POCKET PREVIEW AUTUMN YEARLINGS Friday, September 18, 2015 Featuring the Tattersalls Ireland September, Go Orby and Tattersalls October sales Buyers’ Q& A 2 Friday, September 18, 2015 racingpost.com W ELCOME to the second of our 2015 yearling sales guides, covering everything you need to know about the upcoming Tattersalls Ireland, Goffs and Tattersalls auctions. In the following pages you will find consignor and buyer features nestled among sales news and statistics, including the all-important pinhooking tables. Fairyhouse serves as a fine starting point for the autumn sales trail and Tattersalls Ireland has again put together a catalogue that looks sure to offer buyers value for money. After a short breather the show rolls on to Goffs, where a large selection of blue-chip yearlings boasts among its number six by the mighty Frankel, whose first crop are also represented by 18 lots at Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale. However, dual world champion Frankel is the new kid on the block this season – a role also filled by Guy O’Callaghan’s Grangemore Stud, which in a short period has risen up the vendor ranks and enjoyed a red-letter sale at DBS last month. More seasoned operators Mark Weinfeld of Meon Valley Stud, Philipp Stauffenberg and Mountarmstrong Stud manager Robert Tierney also discuss their drafts, while Sam Hoskins and Luke Lillingston reflect on a stellar season for Kennet Valley Thoroughbreds, including Magical Memory’s valuable victory in the Stewards’ Cup. That said, many of the trainers I buy for are buying ‘on spec’. These horses then have to be sold on to clients. If the client doesn’t like a sire or isn’t familiar with him, it puts you on the back foot from the get-go. Rightly or wrongly, it’s far easier to sell an ugly duckling by a fashionable sire than trying to sell a beautiful specimen who is by a perceived dud! Yes, because nobody can see inside their heart or their mind. The yearling must look like an athlete and have a good attitude. Yes, absolutely. Amanda Skiffington bought me three at Tattersalls Ireland last year – Galileo Gold, Hawksmoor, and They Seek Him Here. Being by Paco Boy, Azamour and Elusive Pimpernel, they aren’t at the peak of fashion. Azamour is dead but the other two will only get more fashionable if my two horses are anything to go by. I think W value can be found if you look for the progeny of stallions who aren’t yet fashionable. If a horse pulls out and stands over at the knee the only reason I don’t put them straight back in the box is out of politeness to the vendor. To me it screams of a horse being slow and unathletic. I don’t mind a horse being back at the knee, as long as it isn’t too pronounced. With it being a renowned trait of Danehill, we see plenty of it here in Europe through his sons and daughters. They’re often good-actioned horses who go well on fast ground. No, not for breezing as they don’t improve. They may be good racehorses in the long-term but won’t improve physically within six months before the breeze-up sales. I’m prepared to forgive all faults in moderation provided the horse is athletic and moves through those faults. This is price-dependent. I try to look at the majority of horses in a sale as I have a wide variety of clients and I have to try to cut my cloth to fit their needs. Pedigrees are forever changing and I wouldn’t let an absence of black type under the first two dams stop me buying a horse if I saw other angles I liked. Yes. If they look like an athlete they may be able to run. If you can hit on a stallion at the beginning of his career – when a lot of their progeny won’t be all bred in the purple – it can be very successful. I bought Fleeting Spirit from Invincible Spirit’s second crop for very small money and she was a superstar from the beginning. She was European champion sprinter and won almost £700,000 in prize-money. Yes. Pedigrees are movable feasts. Galileo Gold fell into this category and his dam’s half-brother Goldream is now a Group 1 winner. In the case of a young family like this you can take a chance if you like the individual. I might be put off if both dams had a dozen foals without a good one though. I’d want to know the background of a vendor but yes, if everything added up, I would buy from an unfamiliar vendor. Yes. I don’t care where the horse comes from. Last year I bought First Selection at a Spanish sale and he won the Solario Stakes last month, his fourth win as a two-year-old. Of course. We’re trying to buy racehorses, not fashion labels. That said, there are some famous nurseries that consistently produce good stock with excellent bone and who are beautifully prepared for sale. Definitely. The horse may have a low pinhook Bloodstock Pocket Post Friday, September 18, 2015 Buyers’ Q& A 3 Our expert panel (top to bottom): agent Alex Elliott, consignor Con Marnane and trainer Hugo Palmer price due to the fact they were badly done as a foal and have since been in the care of a good horseman and on good land. There may also have been a pedigree update since the yearling was bought as a foal. CM Yes. We buy for ourselves, so value for money is always a big consideration. The cheaper they come the better I like it, provided we like the horse. HP I’m often put off by a high pinhook price. If someone’s paid more than my budget a year ago I get a bit disheartened by my chances. Horses can improve so much in a year that I’d never be put off if they were very cheap then if I loved them now – Short Squeeze has been a star for us, I paid 30,000gns for him and he cost his vendor a mere €6,000. Plus, what’s the one thing you would never forgive in an individual? AE Temperament. Horses are extremely resilient and they are forever overcoming their lack of pedigree and conformational faults. However, the one thing I can’t stomach is a horse with no mind. Rather like mercurial sports stars, they will let you down time and time again. I’m also loath to buy a horse who’s light of bone. I always feel if you buy one you’re asking for trouble before you start. They must have enough bone underneath them to support their body mass. CM