July brings more great racing for Oregon Region. July 5-7 is
a Double Regional at PIR and NASPORT will be joining us
(yes, being a Regional, there will be a Vintage grid as always).
Solo 2 also has events going on in the Pro Pits at PIR that
weekend, Saturday, July 6 is a members only practice limited
to the first 60 people who sign up, and Sunday is a full fledged
Solo 2 autocross. Another RallyCross event is coming up at
the end of July at the Columbia County Fairgrounds on
Sunday, July 28th. Not an SCCA event, but always fun will
be the Baxters Historic Races at PIR on July 12-14.
It’s that time of the year again to submit nominations for
the BFGoodrich Worker of the Year awards, presented annually by the folks at BFGoodrich to honor volunteers who
make SCCA events happen. Each recipient will receive a
plaque and a certificate for a set of BFGoodrich T/A tires.
Nominations are due Aug. 1 and should be sent to Sue
Roethel (sroethel@scca.org) at the national SCCA office.
Specialties covered under this program are: Registrars,
Flagging & Communicaitons, Scrutineers, Pit, Paddock,
Sound Control, Timing and Scoring, Race Chairman, Course
Marshal, Emergency Services, Grid, and Starters. Help to
have our workers honored and send in a nomination or two
and help tell the rest of SCCA how great our folks are!!

OBJECTS IN THE MIRROR
May Be Closer Than They appear
BY: DAVE ISSELHARD, ROAD RACING DIRECTOR
E-MAIL:
mk1racing@juno.com
Is the Cup half-full, or is it half-empty? The 2002 Rose
Cups are over as is the SCCA Support Race on the CART
weekend. To me the Cup is half-full: Summertime
Racing Season, July and August, is upon us. July 5-7 is a
Double Regional w/Vintage and a NASPORT Invitational
and August 2-4 will be another Double Regional
w/Vintage and a NASPORT Invitational.
But let’s look in the Mirror. The Rose Cups were sensational. Record entries and great racing! Monte Shelton
totals one car and goes home to get his ageless Porsche.
All this and we manage within a few minutes of staying
"on" Schedule. The latest word on Todd Lamberton that I
have received is that he is stable and recovering. Last,
through the efforts of Mike Belzer, the SCCA gets a film
clip on Channel 2 (KATU) courtesy of Dan Tilkin, Ace
Reporter. Dan is in the process of becoming a member of
SCCA. In the future perhaps we will have our own
"Voice" on local T.V.
A second look in the Mirror brings into view the "George
Morlan Plumbing Invitational Sports Car Race", the
SCCA Support Race on CART Weekend. What a show!
Thank you George Morlan and our thanks to the Race
Operations Managers, Bob Smethers and Bud Mansur and
all the Race Workers and Stewards that made these race
weekends possible. Special thanks to Greg Bell, Jeff
Zurschmeide, Tim Liefke and all the others whose vision
and hard work made the George Morlan Plumbing
Invitational Support Race a real happening.
Last, but not least, thanks to the Stewards who orchestrated these Race Weekends. Their Specialty, under the calm
leadership of Skip Yocom, insured that the racing was fair
and the events were fun for all.
I am truly proud to be a member of this organization.
I’ll see you in July.
Remember, "OBJECTS IN THE MIRROR, May be
Closer Than They Appear.
Take care of each other out there!

Cindi Lux leads Gary Bockman and Scotty B. White
into turn 2 of the festival curves on the first lap of the
George Morlan Sports Car Invitational Race.
Scotty B. White First, Cindi Lux Second in the GTS Class;
Gary Bockman First, Brad McAllister Second in the GT
Class. Overall, Scotty B. White beat Gary Bockman to the
checker by 0.388 seconds. A quote from Joe Harlan of
Top Tech Motorsports: "Racing down the front straight
and seeing crew people in the CART paddock watching us
clubbies race or going through the back side of the track
and seeing the grandstands with loads of people and the
spectators sitting on top of the motorhomes all having a
good time was just unbelievable".

