have one on his wall. Check the ad in this issue to order. In this calendar, we will have many horseshoe pictures. In addition to the pictures we will list horseshoe events in 1988. So, I need your help. I need a complete list of all your 1988 tournaments or other events. We plan to list every known horseshoe event in 1988 on the pages of this calendar. Also, if you have a photo that might be used, send it in. This information must be mailed to me by July 1, 1987. If you want your 1988 events listed in the 1988 NHPA Calendar, the responsibility is yours to get the list to me very soon. NEWS AND NOTES FROM SPORTS ENTERPRISES May has been a very busy month. A detail month of all the many projects we're working on in an effort to finalize our purchasing of the property, zoning modifications, our clay project, noise improvements in the stake covers, etc. All of us at Sports Enterprises, Inc. were very pleased to have our N.H.P.A. president, Dave Loucks, visit us for a few days to get first hand knowledge of what we are really doing. We certainly appreciated his opinions and comments on the future of our sport. Also our good friends, Mr. & Mrs. Ellis Cobb, dropped by for a nice visit. We're sure they have a much better understanding of Sports Enterprises, Inc. now. Another friend, Mr. & Mrs. Ferd Guenther of Nebraska, dropped in and really surprised us. It is very nice when horseshoe pitchers from all over the country drop by and have a bit with us and see what a beautiful part of the country we are located in. Everything is going well, but never seems to be going fast enough. Any of you who would like to visit and get involved in the project please do so. You will not be disappointed. 1987 WORLD TOURNAMENT TELEPHONE NUMBER 715-835-2600 The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/July, 1987 IF YOUR NAME IS MARK OR WALTER RAY OR CARL OR KEVIN OR JIM, DON'T READ THIS . . . The people above aren't human but you and I are. And we need help. Every once in a while on of the people above will give us a little tip like CONCENTRATE, LET ALL THE AIR OUT OF YOUR LUNGS FIRST, STEP THIS WAY, STEP THAT WAY, RELAX! By the time we have run all this through our minds it's a wonder we can throw the shoe at all. Now listen up all you 20, 30, 40, 50, and even 60 percent pitchers, here's a method (not a tip) that I sincerely believe will give you almost immediate improvement and you'll start to see your percentage rise. Get yourself a study of score sheets, the same kind they record your score on at tournaments. Take this pad out to your courts, right by yourself with no one to distract you. Throw about 30 shoes to loosen up and then start marking your score. Put down the usual X for the ringers but quit using the dash for the missed shoe. Instead, use the following code: S for short, R for right, L for left, O for over, N for not open. Sometimes a missed show may be a combination of two faults, record them both if you wish. Do this for a full one hundred shoes. Now get yourself a cool lemonade or something, sit down and total up each X, S, R, L, O, and N. STUDY it and find your WORST fault. Now put down that lemonade and let's get back to work. Flip to a fresh scoresheet, throw about 10 or 12 shoes to loosen up and start another hundred shoes. The only difference is, we are going to work on our worst fault. If it was short shoes for instance, we are going to determine ourselves that we will not throw any short this time. After you've finished, tally up your marks again and see the difference. Date your scoresheets and keep them as your reference. Do this twice a week, more if you wish, but always work, and I mean WORK, on your most current fault that comes up more frequently. I feel sure that you're going to start seeing more and more Xs. THOSE NHPA WOMEN . . . by GLEN PORTT The fight for the Women's 1987 World Horseshoe Championship should give spectators the best pitching ever. . . even better than the '85 event. . . when the top six averaged 80.9%. Why? Because the contestants will have no rain, dust, heat, ro wind with which to contend. Under these ideal conditions, new records could be established. Will Phyllis Negaard's world record 84.1% for an 11 game event fall? If so, who has the best chance to topple it? Looking at the stats for the past three years, two women at the top of my list are Debbie Michaud . . . and Phyllis Negaard herself. Debbie, who won the world title in '77 with a flip shoe, astounded the horseshoe pitching world by changing to a 1 V* turn after the '84 event . . . and winning the 1985 title with 82.8%. In '86, she came back with a near record 83.1, placing second. The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/July, 1987 NHPA WOMEN — Continued Who will win the World title? With the amazing number of women who can thro 80% or better in any one game . . . and knock off their opponent... the championship is up for grabs. Although Negaard and Michaud would have to be the favorites based upon past stats, not one of the following can be counted o u t . . . 10 times world champion Vickie Winston . . . 