There’s not much I wouldn’t forgive provided the horse looks like an athlete with a good attitude. We bought Listed winner Robin Of Navan for €10,000. He had a fractured tooth at the yearling sale and our dentist John Halligan extracted it and sorted out all the infection and the horse has never looked back. HP I struggle to like horses who aren’t athletic or who look to me like they’ll be hard to keep sound – the only winners then are the vets! We’ve been very happy with him since we bought him and he’s been very straightforward.” D BARODA and Colbinstown Studs return to the September Sale with a Dream Ahead half-brother (below, lot 68) to last year’s second-top lot, Caribbean Spring. The son of Dark Angel, bought by Bobby O’Ryan and Dermot Weld for 110,000, is out of Bogini, a daughter of Holy Roman mperor from the family of Dandy Man and Anthem Alexander. This year the young operation is hoping Caribbean Spring’s half-brother will attract plenty of interest at Fairyhouse. Colbinstown Stud’s Dave Myerscough says: “Dream Ahead is off to a flyer and he has a very exciting horse in Jessica Harrington’s Final Frontier. “Hopefully people will latch on to that and the colt will sell well.” op ot COOLMORE sire Fastnet Rock and the late Azamour are two sires who have been well represented on course by Oaks-winning daughters this season, and both have just one filly on offer at Fairyhouse this month. A relative bargain at €52,000 when snapped up by Peter and Ross Doyle in 2011, he has proven tough and reliable across four seasons for owner John Manley – and added a first Group 1 to his CV in this year’s Coronation Cup. Last year the sale was represented by Group 1 Prix Morny winner The Wow Signal and has again lined up a selection of sharp-looking two-year-old types mixed with later developers, including numerous lots by two-year-old king Kodiac and young guns Zebedee and Zoffany, to a daughter of High Chaparral and a pair of Sea The Stars colts. The Wow Signal and fellow Group 1-winning graduate Lethal Force were plucked from the first crop offered by their sires and there is no shortage of recent additions to the stallion ranks represented at Fairyhouse, including 19 (plus another seven in Part II) by Sir Prancealot, and six lots (two more in Part II) by Classic winner Power. The catalogue is a weighty one – with 471 lots set for the main event and a further 235 catalogued for Part II – but year after year it pays dividends to those who take time to analyse its contents thoroughly. re to ra atte t o to re ’ a Coolmore’s Curragh queen (lot 309) and the stud’s Joe Hernon is pleased with her progress. “She’s taking her prep fantastically,” he says. “She’s very eyecatching, a beauty, by a sire who’s doing very well this year, particularly with his fillies.” A half-sister to three winners, the filly is out of Listed runner-up Mystic Mile from the family of high-class sprinter and sire College Chapel. The loss of Gilltown Stud resident Azamour has been keenly felt this season following the Irish Oaks victory of Covert Love – narrowly denied a top level follow-up in the Yorkshire Oaks last month – whose trainer Hugo Palmer also sent out the sire’s Prestige Stakes winner Hawksmoor. A sole filly from the penultimate crop by the sire, lot 180 (right), can be found in the Ballybin Stud draft. “We’re very happy with her,” says the stud’s Paddy Kelly. “She’s been with us about three months now and is very easy to do. She’s a nice, correct filly.” A second foal, she is out of the winning Green Desert mare Frivolous – whose dam Sweet Folly is a ter Group 3-winning half-sister to Coronation Stakes winner Kissing Cousin. His three initial offerings were headed by decent juvenile and Chelmsford track record-holder Field Of Vision. This year O’Callaghan returns to Tattersalls Ireland with a team of four colts made up of sons of Dragon Pulse, Lilbourne Lad, Mastercraftsman and US sire Spring At Last. “They’re a good, solid bunch and hopefully they’ll be popular,” says O’Callaghan. two-year-old types in America where he has sired plenty of stakes winners,” says O’Callaghan. “This horse came from Keeneland and he looks a nice two-year-old type with a bit of scope too.” Pride of place from last year’s initial yearling offering at Grangemore belongs to Richard Fahey’s classy two-year-old Birchwood, who leapt to the front rank of his generation when winning in Group 2 company at Newmarket’s July festival. This continued Grangemore’s rich tradition of producing high-calibre Flat runners. Previous representatives to have been bred and raised on the Kildare nursery include Aidan O’Brien’s St Leger hero Scorpion. B IRCHWOOD is the first produce of O’Callaghan’s Exceed And Excel mare Layla Jamil, who was picked up out of a claimer several years ago. Events of the last 12 months mean the mare’s career could not have started on a better note. “I sold Birchwood at Book 2 of the Tattersalls October Sale,” he says. “He was bought by Emma Armstrong for 77,000gns and obviously things couldn’t have gone any better since then. “It’s fantastic to have sold a horse of his class in my first year. Horses like him are what we’re all dreaming about producing. It’s what everybody aspires to and it’s been a great thrill watching him all season.” Birchwood’s exploits meant O’Callaghan’s first consignment at last month’s Doncaster Premier Yearling Sales contained one of the stars of the first yearling auction of the year in Britain. The colt in question was a Dark Angel brother to Birchwood, and he was understandably in some demand given his elder sibling’s exploits. The hammer eventually came down in favour of John Ferguson at £270,000, which made him the second-highest priced lot at this year’s sale. “It was wonderful to sell one so well,” says O’Callaghan. “Obviously he had the big update, which was a major help, but he was also a physical specimen who matched up to his page and it’s just very hard to match up both in a yearling. “He’d done very well throughout the year and I felt I was sitting on a very nice horse. Happily everything went well with him when he got to Doncaster and hopefully