As I write this we have completed events three and
four and are gearing up for number five, which will be
the halfway event in the regional points chase. Our
last events were on Mother’s Day weekend, which
usually means a slightly lower turn out. Sure enough,
Sunday, the sunny and hot day, had a lower entry
(118) than Saturday (135) which was partly cloudy. I,
along with others, was doing Mother’s Day duty on
Sunday so I can’t comment on how well things went,
except that all competitors got six runs so I don’t think
anyone was going to complain too much. The course
design done by Chad Olerich was fast and challenging,
with a number of increasing radius turns. Run in
reverse direction on Sunday, it was still fast and, the
now decreasing radius turns, making it very challenging to have the correct line on exiting a corner. Sort
of, have the correct line – go fast, wrong line – crush
cones or big slowdown, with nothing in between.
Overall, another great weekend with no incidents and
everyone went home safely.
The May event was also notable in that we were able
to change the course on Saturday night and leave it set
up overnight instead of tearing it down to host the late

night drag racers. Thanks to Oregon Region RE, Holly
Remington, the road racers worked out a compromise
layout in the south pits, including security, that left
room for the drag racers to run at night and still allow
the road racers and Solo2 to keep their spaces. As
many of you know, PIR is pushing plans to move all of
the road racing activities to the inside pits (what we
call the ProPits) and have Solo2 run in that strange
shaped area we call the Paddock. Drag racing would
continue to be in the Paddock and Solo2 would have to
set up the morning of an event and tear down each
night. This enables PIR to sell spectator parking on the
paved area (and in the grass?) for drag racing (they are
filling the grandstands) and this is important money for
PIR to stay budget healthy (read ‘in the black’). If this
comes to pass, then next year all of our Solo2 events
would be in the Paddock. It’s a very bumpy surface
and very odd shaped, but it may be all we have. The
Solo2 committee is looking at other sites, but none of
them are close in to the city. If you know of any
worthwhile sites please let any of the committee mem-

RALLY EXTREMES
BY: MATT TABOR, RALLY DIRECTOR

Summer is here and it’s getting hot out! It’s time
for some fun in the sun, and with the RallyCross
season in high gear, the ClubRally year well underway, and a very successful Rose City Challenge just
past, the Rally Division is out if force! Before we
get into all that, I want to just congratulate everyone
who worked on this year’s Rose Cup weekend. This
was the first time I had attended the Rose Cups,
and everything seemed to run very smoothly. I
have heard nothing but good reports from various
different points of view (competitors, workers and
spectators), and all were very pleased. Another
fantastic year for Rose Cups and Oregon Region!
May 18th and 19th saw the National RoadRally
Championships roll into town for the Rose City
Challenge: A two day RoadRally event featuring the
Beaver Cleaver National Course rally on Saturday
and the Barlow Trail National Tour Rally on
Sunday. The Beaver Cleaver course event was a
grueling 24-leg event, full of variable Main Route
Determinants (MRD), both Numbered and Lettered
route instructions, and a few sneaky checkpoints.