5 times world champion Ruth Hangen, who proved she still has what it takes with a 79.9% in the '85 event . . . '84 world champion Tari Powell . . . Debbie Pickeing and Fran Carnahan. How about Sharon Paddock, the ace from the West? Yest, definitely. The '86 event was Sharon's first taste of world competition. This was her seasoning. With a very credible 4th place finish and a 76.6% ringer average, she could do even better in the '87 shoot out. No, I'm not forgetting Quebecoise Diane Cantin. Diane pitched in the '85 event. . . her first W.T. competition . . . finished second and walked away with the second highest tournament average ever. . . 83.3%. Could she win it? Yes . . . just as any of the others can. The '87 even should be a real dog fight. Whoops! I really meant to s a y . . . a real ladies fight. . . and may the best one win. WORLD TOURNAMENT JUDGING INFORMATION by LORI OBERBILLIG "It's a Ringer!" Don't we wish that the judge's would always agree with that decision. If they did, there would be no need for judges. But this is not the case, we do need additional judges as Eau Claire and the N.H.P.A., expects the World Tournament to be the largest ever. The judges will be given the Tournament Rules of Play and Judges Guideline to review. Also judges shirts will be furnished compliments of the N.H.P.A. A white tee or undershirt must be worn underneath shirt. You are also required to wear BLACK or WHITE slacks or shorts. NO short shorts or other colors, please. If you are interested in participating in this program, information will be sent to you by contracting—Lori Oberbillig, Judge Chairperson, Box 69, Chawick, IL 61014. HALL OF FAME COMMITTEE REPORT by BARRY CHAPPELLE CONGRATULATIONS to our 1987 NHPA Hall of Fame inductees. They are as follows: PLAYER - Jim Knisley ORGANIZER - Don Koso PLAYER-ORGANIZER - Ed Domey PLAYER-ORGANIZER - Joe Dubie They will be inducted into the NHPA Hall of Fame at the 1987 World Tournament Awards Banquet at Eau Claire, Wisconsin. So that you can get to know them better, we will run biographical features on each of these gentlemen in future issues of the News Digest. Also, we will run more information on the Hall of Fame, listing those names now in nomination and the requirements and procedures for nominating Hall of Fame candidates. The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/July, 1987 EDITOR EXPRESSES HIS THANKS It is with humility that I express my sincere thanks to all the wonderful pitchers and friends from all over the United States and Canada, for the many nice cards and messages that I received on the completion of 32 years as editor of the News Digest. It is truly a labor of love. I hope to be of service to the NHPA for sometime to come. Sincerely, F. YOUR ASSISTANCE PLEASE By DONNIE ROBERTS We have an NHPA member in Michigan who must switch from his right hand to his left to pitch horseshoe. This was caused by a severe injury to the rotator cup in his right arm. If one of you has made a similar switch or if you have any expert advice for him, please drop a note to: Dick Steho, 1134 Brookshire Dr., Lapeer, Michigan 48446. Your efforts will be appreciated. 10 The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/July, 1987 In Memoriam MILDRED HALL, age 82, wife of Ernie Hall, long-time member of Northern California H.P.A.; sister of Barak Wright, progressive leader of the Ukiah, California Horseshoe Club. HIX, SPRINGER, AND NORTH CAROLINA By DONNIE ROBERTS (See cover picture) The 1987 North Carolina Dogwood Festival Horseshoe Tournament held April 11 was a very good event. We had good weather and many players. The event was held on the Jack Springer Memorial Courts. They are so named as a result of the many years of hard work performed by Jack Springer in Statesville plus his devotion to North Carolina horseshoe. Front row: left to right: Eugene Hix, Kara Hix, Thomas Hix, Charlene Hix and Karl Hix. Back row: left to right: Rene Hix Cowan, David Cowan, Sonya Hix, Floyd Hix, Ruth Hix, Tonya Hix and Jack Springer. Jack Springer presented a plaque to the Hix family of Ruther Glen, Virginia. This was the 19th annual Dogwood event. The plaque was presented in recognition that the Hix family has attended all 19 events in Statesville. A very impressive record of attendance. One of the great things about horseshoe pitching is that it is a family sport. Floyd Hix and his family are a perfect example of how horseshoe pitching can influence family life and provide healthy recreation. Two ringers six to the Hix family, Jack Springer, and the North Carolina Horseshoe program. ' The Horseshoe Pitcher News Digest/July, 1987 " F r o m Out Of The Mail Bag" Editor, Horseshoe Pitchers Digest National Horseshoe Pitchers Association P.O. Box 1606 Aurora, IL 60507 Dear Mr. Cobb, The members of the Washington State Horseshoe Pitchers Association have reviewed the proposed Constitution and By-Law changes as printed in the April issue of the Digest and find four particularly disturbing. Item 14 — Thirty foot pitchers restricted from competing with those pitching 40 feet. At the majority of our tournaments there are not enough 30 foot pitchers to make up a separate