he can go on to emulate his brother.” The initial indications from this year’s yearling market have been quite positive and O’Callaghan believes the current trend should continue over the course of the next month, which represents the pivotal period for all major yearling operations. “If you have the goods you’re going to be very popular,” says O’Callaghan. “The top end of things has been very strong and if you qualify for that level you’ll be well paid. Over the last couple of years we’ve seen a lot of growth at the top of the yearling market.” In all it has been a memorable 12 months for O’Callaghan. On the track and in the sales ring his Grangemore Stud operation has quickly emerged as a consignor of some renown, and with 15 yearlings due to come under the hammer at the various major yearling sales in the coming weeks, he could have plenty more to look forward to over the course of the autumn. That is not an easy idea to digest when a horse who many hail as the greatest ever seen is about to be represented by his first yearlings offered in Ireland, but when it comes to the breeding shed the son of Galileo is back to square one. His sire, on the other hand, is responsible for 14 regally bred lots on offer at a sale that in recent years has been streamlined to ensure quality prevails over quantity, with much success. Despite his record, however, the Coolmore colossus is still likely to be fighting Frankel for the limelight. Buyers have been largely keen to snap up the few of his progeny to be offered – including the €1.8 million filly out of dual Classic winner Finsceal Beo who smashed the record for a foal at Goffs when selling to Dermot Farrington. But for those without a seven-figure bank balance, solace can be sought in the case of this year’s Irish Oaks winner Covert Love, who was available for a five-figure sum in 2013. Diamonds are there to be found – it is for the buyers to uncover their sparkle. A brother to the Irish 1,000 Guineas winner (below, lot 84) is one of the 32-strong Castlebridge Consignment and the operation’s Bill Dwan is keen on the February-born offering. “As is generally the case with Galileo yearlings, this colt has a great temperament,” says Dwan. “Since his arrival he’s taken everything in his stride, he enjoys the daily routine of walking and lunging, and as we’ve increased his workload he’s handled it effortlessly. “He also has a wonderful appetite and cleans his feed pot as a result he hasn’t missed a day’s exercise. “In addition to being mentally very good this colt has the most athletic walk, which should catch the eye of potential buyers and obviously being a brother to an Irish 1,000 Guineas winner, he won’t be short of admirers at Goffs.” OMANSTOWN STUD has been enjoying a typically good season both on course and in the ring. One lot from its 14-strong draft at the Orby Sale who particularly catches the eye is lot 227, a Dark Angel sister to Group 1 runner-up Sovereign Debt. The family received a notable vote of confidence when a Dark Angel colt out of Golden Rosie, an xceed And xcel half-sister to the dual Listed winner, was knocked down to John Ferguson for 240,000 at the DBS Premier Sales the auction’s fourth-highest price. That sum could prove value for money given Sovereign Debt is still going strong at the age of six and holds an entry in the Group 3 Coolmore Stud Home of Champions Concorde Stakes five days after his sister goes under the hammer. Lot 133, a half-brother to leading juvenile US Law (left), and lot 381, a filly out of Listed winner Rose Bonheur All eyes on Frankel’s super sextet THE six Frankel yearlings set for Goffs represent just 1.2 per cent of the Orby catalogue – but you can bet your bottom dollar they will command far more than that share of the headlines. Among the half-dozen are a Rathbarry Stud-consigned colt out of Musical Treat (lot 303) – the dam of Finsceal Beo, whose Frankel filly smashed the record for a foal at Goffs when fetching €1.8 million in November – and a filly out of star racemare Alexander Goldrun (23) from Mountarmstrong Stud, which features on pages 14-16. Camas Park Stud will offer a filly out of Listed winner Rose Bonheur (381), while Ballylinch Stud offers a half-brother to crack juvenile US Law out of Dookus (133), a daughter of top two-year-old Pharaoh’s Delight and closely related to Breeders’ Cup winner Red Rocks, by Frankel’s sire Galileo. Just a few lots later the Castlebridge Consignment will offer a Frankel colt from the stellar family of Park Express and her son New Approach (138), with the select group completed by lot 186, SPORTSMAN’S SALE SINCE its reintroduction in 2012 the Goffs Sportsman’s Sale has grown steadily in size and turnover, and while last year’s average and median fell year on year, the 82 per cent clearance rate showed the day is a true marketplace. Goffs has catalogued 244 lots for the fourth year of the sale, a number markedly down on the 296 catalogued 12 months ago to ensure a more concentrated period of selling within the day – although the company reports demand for the sale remains strong. Last year’s auction was topped by a €90,000 daughter of Motivator knocked down to Eddie Lynam, and while her sire is not represented among the lots this year, buyers will not be short of choice with a total of 74 stallions listed in the index. Frankel demolishing his Queen Anne rivals in his racecourse pomp a Frankel granddaughter of champion filly Imagine, consigned by Barronstown Stud. Expectations will be sky-high as these youngsters take their first steps into the limelight, but it will still be some time yet until we know whether Frankel is as potent at stud as he was dominating on course. Much pedigree theory would suggest his offspring are unlikely to better, or even equal, their sire’s achievements – but so great was his record and contribution to the sport, any who accomplish even half as much will be a racehorse of the highest calibre. Darley resident Casamento, whose first foals f lew off the shelves last year, including at Goffs – where 36 of 41 offered sold for a high of €210,000, average of €38,000 and aggregate of €1,368,000 – is the most prolific sire with 11 yearlings catalogued. Other first-crop sires on offer include Power, the sire of a half-sister to top producer Swiss Lake (lot 522), Bated Breath, represented by a colt out of Ribblesdale Stakes winner Spanish Sun (711) among his four lots, and Famous Name, sire of a filly closely related to dual champion mare Pipalong (701). It is not only new boys on offer, however. Cape Cross, sire of three Epsom Classic winners including 2015 Derby hero Golden Horn, is represented by a colt and a filly apiece, the latter hailing from the family of another Classic winner in Cockney Rebel (629), while the ever-reliable Acclamation and Kodiac are sure to prove popular as always. Rathbarry Stud stalwart Acclamation has three fillies catalogued, including a granddaughter of Prix de l’Opera winner Satwa Queen (676), and Kodiac’s nine lots include a close relation to Cheveley Park Stakes scorer Rosdhu Queen (643), a daughter of the sire’s half-brother Invincible Spirit. There are also those in between and on the ascent, such as leading first-season sires Zoffany and Canford Cliffs. The latter’s draft includes a colt out of Cape Fillies’ Guineas scorer Igreja (598). Like the duo, the Sportsman’s Sale is still making its name – but with Group winners including Agnes Stewart and Final Frontier, while it may be held in the Orby’s shadow, its graduates can still shine as brightly as their more expensive counterparts. Goffs Bloodstock Pocket Post Friday, September 18, 2015 Fireworks set for Approach sister DAWN APPROACH (below ) will be represented by his first yearlings this time next year, but for those who cannot wait for the next generation a sister to the 2,000 Guineas and Royal Ascot winner is on offer from Jim Bolger’s Redmondstown Stud ( ). A daughter of New Approach, she is out of the Phone Trick mare Hymn Of The Dawn, whose son Herald The Dawn also by Darley’s young gun became her second Group winner from six runners when landing the Futurity Stakes last month and came second in the National Stakes. The last time a sister to Dawn Approach went under the hammer was at the 2012 Orby Sale when Prudent Approach lit up the ring after selling to Peter and Ross Doyle for 775,000. Hailing from a Jim Bolger-honed family with a pedigree gaining ever-more black type, three years on there could be more family fireworks. DRAGON PULSE is one of 22 sires represented by their first-crop yearlings at this year’s Orby Sale, and while the dual Group winner’s breeder Owenstown Stud may not be offering any of its yearlings by the sire, it could have an equally sought-after commodity – an Invincible Spirit half-brother to the Irish National Stud resident himself. Offered as lot 344 on day two, the April-born colt is the fifth foal out of the Croco Rouge mare Poetical. “It’s so far, so good,” says Owenstown’s John Tuthill. “He’s taken to his prep very well and I like the way he’s going, I’m very happy. “He’s not a clone of Dragon Pulse, he’s a bit different, but I like him a lot.” The County Kildare operation will offer four Dragon Pulse yearlings over the coming weeks, including at the Goffs Sportsman’s Sale following the Orby. “We have a Dragon Pulse filly for Goffs (547),” says Tuthill. “She’s a good-walking filly, she’s nice. “I’m very pleased with the Dragon Pulses. As a group they seem to walk well and have good temperaments.” The family is in safe hands at Owenstown, with Poetical’s daughter Rhythm And Rhyme part of the broodmare band. The Elnadim five-year-old visited Dark Angel this season following the arrival of a filly by Dragon Pulse’s sire Kyllachy. Tinnakill aiming high with Bullet Train colt BULLET TRAIN is used to his elder sibling Frankel stealing the limelight, having served as his pacemaker in many a race. However, Tinnakill House Stud will be hoping the Bullet Train name stands out in its own right at this month’s Orby Sale when offering the sole lot by the US ( resident (right, lot 345). The Derby Trial winner was relocated to Wintergreen Stallion Station then Crestwood Farm in Kentucky after his retirement from racing and has shuttled to Bowness Stud in New South Wales. Tinnakill’s colt hails from the sire’s first northern-hemisphere crop and is out of the Orientate mare Poule D’Eau from the family of Group 1-winning juvenile Spartacus and Gallinule Stakes scorer Johan Cruyff. Tinnakill House manager Ian Thompson says of the import: “Dermot [Cantillon] had the plan to pinhook three US yearlings, mainly for the different pedigrees they’d offer. He knew there wouldn’t be many over here by Bullet Train so we thought he might stand out on rarity value. “The colt is very nice, he’s an outstanding mover – probably the best mover we have. His year-younger brother, three-year-old Pietrangelo, is in training with David Lanigan for Bjorn Nielsen. This filly has taken after her mother in the looks department according to Robert Tierney, manager of the 250-acre farm. “She’s a very, very nice filly and is similar to her mother,” he says. “Alexander Goldrun was a super racemare and her daughter is very like her, she definitely has the stamp of her mother.” The 14-year-old daughter of Gold Away is described by the Tipperary native as “a lovely looking mare with a great way of going about her”, and her first daughter has inherited much of mother’s best traits. “She has a top-class pedigree and we think the article matches up to the pedigree,” Tierney adds. Davenport Milenium, a Grade 1-winning hurdler, and Champion Bumper and Irish Hennessy Gold Cup winner Alexander Banquet are among O’Callaghan’s most famous horses but, despite breeding 2013 Grand National hero Auroras Encore, Mountarmstrong is completely focused on producing top-class Flat horses with its broodmare band of 30. The farm’s jumps exploits have been surpassed by those of Gigginstown House Stud, the operation owned and run by two of O’Callaghan’s nephews – Michael and Eddie O’Leary. That policy will be in evidence at Tattersalls where Mountarmstrong is sending a strong draft of yearlings, headed by two sons of Acclamation in Book 1. “The Acclamation yearling out of