bers know about them (or if you have 15 acres of
pavement in your backyard). The Oregon Region
board is still negotiating with PIR and trying to
find a satisfactory compromise that, hopefully, will
keep us in our current locations.
And, speaking of the Paddock, our next event is
going to be there (probably before you read this).
Thanks to the cooperation of the Portland Karting
Association, we will rent the Paddock from them
while they use the track and infield for their event.
Although the pavement is very bumpy (and the
bottom of my Reynard FF has the scars to prove
it!), using the paddock once or twice a season
allows us to get at least eight (ten this year) points
events during the sunny (?) summer NW months.
The very next weekend (of July 4th), Saturday will
be our limited entry Practice Day (which is now
full) and Sunday is the next points event. Both
days will be in the ProPits. Also, if you want to
come to a committee meeting, June’s meeting has
been cancelled and July’s moved to Wednesday,
the 17th at Race Central. That’s all for now. Hope
to see you at the track.
Coming home the winners on the first day were
rally veterans and Class L (Limited) winners Jeanne
Englinsh (Cal Club) and Dave Kolb (New England
Region), stealing the win from the Class E
(Equipped) cars, who usually take overall honors.
The Class E win went to Chuck Larouere and Rick
Beattie (both of Steel City’s Region), falling also
into 2nd overall. The Stock Class (Class S) win
went to Julie and Steve Gaddy (Land o’ Lakes
Region). Rallymaster Monte Saager kept the teams
on their toes all day long, and still found time to
invite everyone over to his house for the afternoon
break, which consisted of brownie hot fudge sundaes. A nice treat!
The Barlow Trail Tour Rally on Sunday had a total
of 28 controls, most of which were passage controls
(no stopping, just drive by and your time is recorded
by the crew), and took a fairly brisk pace from it’s
Oregon City start through lunch in Molalla, South to
Silverton and then back to finish in Wilsonville.
Winners of the event, with a scant 22 points and by
an even slimmer margin of just 1 point, were
RoadRally legend Bob Morseburg and Cheri Eddy
(both of Northwest Region). They also won Class E
for the day. Falling that single hundreth of a minute
behind them were Jim Hathcock (Central Carolina)
and John Spears (Arizona). Winning Class L was
Dave Jameson and Karl Broberg (both from Arizona
Region), and taking the Class S honors were again
Steve and Julie Gaddy.
Congratulations go out to Monte and Victoria
Saager, and Kevin and Lawana Poirier for continuing to represent Oregon in the RoadRally arena by
putting on one of the best weekends of the
RoadRally season. This core group is now set to
begin preparations for next year’s Road Rally
Challenge to come to town in October 2003. This
three event weekend marks the end of the
RoadRally season each year, and Oregon Region
will play host in 2003. The organizing committee
is looking for people interested in assisting with
preparation of the event. No experience necessary!

UNKNOWN SPEC RACER
Is this the "paint-it-Black" tour for NORPAC this
year? John Black is back from CenDiv days, and
the title could well be his. John, who looks like he
never breaks a sweat, won the first national three
races, but like Dr. "Action" Jackson had just had
too much adrenaline for the rain during Rosecups.
Otherwise he might well have been four-for-four.
Was that a rod I saw sticking out of the side
of Bill Jucha's block? Gee Ken was that egg
on your……
OK, but you sure did put Jim Sweet back together
in fine order. Speaking of SoCal, Tom
Miserendino's son is only 16 and was the only SRF
in the 29's for the regional! WOW!
Now that we are on the subject of young, good
looking and TALENTED, isn't it great Chris
Knight is back in SRF? Now that Todd Harris has
retired to being a father, teacher & occasional
Trans-Am racer would that make Chris the Flag
Ship Racer of Pro-Drive? (Oops, SORRY J. Dane!)
Chris Brown also came up from SoCal to turn
one of the top five laps in the rain Saturday during the national race. And its great to have Matt
Haubner back from FM; he has dialed back into
the SRF quickly.
Trent Miller's new paint job sure looks good!
Great to see him move up in the finishing order, not
to mention Psycho Doc who may just well be this
years most improved SRF racer.
But this season will only be a shadow of what it
could have been without Todd Lamberton out there
to keep us honest. Todd may just well be the measure of what a SRF driver should be.
It is Tuesday June 11th as I write this. I visited
Todd at noon today. There had already been
almost a dozen SRF racers up there to visit him and
I met another (who flew in from San Francisco) on
the way out. Add to that Action Jackson speeding
through the hot pit to assist the E-crew, and ask
yourself, "is there anything better I can race?" NO,
there isn't! Family, belonging, and a sense of community are the trophies that the field from third on
back races for.
Now a point to ponder until August. Is Larry the
greatest SRF driver that no one outside of Oregon
has heard about?