class or classes. If passed, this change will effectively exclude the ladies and seniors from participating. This seems a rather odd approach for a sport that is trying to improve its image. We will not accept this. Item 19 — All members would be required to belong to the State and National Association and subscribe to the Digest. There are an adequate number of us in Washington who subscribe to the National Digest to insure that printed news of importance is disseminated to the State membership. We have many members who pitch only on a local level and support the State Association, but are not inclined to join National. This change also would eliminate our State Associate memberships. Item 26 — All tournament play would be required to be carried out on clay. There are over three hundred pits in Washington that are now used for tournament competition with only four having a clay surface. We can annually expect up to 140 inches of rainfall in some parts of the state, making it impossible to maintain a clay court. It is not physically or financially possible to convert our sand pits to clay. Item 27 — The count-all point system will be mandatory. If national and/or regional tournaments wish to score in this manner, then so be it. Let those who compete at a much less regimented level continue to compete and score as they choose. In other words, leave the scoring option open to our tournament directors. Let us not make the mistake of regulating our sport to the point that it will discourage the average pitcher from joining and enjoying good old fashioned competition. Sincerely, Mike Thorniley, President Washington State Horseshoe Pitchers Association Rte. 1 Box 83P Poca, WV 25159 Dear Mr. Cobb: I tried to settle my shirt problem quietly. I know most of the executive council and dress code committee personally. I knew they had never seen me pitch in sleeves. I do not, and have never pitched in tank tops. After the 1986 world tournament, I wrote two letters and one during the tournament requesting that each member of the executive council and dress code committee read and reconsider my position. The only reason I was given at the 1986 tournament was "Someone" had heard a comment about my shirts. Comments? If we listen to the comments there wouldn't be anyone in sports from the executives down to the players. I was told that the dress code was published in the News Digest and knew I couldn't pitch in sleeveless shirts. Not every pitcher takes the News Digest. Yes, I read it in the Digest but shouldn't it have been 12 The Horseshoe Pitcher News Digest/July, 1987 MAILBAG — Continued brought up and read to the convention delegates before being enforced. My thinking was wrong! As a member and a delegate of the NHPA, I am requesting that the dress code be read and voted on at the 1987 convention also explain the part that states . . . A person's dress lend to all participants' enjoyment of the game. "I haven't figured that statement out yet, but I'm still working on it." Wasn't I a participant? The tennis shorts with or without socks is "good." I only wish I could pitch in shorts and tennis shoes. I know they are comfortable but so are my sleeveless shirts. I will not be at the 1987 tournament or convention. They won't allow me to pitch in my shirts! Would the delegates and members, please, support me in trying to get the dress code changed. I have no other alternative, but to fight for my rights. Ralph Maddox Dear Mr. Cobb, I think I am one of a very large percentage of people who do not write letters to editors. But I must write now to applaud the letter from K.W. Henry of Helena, MT which appeared in the May '87 issue of the NHPA News Digest. His letter was accurate and described and expressed the opinions of many, many pitchers. There is NO logical reason why women should pitch from 30' in competition with men. I could to on and on, but this letter said it all. It should be read at the annual meeting. And the rule should be changed!! Sincerely, Charles L. Jones West Middlesex, PA Dear Mr. Cobb, What in the world is the NHPA going to come up with next? First, it was a 30 second shoe delivery rule to get rid of one of its best pitchers, Harold Reno. Next, it was a "no smoking" rule aimed at world champion, Dale Lipovsky, and attached to that was "no chewing" tobacco rule aimed at Alvin Perry, and now the "no sleeves" rule for Ralph Maddox. Ralph has always entered tournaments neat and clean, as it should be, and I see nothing wrong with exposing one's armpits to spectators. It is done all the time in other sports. I think this issue should be brought to the floor of the convention and let the membership decide how we should dress, as was done with the 30 second rule, and the no smoking or chewing tobacco rule. Yours truly, Howard "Buck" Mann 117 Goheen St. Fairlea, WV 24902 Dear Mr. Cobb, This letter is a response to K.W. Henry's letter in the May issue of the Digest. One of the goals of NHPA has been to increase membership & public awareness of our sport; they have worked diligently on this. One of the areas being our youth. I witnessed at a fun tournment two