Remember Alexander (409) is a super colt, a real standout, especially for a first foal,” says Tierney of the son of the Group 3-winning mare, who has a filly foal by Kodiac at foot. Alexander Youth is a winning daughter of Exceed And Excel whose first two foals to race have won so her Acclamation colt (41) is eagerly anticipated and her 2015 produce is a filly by Sea The Stars. “Our draft for Book 2 is headed by a Dream Ahead colt out of Alexander Queen (569), who is a half-sister to Anthem Alexander and Dandy Man,” Tierney says. “He’s a smashing looking colt with a great attitude towards everything and he loves his work.” Lot 770 is a first foal, a daughter of Pour Moi out of Distant Symphony from the family of Crystal Music, while lot 707 is a son of Lawman out of the Listed-winning Galileo mare Distant Legend. “The Rip Van Winkle colt out of Obama Rule (1132) is a very nice horse too and the dam is a lovely young mare. Her sister Osaila won the Sandringham Handicap at Royal Ascot this year and has also scored twice at Group 3 level.” Mountarmstrong also consigns a colt by Irish 2,000 Guineas winner Roderic O’Connor (613) and its draft is completed by Tipperary Boutique’s son of Zebedee, who is offered as lot 1761 in Book 3. L AST year’s Queen Mary Stakes winner Anthem Alexander is the farm’s flagbearer on the track and the homebred daughter of Starspangledbanner will return to the place of her birth when the time comes. The Listed-placed Online Alexander, who has won three times for trainer Kevin Ryan, will eventually join her among the ranks of the Mountarmstrong broodmare band to produce the next generation of horses to bear the Alexander name. The Alexander connection is from the world of hotels. The operation is one of six establishments in Dublin, the US and Gibraltar owned by Noel O’Callaghan through his O’Callaghan Hotels, as was the Davenport, which gave the Willie Mullins-trained Punchestown Grade 1 winner his name. That is the past. The present is Alexander Goldrun’s daughter of Frankel and the future is her filly foal by Shamardal. Genetic gold in the Golden Vale. Founded in 1988 by Nick Robinson, the syndicate is no stranger to big-race wins. This year flagbearer Tullius landed the Group 2 York Stakes – midway through his sixth season of racing. Operating in the Newbury and Berkshire area, the syndicate has seven horses spread between trainers Richard Hannon, Andrew Balding, Ralph Beckett and Charlie Hills, responsible for the Goodwood scorer. Kennet Valley racing manager Sam Hoskins says: “Magical Memory has been brilliant this year, especially for a horse who cost €35,000. When he won the Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood that was a very special day and very exciting for his owners.” Magical Memory, who belongs to a group of 18 Kennet Valley members, was purchased by Luke Lillingston at the Goffs Orby Sale in 2013. “He just has something about him, he has class and we’re lucky to have him,” says Hoskins. “He’s three years old now and you’d hope there’s more to come. “All of us liked him and his half-sister, Alutiq, was a very smart two-year-old. That suggested he could be good. “It’s great fun to compete at that level and it shows you don’t need to spend a massive amount at the sales to be successful. We have a finite budget and it makes sense to go to Ireland for the Orby Sale with the weaker Euro at the moment.” By Zebedee out of the Cadeaux Genereux mare Marasem, Magical Memory has run 13 times, winning four races and amassing £277,047 in prize-money. The gelding was last seen finishing a close third to Twilight Son, behind stablemate Strath Burn, in the Group 1 Haydock Sprint Cup this month. Magical Memory wins last month’s Stewards’ Cup are offered for sale to its members, and typically it is 16 people who own the horse. Hoskins believes understanding the sales market is key and says: “We have to buy the right horses for our syndicates and we know we can’t buy horses by a top sire. “I’d rather buy a yearling from a really Lillingston adds: “I’ve always been a fan of Zebedee and Magical Memory just had a beautiful look to him. “He had a lot of scope but I couldn’t have imagined he’d have grown into the big horse he is now. He has a lot of class and is from a family with a high percentage of winners. That’s something we look for at Kennet Valley.” Once bought the yearlings 17 Sam Hoskins: “We have to buy the right horses for our syndicates” good mare who you know can produce winners year after year and is by a stallion who isn’t as fashionable.” Having built on its success in 2014, the operation is preparing to bolster its ranks and will have ten horses in training for 2016. Hoskins adds: “If we can find more horses like Tullius and Magical Memory, that would be great.” Lillingston shares those sentiments. “If we could find a yearling as good as Magical Memory we’d be very happy.” GROUP-WINNING GRADUATES LISTED AS SOLD SINCE 2012 Year Price (¤) Buyer(s) Vendor(s) ohannes ermeer orse 2014 300,000 BBA Ireland The Premier Consignment Juvenile S-G3 Painted Cliffs Sale continues to soar to great heights WHAT goes up must come down. So said Sir Isaac Newton – yet Book 1 of the Tattersalls October Yearling Sale has done an incredible job of defying his theory of gravitation. A stellar renewal of the 2013 sale, headlined by record-breaking 5,000,000gns filly Al Naamah and a 3,600,000gns colt named after the aforementioned physicist, returned an average up 27 per cent on the previous year – itself up 15 per cent from 12 months earlier. Such a trend would seem difficult to continue, but Tattersalls rose to the challenge last year and while the top lot of 2,600,000gns did not quite hit the same heights as its predecessor, the sale itself returned an average of 235,935gns – up 14 per cent on 2013. With 18 lots by Frankel and a half-sister to this year’s 1,000 Guineas winner Legatissimo just the tip of blue-breds found within the catalogue, vendors, buyers and the crowd of spectators who descend on Park Paddocks each October are sure to enjoy plenty of pre-Bonfire night fireworks. In addition to the exquisite