THE DUCK STOPS HERE
By Howard “duck” Allen, Competition Manager
You know it's real bad when they bring the big
pieces on the truck just ahead of the hook. But I was
catching that over my shoulder at the time. I am at the
ambulance Neil is half inside at the door with Bob
Ames just behind. I look over them to see his icy blue
eyes and know the legend lives on. We will have
another RoseCups this weekend. Yeah, at any age your
bell gets rung when you hit the wall (first time) at 140
mph. But to put it politely when you are well into your
sixties. . . . . . . most people in their twenties should be
in that kind of shape.
If Rose Cups were one man or could be described in
one word it would be "Monte". What is the greater
story here? Monte making it back out to race in "old
blue" or Steve Hodge offering his car to him?In this
"family" of racers it is almost impossible to have a
"first" family (see Shelton clan) but the Hodges have
got to be near the top of the list of contenders. So for
the first of many this month, Steve please accept this
tip-of-the-helmet for being first in class.
The weekend closed with a heart stopping Rich
Stephens redux of a crash. I have made NO secret of
my admiration of Todd Lamberton and his meteoric
rise through the SRF ranks, but racers, workers and
officials all held their breath until Todd was stabilized. This big teddy bear of a guy is the standard of
the "new" generation of SRF driver. He is indeed a
bear on the track. Intense, tough, hard, but always
fair and above all a GENTLEMAN racer. I have not
heard one bad word from those that have had the
honor of racing with him. I am sorry this season
ended so soon for him. The loss is ours, for all of us
from Jackson and Black on down measure ourselves
in his shadow. Class act, class man! Now heal, Todd,
and make that big walk in August. Kristine, I hope
this racing family has embraced you these last few
days and has given you the support to get through
this, because you too are now one of us. Welcome to
the family, we are all here for you.
Props go out to our NORPAC divisional medical
administrator, Chris "Action" Jackson, who sped to the
scene (third time) to offer aid, as a very accomplished
trauma surgeon. And also props to my Saturday running
buddy, Jeff "Psycho Doc" Niess, for organizing a "stress"
de-brief for all the affected workers. The family draws
very close when one of our own is hurt. Once again it is
time to remind you, our E-Crew is second to none.
Gordon Scott will always be the voice of P.I.R. but
don't Dane and Mark Goodman just take you into the
drivers seat! Thanks Dane, for once again keeping the
"elbow factor" alive (and Gordon's memory too).
In between we had not only the crown jewel of club
racing in the Northwest but what may soon be called
the Sprints West. Five hundred plus entries can not be
wrong. This is indeed the top race in SCCA west of the
rockies and lets drop the divisional jewel from the
triple crown and make it. A Sprints win, A RoseCups
win and A Run-Offs win.
The RoseCups race was the best in the last twenty
years. I have never seen so much talent and equipment
in a field. Everybody brought their "A" game with
them; hard driving, harder racing and just plain thrills.
It almost looked like Steve Hodge could bring the Cup
home to Oregon only to have the front end go south
with just a few laps to go. This will be the race to tell
the grandkids about. WOW.
The Porsche Cup and Festival Cup races delivered
thrills too. Deep fields, hard racing from first to twentieth spot; club racing doesn't get any better than that!
('cept for the WET SRF race on Saturday).
While all of this was going on, our crazy windsurfing buddies from Hood River were in Laguna representing the region in the SM support race for CART.
Jon Davies (the tall one) qualified 11th and finished
there. Mike Davies (the cute one) qualified 39th and
finished 25th. NOT bad for your first trip to Laguna
and by-the-way they did that in a SEVENTY car field!
Walked into my local Thriftway to be greeted by a
huge cardboard display with a big yellow formula
car on top! Props to the Crossley family for showing
the FM toy to the shopping world (next time please
be sure the Oregon Region sticker shows<G>!)
Which leads one to ponder……are coffee & steak
nuggets now the new millennium answer to the
Breakfast of Champions for our corner workers?
Thanks again Bob for coming through for the workers. (SORRY I didn't get any. John Black got mine he has a new addiction!)
Out of time and space for this month. So please
tune-in next month to find-out how driver/coach Tim
"Flipper" Connolly suffered bad whiplash in a brutal
donkey / golf cart accident in the Caribbean islands.
Now, last but NOT least, the final props and tipof-the-helmet go out to Mr. Jay Culbertson (Scott's
Dad), who not only raced and gave us the GT-4
winning driver, but was indeed the straw that stirred
the Rosecup drink for all of us. Thank you Jay for
making it happen.
Please tune in next month so we can recap how a
support race upstaged (IMHO) the main event<G>!