Juniors who showed an avid interest in pitching. No other Juniors being available, they were allowed to pitch in a men's division at 30 feet. Grown men (I use the term loosely) harassed these two youngsters with insults. Needless to say, those Juniors' pitching careers were shortlived. To the other end of the scale—our Senior pitchers. They have earned, if nothing else, our respect. They have lived long hard lives and many no longer have the strength and stamina they once had. The reward in The Horseshoe Pitcher's News Digest/July, 1987 MAILBAG — Continued the sunset of their years: 'Find some other fellows your age, form your own division, pitch at 30 feet.' Between the Juniors and the Seniors come the women. Mr. Henry, your description of "these poor, pathetic, deluded creatures," I found very offensive! Your remarks concerning changing the poker & shuffleboard rules for women were absurd! Brute strength comes to mind when we talk of throwing a piece of iron any given distance. Few women have developed powerful biceps, triceps or pectorals. If they had more of these masculine traits, they would have the power and strength needed to "sling iron" with the best of them! You state that "these poor pathetic creatures would really scream if they were awarded trophies that were 25% smaller than the men's trophies." Take a look at the 1987 World Tournament prize money on page 12 of the Mag Digest. I have been Idaho's State Secretary for 4 years and have worked hard in drafting and making a Constitution and By-laws a reality, in increased awareness and appreciation of sanctioned events and established percentages. I hae spent hours year around working on endless details. My blood pressure does have a tendency to rise, when its okay to do the work, but not to participate in the sport! I have been an avid horseshoe pitcher, but there are only 9 or 10 women pitchers statewide. With percentages from 10% to 59%, it is impossible to have a division of women at any given tournament. I have listened to the grumbling of many disgruntled men, to the point my enthusiasm for the game has waned considerably. Don't get me wrong, I still love the game, but I will not beg any of you to play. You spent your winter in Florida only to have fun in the sun turn sour because of a couple of defeats you suffered at the hand of ladies in a couple of games. It was a game, which Webster defines as recreation, amusement, play. It is a sport and a person who participates becomes a Sportsman, which Webster defines as a person who can take loss or defeat without complaint; victory without gloating. Several of you need to review these words and their meanings and to realize this is a game, for fun; a sport, something we should all be able to participate in and enjoy! Helen Payton Idaho State Secretary Jerome, Idaho Dear Ellis: I was very disturbed about all of the fuss over the dress code at the W.T. I think that they should be ashamed to pick out one man and make an issue about it. Ralph Maddox is a credit to the game and I believe that Ralph has an apology coming from those who started the fuss over the dress code. Sincerely, Leo McGrath Cincinnati, OH ( GORDON D.S. MED. Ledger) There were 461 students, 207 girls and 254 boys, at Fairfield Junior High who participated in a horseshoe pitching course May 11-29. The program was scheduled and supervised by the school's two physical education instructors, Ron Hunerdosse and Nancy Rolston, and taught by Fairfield pitchers Bill Vande- griff 4 and Lindley Bissig. The three-week course consisted of four 30-minute classes on Monday, Wednesday and Friday, and five 30-minute classes on Tuesday and Thursday. The basic fundamentals of horseshoe pitching, different methods and styles of pitching, and system of scoring were presented to each class. The two sets of clay courts at the school and two sets of portable courts were used. Each group was involved for two 30-minute periods, using both the clay and portable courts. Sixteen players (four per court), using eight pairs of horseshoes, could compete during each class with everyone stationed at one end to start. Two players from each court pitched one way, and after they finished, the entire group moved to the opposite court. Then the other two from each court pitched the other way, competing against each other individually or as partners. This method created competition and avoided injury to the studenst. "Lots of enthusiasm was expressed during the sessions," said Vandegriff, when students scored a point (shoe within six inches of the stake), a ringer (three points) or a double ringer (six points). The count-all system of scoring was used to increase interest. CARTER WINS ST. LOUIS, MO. SPRING OPEN — SANC. 87-036 CLASS A — S Carter, 7-0-71.6; J. Carmack, 6-1 -69.6; S. Hrabovsky, 4-3-51.8; M. Due to the miscalculation of the results of that tournament by the tournament director his average was sent in as being 64.2 instead of 68.5. Paul states that at 70 years, he does not expect to ever have a record of 6-0-68.5 again. HOUCIN WINS FUN N' SUN HCP OPEN AT CLEARWATER FLORIDA — MAY 2 — SANC. 05-87-044 GROUP 1 — M.