yearlings on offer, buyers also part with their money in knowledge their purchases will be eligible for the new Book 1 bonus, a scheme offering £25,000 prizes to graduates who land a Class 2, 3 or 4 juvenile maiden in Britain or open juvenile maiden in Ireland. An admirable replacement for the Tattersalls Millions series, but a scheme many would hope could one day encompass Books 2 and 3. vvWhere Park Paddocks, Newmarket vvWhen Tuesday, October 6 to Thursday, October 8. The Aidan O’Brien-trained juvenile finished second behind Air Force Blue in the Phoenix Stakes on his most recent start and holds an entry in the Group 1 Dubai Dewhurst Stakes at Newmarket next month. His Rip Van Winkle half-brother, out of the Shinko Forest mare How’s She Cuttin’, will be offered as lot 236 (right) by Oghill House Stud – and the operation’s Hugh Friday, September 18, 2015 racingpost.com Hyland is looking forward to the yearling making his way through the ring. “He’s much like Washington DC in terms of looks and fits the bill of a Book 1 horse,” says Hyland. “He’s a later foal than Washington DC but he’s grown up a lot in the last few months. We’re very hopeful he’ll sell well and that Washington DC continues to perform on the track.” The County Kildare nursery also offers an Invincible Spirit filly, lot 385, out of Pleasantry – a half-sister to Classic winner and champion miler Kingman. “She’s a lovely filly,” says Hyland. “Invincible Spirit is a marvellous stallion and the filly looks really sharp – she could be a proper two-year-old.” Regal relation among Frankel squad IF THREE is the magic number, then what power must 18 hold when it refers to the near herd of Frankel yearlings heading to Book 1? Last month’s Arqana sale showed buyers are far from shy about snapping up a son or daughter of the dual champion, headed by a €1.15 million filly out of Platonic, the granddam of Irish Oaks winner Chicquita. Similarly well-bred lots – and a few arguably more so – can be found among those bound for Park Paddocks, including a colt out of Dubai Sheema Classic winner Dar Re Mi who has been the talk of the town for many months (lot 148), and a son of star producer Swiss Lake (482). Highclere Stud, a leading vendor at Book 1, brings to the group a half-brother to Sprint Cup winner Regal Parade out of Model Queen (339). “He’s a gorgeous colt, strong, powerful and a great mover,” says the stud’s Carolyn Warren. “He looks like a two-year-old. He’s got tremendous presence like his dad and he’s got wonderful elevated paces. We’re thrilled with him.” Hillwood Stud will consign one of just four fillies on offer by the sire, a half-sister to smart juveniles Steeler and Secret Brief (163). “She’s settling into prep well,” says Hillwood owner Charlie Vigors. “She’s a Dar Re Mi: the three-time Group 1 winner is dam of a Frankel colt, lot 148 good, athletic filly on the lunge, taking it all in her stride and enjoying her work. “She could be a sharp type – I wouldn’t say an Ascot two-year-old but from summer on.” Returning to Tattersalls is the Frankel filly out of Kirinda, who was knocked down for 150,000gns as a foal (268). “We’ve had her on the stud since she was bought at the end of November,” says Maura O’Sullivan of Cooneen Stud. “She wintered here very well and then went out for the spring. She came back in at the beginning of July and has taken preparation very well. “There’s a sparkle around Frankel at the moment with the yearlings and at the same time expectations are quite high. You’re hoping there’s profit to be made on her and at the end of the day that she goes on to do bigger and better things.” Lot 163, a filly out of Discreet Brief (left) from Hillwood Stud, and lot 339, Highclere Stud’s colt out of Model Queen LODG PAR STUD is no stranger to success at Tattersalls, having sold the record-breaking filly Al Naamah for 5,000,000gns at the October earling Sale in 2013. The County ilkenny operation also topped the sale in 2010 when her sister, subsequent Oaks heroine Was, sold to Demi O’Byrne for 1,200,000gns. This year the stud consigns lot 43, a Galileo brother to the pair. His dam, the Green Desert mare Alluring Park, is a half-sister to Derby hero New Approach, a five-time Group 1 winner and the sire of fellow Classic winners Dawn Approach and Talent. Damian Burns of Lodge Park Stud says: “The colt has a stallion’s pedigree and we couldn’t be happier with the horse physically. “It’s just down to what happens in the ring on the day. We’re lucky to be an hour from Galileo and as we’re a relatively small operation we’re always looking to do things that keep the foundations of our enterprise going.” A NUMB R of sires have just a sole lot on offer at Tattersalls, and one who holds particular rarity value is lot 63, a son of Darley’s champion Australian sire Lonhro. The son of Octagonal shuttled from his New South Wales base to Jonabell Farm in entucky for three seasons between 2012 and 2014 with the first of those runners making quite an impression in urope despite being few in number. Consigned by Lynn Lodge Stud, the Newmarket offering is out of the Listed runner-up Clever Trick mare Asheville and was pinhooked by Margaret O’Toole at eeneland for 60,000. Born in April, he is a half-brother to three winners including the stakes-placed Agastache from the family of Grade 1 scorers Valley Crossing, Femme lite and Ad Valorem. Bloodstock Pocket Post Friday, September 18, 2015 Tattersalls 23 All aboard for sole Bounty filly BAHAMIAN BOUNT has been consistently popular throughout his tenure at the National Stud, regularly providing returns well in excess of his stud fee and backing those sales up with a plethora of winners including Group 1 brothers Pastoral Pursuits and Goodricke. News of his retirement from covering duties will no doubt ensure his remaining yearlings continue to command plenty of interest, and those keen to acquire a member of the sire’s penultimate crop should pay attention to lot 310, a daughter of the Group 1 winner and the sole lot by him catalogued in Book 1. Offered by Luke Lillingston’s Mount Coote Stud, she is out of the Listed-placed Madame Boulangere, a