The Barlow Trail in Oregon History was known as a rough
alternate way around Mt. Hood into the Willamette Valley,
first attempted 157 years ago.
More recently, in Rally History, the Barlow Trail is known for
smooth roads, brisk speeds, and spectacular scenery. Barlow
Trail National Tour Rally is Day Two of the Rose City
Challenge, this year following The Beaver Cleaver National
Course Rally, May 18 & 19, 2002.
We took Sue’s "new" Impreza 2.5 RS to Oregon Region’s event in
Wilsonville, Oregon. The Odo Check was titled "Circle the Wagons!"
and led us to the "End of the Oregon Trail" museum in Oregon City.
We found that a digital odometer in Stock class is frustrating.
Knowing your error factor doesn’t help much, even with every route
instruction mileaged, if you have to guess at the spot where ".1" clicks
to ".2" on the readout. We had checked the speedo needle against the
clock and found it fast, with actual 60mph reading just under 63, a little less than 5%. The odo clicked over about 1% long, so the factors
on the "new" rally car were our biggest challenges.
"Eastward Ho!" was the first TSD section and we did head east
into the Clackamas Valley for a glimpse of Mt. Hood. The route
was mileaged, and target times shown for every turn or referenced
sign. Of course, none of the checkpoints were known. We had the
clock clicking away in seconds, the RI’s were in hundredths, so we
had to do the math to see how far off we were.
The first control came in a 24mph residential section just after we
had to explain to a local what "all these cars are doing". (I made up
a little too much, but not bad for Seat of the Pants). A little twisty
climb, then 42mph, with some 20mph corners, then 36 and 52.

A sunny spring day had the locals out in many areas and we
took advantage of our first Time Allowance to account for slow
traffic. Oregon speed limits are much more liberal than
Washington, so CASTs took full advantage of 55mph limits
where western Washington might only see 35mph zones.
Through neighborhoods named Fischers Mill, Four Corners,
and Viola (probably vi-o-la rather than vwah-lah, but the tricky
little right then left was more tah-dah!!). The local traffic held
us up a bit more and another TA was handed to the next control.
The rally came to a rest break in Estacada and we were joined
by an Old Ford Club tour, with the sports car folks admiring the
Fords and Lincolns, and the Ford folk curious about the rally cars.
After the break the next section was "Buckaroo". We used up two
more TAs due to congestion and thought we were doing OK into
the lunch break at Molalla for the "Road Kill Café". The odo was
out by over half a mile again by the end of this 42-mile section.
"Silver Falls" started the rally due south from Molalla with
three instructions in .3 miles then a 7 mile section to Scotts
Mills, just enough distance to let paranoia set in about a mileage
turn. Three passage controls seemingly on-time. Then, in rapid
fire, a missed sign (a missing sign), some short distance to find
a safe turnaround, another car on our minute looking for the
same turnaround, the only rain storm, the urge to make up lost
time, finding the errant road, calculating new odo readings and
new times, "looking for gophers" on the gravel (which I liked a
lot), preparing another TA, missing a somewhat hidden sign,
recovery, recalc the odo, add another line to the TA and find
ourselves on the same minute with the eventual winner, who
had done all that stuff right. I should have added another half
minute but by the time I thought it through we hit the control.
The transit into Silverton brought a welcomed rest stop amidst
a few quick instructions, mileage .20, .09, .06, .11, and .03, all
with one of Silverton’s finest joining the rally car parade.
The next section was aptly named the "Long and Winding
Road". We drove southeast toward Silver Falls State Park. The
78.84 mile TSD began with a vigorous in-car debate five minutes into the section about "straight"…, bearing left in a corner
or bearing right off the route…, after I’d driven past the intersection and abruptly stopped. The next route instruction was 7
miles later. "Okay, can’t do 51 on gravel, so this must be the
right way…" Calculate some interval times and try to get back
on time before finding a checkpoint. I don’t think I was completely successful, as the 51 was tough enough on the pavement.
We turn north then west toward Salem, then north again
toward Newberg and Champoeg State Park. A tour through
beautiful downtown Butteville and on to our last miscue: There
were two Boones Ferry signs, the first unnecessary, the second
correct. By now our miles were way out, but half a mile later
the stop sign we were looking for was nowhere to be seen. A uturn, a quick TA and we hit the control with another car.
Whew! Lulled to sleep by the long and winding road, then
shocked back to reality for the checkpoint.
Most scores were posted by the time we arrived at the finish,
and the last checkpoints added soon after. Getting off course a
couple of times didn’t help us at all… But we had a great time.
Congratulations to 1st Stock (SOP) Julie and Steve Gaddy
with 74; 1st Limited Dave Jameson and Karl Broberg with 30;
1st Equipped and 1st Overall Bob Morseburg and Cheri Eddy
with 22 for the day.
PS: The comment about 55 on backroads holds true for
California too. If you’re coming home to Oregon and
Washington from Sears Point, try north on 121 through Napa,
then east on 128 to the Interstate. It’s posted 55, with turnouts
that traffic actually uses. I was gleefully running at 45 with two
CHiPs bikes following behind, just enjoying the run too.