daughter of Royal Applause from the family of Lancashire Oaks winner Lady Tiana. Would-be buyers who miss out on the filly can take solace in the fact six lots by Bahamian Bounty are set for Book 2. Celebratory Bonus launch TATT RSALLS officially launched its new Book 1 Bonus with a sumptuous lunch at the famed Scott’s Restaurant in Mayfair last month. The scheme, which replaces the Tattersalls Millions Series, will offer a 25,000 bonus to the connections of graduates who win a Class 2, 3 or 4 juvenile maiden in Britain or an open two-year-old maiden in Ireland. Tattersalls chairman dmond Mahony said: “Pri e-money is the lifeblood of the sport and we are proud to be introducing a scheme that looks set to capture the imagination of owners, trainers and consignors, and that will launch celebrations for the 250th anniversary year of the founding of Tattersalls.” Lot 24, the Redoute’s Choice filly out of Yummy Mummy (left), and lot 439, a daughter of Street Cry and Shastye Gesture sibling set to raise spirits THERE is perhaps no horse who deserves a top-flight win more than Secret Gesture, the dual Oaks runner-up who lost last month’s Beverly D Stakes in the stewards’ room. The appeal is ongoing, but her dam Shastye can hopefully provide a welcome tonic for the mare’s breeder and part-owner Newsells Park Stud at Tattersalls. Bought by the stud for 625,000gns in 2005, in recent years Shastye has become the queen of Newsells Park, not only providing Secret Gesture but also record-breaking yearling Sir Isaac Newton, who sold for 3.6 million guineas at Book 1 in 2013. At that time she was already in foal to a king, the late Darley sire Street Cry, and the resulting filly is on offer at Park Paddocks next month (lot 439). The loss of Street Cry last year was a blow to breeders in both hemispheres, the shuttle sire having cracked both industries with the likes of Breeders’ Cup heroine Zenyatta and Melbourne Cup winner Shocking. Leading British performers by the sire include Derby third Carlton House and crack juvenile Saamidd, while his daughter Lura is responsible for 1,000 Guineas runner-up Lucida. Secret Gesture is first past the post in the Beverly D Stakes at Arlington Park However, his latest filly to go under the hammer is just one of 22 lots offered by the Hertfordshire operation, whose leading consignor form-figures since 2010 read 41363 – an impressively consistent performance in this toughest of arenas. This year’s draft is as strong as any, with other likely standouts including a Frankel filly out of dual Grade 1 winner Dynaforce (174), a brother to The FASTEST son of FASTNET ROCK FOXWEDGE GROUP 1 WINNER OVER SIX FURLONGS Contact: Phil Haworth or Ed Harper 01725 518254 www.whitsburymanorstud.co.uk Newsells Park sire Equiano (184), a Dubawi colt out of black-type producer Flawly (203) and a son of Dansili out of Fillies’ Mile runner-up Lady Darshaan (278). One lot who enjoyed a notable update during the second Irish Champions Weekend is a daughter of Redoute’s Choice out of Yummy Mummy (24), the dam of Matron Stakes winner Legatissimo. Tattersalls 24 Katherine Fidler talks to Mark Weinfeld of Meon Valley Stud, which has few peers when it comes to consigning top Book 1 yearlings T HE name Meon Valley Stud is synonymous not only with top-class performers but also four other great names – Reprocolor, One In A Million, Odeon and Home And Away. These four mares form the foundation of the now 32-strong broodmare band at Mark Weinfeld’s Hampshire operation, founded more than three decades ago by his late father Egon, who purchased the now-renowned quartet as yearlings for a total of Friday, September 18, 2015 racingpost.com GOLDEN VALLEY 141,500gns. Last year was the first time he consigned under the Stauffenberg Bloodstock banner and he had a stellar sale, with six lots sold between Books 1 and 2 for 1,240,000gns. Three of that sextet were bought as foals and were resold for healthy profits. At Book 1, he sold a Champs Elysees colt, bought as a foal for 160,000gns, to John Warren for 320,000gns and a Pour Moi filly to Bertrand Le Metayer for 250,000gns, having paid 140,000gns for Friday, September 18, 2015 racingpost.com ‘ eop e o a e o t t e or e ae a e a t at’ ey’ Philipp Stauffenberg: seven yearlings in Book 1 her as a foal. At Book 2, Stauffenberg sold a Holy Roman Emperor colt he had bought as a foal for 70,000gns to BBA Ireland for 165,000gns. The Champs Elysees colt, a half-brother to Rockfel Stakes winner Al Thakhira now named Shahbar, has won a Sandown maiden and has Group 1 entries, as has the Holy Roman Emperor colt named Rockaway Valley, who Ittlingen in Westphalia for 16 years, was quick to reinvest the profits made at the yearling sales on foals. He will make the trip from Germany to Newmarket next month with seven yearlings for Book 1, five of whom were sourced as foals. Stauffenberg paid €210,000 for the dearest Casamento foal (lot 64) at the Goffs November Sale – a half-sister scored in a maiden before placing at Group 2 level for Jessica Harrington. “I knew I had some nice horses,” says Stauffenberg, who sold Deutsches Derby hero Lucky Speed for €46,000 in 2011. “But you can never predict how well they will sell. I was delighted for the whole team and all involved with the results. With the limited numbers we can accommodate we try to focus on quality. “In the past two years it has paid off for my investors, and people who have bought the horses have had success, and that’s key. From the first four foals we bought we’ve had a Listed winner, a Group 2-placed horse and the other two have won.” Stauffenberg, who has been operating out of Schlossgut Bloodstock Pocket Post Friday, September 18, 2015 Tattersalls 29 Pictures: FRANK SORGE Philipp Stauffenberg’s picturesque base at Schlossgut Ittlingen in Westphalia, Germany LOTS WHO HAVE PREVIOUSLY APPEARED IN THE SALES RING ot Se 2 3 5 11 1 2 32 36 52 53 54 55 56 63 64 6 0 3 5 0 1 0 5 to high-class sprinter Hot Streak – before heading to Tattersalls where he parted with 160,000gns for a Dutch Art colt (150), 150,000gns for an Elusive Quality filly (451), and 85,000gns on a Zoffany