July 2002, Page 15
FROM A DIRECTOR’S CHAIR
BY CHERYL ‘MINDY’ ALLEN, DIRECTOR 1
"Road Trip!" Two words that will bring an immediate
smile to the face of most any Oregon Region corner worker. That certainly held true for the Northwest Region
Double National in May. Many of the Oregon Region F&
C crew, as well as other officials, made the trek north to
the newly refurbished Pacific Raceway. For many of us,
working the Northwest Double National is a Memorial
Day tradition, and it was great to see so many of our newer
workers join us this year.
After holding the event at Thunderhill the last three years,
there were some disorganized moments here and there during the three-day event, but all were handled with a smile and
positive attitude. I was delighted to find that none of the
things I loved best about the old SIR had changed. The
changes -- hot water in the restroom, toilets that actually
flush, safety improvements to the course -- have only made
one of my all time favorite road courses even better.
Apparently the two magic words (Road Trip) also bring a
smile to the faces of Northwest workers, as several of them
made the trip south to help us out at Rose Cups. Mike Evans,
Carol Wilhelm, Ricky Lee Berger, and the Carlson brothers
were here. Undoubtedly there were others I just didn't happen to run into over the weekend, but I want to thank them
all. In past years we have had an abundance of corner workers for the Rose Cup weekend, but for some reason the
turnout was a bit thinner this year. It was good to have the
help from our friends to the north.
Speaking of Rose Cup - I'm a bit of a novice with only
twelve Rose Cup races under my belt - but I don't remember a closer finish in the Rose Cup race, or a bigger field
than we had in the Festival Trophy race. The weekend was
filled with many great races - and great races within races.
Large fields, and beautiful fast cars, life just doesn't get
much better than that.
It was good to see so many of the participants and officials
enjoying the catered breakfast feast on Sunday morning to
celebrate the 40th anniversary of Oregon Region. To say
that we all started the day with happy tummies would be an
understatement! The past and current R.E.s - Greg Bell and
Holly Remington - came up with the grand plan in an unsupervised moment, and Greg did the legwork to make it happen. I think they both deserve a thank you and (borrowing
from Duck) a huge tip of the helmet.
Unfortunately the Rose Cup weekend ended with a major
incident on the last lap of the last race when Todd Lamberton
(SRF #20) hit the end of the point at turn 12 and shot into the
front straight wall. Fortunately, as I write this, all of the
news on Todd is good. He is recovering from his injuries,
and by the time this is printed should be out of the hospital
and getting ready for his marriage to Christine in August.
When a racer has a major incident such as Todd did, there
is obviously a great deal of emotional trauma to his or her
family and friends. What is less obvious is the impact on the
workers and other officials who are involved. I think it is fair
to say that most of all of us are motivated to work races by a
Page 16
July 2002
deep desire to make racing as safe as possible for the competitors. When things go wrong, to a greater or lesser extent,
we all struggle with the emotional after effects.
What I saw happening in the moments and hours immediately after Todd's accident made me very proud of this
Region, and the incredible people who belong to it. The corner crew at turn 12 was outstanding. They were at Todd's car
within a couple of seconds. Diana Dance, a former EMT,
stabilized Todd's head, while TM Gary Frazier dealt with the
cars that were still racing. Bonnie Aarseth, on comm, kept a
constant - and calm - flow of information to Control. The
flaggers did their job. The E-crew and ambulances were dispatched immediately, and with Todd within a minute or two
of his impact. Trauma surgeon Chris Jackson, SRF #8, who
was right behind Todd on the last lap, probably got his fastest
lap of the race after the checkered flag flew, getting back to
provide medical care to Todd.
Afterwards, when Todd had been transported and the adrenaline started to wear off, Jeff Neiss (our own dear "Psycho
Doc") was there immediately to talk to the workers at turn 12
and help them deal with the emotional aftermath. Later, as
we waited for news from the hospital, we shared our tears and
many hugs, and breathed a huge sigh of relief together when
we knew that Todd would be okay. On a personal note, I
want to give a very big thank you to Erin Ebelmesser and Kim
MacFarland. I am sure you both know why.
Many others have said it, probably much better than I am,
but I treasure our race family. We are there to celebrate
together when things go well, and we are there for each other
when things go wrong.
And to Todd, we are all hoping that you recover quickly
and are back on track soon.
One last note. Occasionally members of our family leave
either temporarily or permanently -- but it seems wherever
they end up, a part of Oregon Region goes with them.
Bratpacker Joel Brown finished basic training and came
home for a visit that was too brief. He did manage to fit in a
trip to the Northwest Double National, but unfortunately had
had to pack up again and head to Germany before Rose Cups.
Word has it that he will spend a few months in Germany and
then go on to Kosovo. He would love to hear from his roadracing friends. His address is: Joel A. Brown, CMR 464 Box
392, APO AE 09226 (postage is the same as within the US);
or you can reach him by e-mail at: Bratpakracing@aol.com.
Ermina Coronas-Shapland, corner worker and most
recently, announcer for Oregon Region, has re-located to
Hawaii. She would also welcome news and race reports
from her mainland friends. Contact her by e-mail at:
emcoronas@hotmail.com
Last, but certainly not least, are Dan and Sally Lane, who
retired to Mexico a year or so ago. Life is good in Mazatlan;
they live just a couple of blocks from the beach and a certain
4-letter word (r-a-i-n) is no longer a part of their vocabulary.
But they miss their friends, and would also enjoy some race
reports. You can e-mail them at: senoritasal@prodigy.net.mx