colt (220). I have to say I i e the year i gs I have or the sa e Phi i Sta e erg “The strong foal market last year meant we had to spend more money than the year before for the same quality of horses. Hopefully the market will hold up. The sales at Arqana and DBS haven’t been too bad, so hopefully the quality we have will pay off.” Stauffenberg adds: “They’ve all prepped very well. I’m happy with the way they’ve all progressed. I’m asked a lot to select a standout yearling, but it’s not an easy question to answer. They’re all different. Some look fast, early two-year-old types, while others look like they’ll need a little more time, more of a Classic type. We spend a lot on them as foals, we look for quality, and now we’re looking for buyers willing to invest in quality yearlings.” Stauffenberg is confident the economic turmoil in the Far East will have little effect on trade at Book 1. “It seems quite surprising how the bloodstock bubble survives during most economic problems,” he says. “I don’t know how things will work out, but we live in hope. whose Poet’s Voice colt topped the Book 2 Sale when selling for a record-breaking 525,000gns last year, returns to Park Paddocks offering his Acclamation half-sister (lot 1,190). The filly is the fifth foal out of the Foxhound mare Poppets Sweetlove and is a half-sister to the winners Patentar and Lady Poppy. The stud’s Ed Player is happy with the filly ahead of the sale and said: “She’s a very nice individual. She looks like a real two-year-old and we like her a lot. “She was born and raised on the stud as we’ve had a lot of her family here. She has taken to her prep really well and has been one of those who are a joy to prepare. “We completely understand we’re not going to have the fireworks of last year and were very lucky with how things turned out with the colt, but we’re hopeful she makes good money as we think she’s very nice.” Top lot (gns) 2014 414 336 81 79,274,000 235,935 2,600,000 450 339 75 70,343,000 207,501 5,000,000 2012 514 418 81 68,102,500 162,925 2,500,000 2011 446 364 82 51,634,000 141,852 1,700,000 2010 595 449 75 48,243,000 107,445 1,200,000 TOP TEN PURCHASERS IN 2014 By aggregate Buyer No. horses Average (gns) Total (gns) 38 459,605 17,465,000 John Ferguson Bloodstock MV Magnier 9 765,000 6,885,000 J Warren Bloodstock 29 235,690 6,835,000 C Gordon-Watson Bloodstock 22 280,000 6,160,000 Shadwell Estate Company 13 336,154 4,370,000 Peter & Ross Doyle Bloodstock 15 254,467 3,817,000 Rabbah Bloodstock 34 91,824 3,122,000 Blandford Bloodstock 12 168,083 2,017,000 BBA Ireland 12 135,833 1,630,000 3 468,333 1,405,000 No. sold Average (gns) Total (gns) 27 297,593 8,035,000 TOP TEN VENDORS IN 2014 By aggregate Vendor Highclere Stud Camas Park Stud 17 304,529 5,177,000 Watership Down Stud 13 346,308 4,502,000 Newsells Park Stud Ltd 13 271,385 3,528,000 The Castlebridge Consignment 20 171,000 3,420,000 3 975,000 2,925,000 Glenvale Stud 11 261,727 2,879,000 Ashbrittle Stud 1 2,600,000 2,600,000 Winter Derby-G3 Meon Valley Stud 9 271,111 2,440,000 Ontario Matron S-G3 Ballyhimikin Stud 3 631,667 1,895,000 2,000 Guineas S-G1 Lockinge S-G1 Great Voltigeur S-G2, Prix Foy-G1 King George VI & Queen Elizabeth S-G1 Sudirman Average (gns) 2013 Al Shaqab Racing Cannock Chase Aggregate (gns) Railway S-G2 Phoenix S-G1 Mill Reef S-G2 Floors Stud Follow the Bear and co for top results BOOK 2 RECORD was the watchword at last year’s Book 2 sale – a new high was set for the top lot, aggregate, average and median, despite the number of horses being sold falling from 765 to 660. A hard act to follow for 2015, then, but in reality it is the results on course that count – Group 1-winning graduates this season include sprint star Mecca’s Angel and Classic winner Jack Hobbs. The pair were bought for 16,000gns and 60,000gns, and with 915 lots catalogued there are sure to be more where they came from. A quick-fire Group double by Kodi Bear has ensured a mighty update for his Zebedee half-sister (lot 894), who will go under the hammer on day two of Book 2. Trained by Clive Cox, the son of Kodiac is now his sire’s highest-rated performer, having also finished fourth to Territories in this season’s Prix Jean Prat. “The filly is lovely, a beautiful specimen with a very fluid action,” says Paul McCartan, who will consign the yearling through his Ballyphilip Stud. “It’s not just Kodi Bear who has given the page a boost. Esoterique is found under the third dam and she’s had a terrific year, winning the Prix Jacques le Marois and finishing second to Muhaarar in the Prix Maurice de Gheest – so all being well she should be popular.” The Februaryborn yearling, out of the Mujtahid mare Hawattef, is one of eight lots on offer by the County Limerick operation. Kodi Bear: his Zebedee half-sister is lot 894 New Providence sibling leads way for husband-and-wife team JAMES ORTEGA BLOODSTOCK, which bred dual Group 3 winner New Providence, is offering a Bated Breath half-brother to Hugo Palmer’s three-year-old (lot 633). Jim Atkinson, who set up the breeding operation with his wife Martha Ortega, has bred three foals out of the Giant’s Causeway mare Bayja. As well as producing New Providence, Bayja is the dam of Ahdaf, who got off the mark in a 6f nursery handicap at Carlisle this month. Atkinson is looking forward to offering the April-born colt and said: “We’re very hopeful he’s going to do well, he looks like a two-year-old and I think he’s going to be a sprinter. “I like Bated Breath, he had some yearlings sell well at Arqana and Doncaster. I have two [yearlings] for Book 2 and I think the Bated Breath one is likely to do well.” Tattersalls 32 Friday, September 18, 2015 racingpost.com the WEATHERBYS STALLION BOOK The only truly global stallion guide - going from strength to strength App Online Over 30k downloads Over 27k unique users monthly website Book OVER 350 ENTRIES FROM ALL LEADING RACING AND BREEDING JURISDICTIONS Digital Turn Page Widely available through key Industry websites To feature your stallion please contact Nick Craven at the sales or on +44 (0)7850 025835 ncraven@weatherbys.co.uk weatherbys stallion book