Kim Hiskey #5 leads Randy Pobst #18 through turn two of the chicane during the Festival Trophy race
on Saturday night of Rose Cup Weekend. The Rose Cup Race also saw great action with Frank Emmett
beating everyone to the checkered flag to take his third consecutive Rose Cup Race win.

Out of region points are due by September 22!!
L OUD P EDAL
July 2002, Page 27
To the Editor:
It has always been true that the rewards of racing are often
found off the track. The friends, family, and teamwork that we
take for granted are incredibly important. Last weekend at the
Double National, with our attempt to get enough finishes on the
books to qualify for the Runoffs at risk, we were reminded.
Steve Cook gave us an ignition pickup ( he didn't "need it, and it
made his day" to see it go to good use! ). Ken Murillo offered
parts and help. Dave Rugh loaned an ignition module to try. Tom
Neely hooked us up with ProFormance Racing, who loaned us
an engine hoist, no questions asked. Our sons, "Jock" and Alex,
drove to Portland and back to get the spare motor. Dan Hall and
Gordon Jones worked until 10:30 Saturday night to help swap
motors, because they "didn't have anything better to do". And of
course, Norton was always around to lean on!

No matter the final outcome of the race itself, that's pretty cool
stuff.
Thanks to all of you, and to the workers who make it possible
for us all to play!
