MODERN RECESSED LIGHTING

Are you looking for a new and
inexpensive way to update the
appearance of your home?
MODERN RECESSED LIGHTING
Clean and modern, recessed lighting is made up of three parts:
1. A decorative trim
2. A housing or "can" to hold the bulb
3. The bulb itself!
Try replacing your existing lights with
recessed lighting. Use recessed
lighting to highlight specific areas in a
room or to accentuate decorative
elements. Since the lights are hidden,
the ceiling lines are not broken and
your rooms feel more open and
spacious.

Recessed Lighting Basics
Recessed Lighting can be
used in combination with
other light fixtures to add
needed light to a room
when one fixture just isn't
enough. All you need is a
housing and a trim!
RECESSED BULBS
Your choice of recessed bulbs will be determined by how you will be using your room space and how bright you want it
to be. Here are a few of the choices.
Standard A Bulbs These common household bulbs are the least expensive choice for recessed lighting. This type
provides a warm incandescent light that is good for general lighting and wall washing effects. Standard bulbs require a
reflector to boost the light and are best used with a clear alzac "A" lamp multiplier.
"R" Lamps feature a built-in reflector that helps cast a warm, incandescent light in either flood or spot patterns. Slightly
more expensive than a standard lamp, it is the most commonly found type in residential recessed fixtures. It can be
used with most trim types for general, task or accent lighting.
Halogen PAR Bulbs provide a whiter, brighter light than a regular "R" bulb along with a more controlled beam spread.
They can be used with most trim types for general, task or accent effects.
Low Voltage MR16 Halogen These offer the best features of the bulbs listed above. They have the best color
spectrum for accenting room objects or walls, produce more lumens per watt that a standard bulb, offer a variety of
beam spreads and have a longer life than incandescent types. A transformer is required, so make sure you select from
our low voltage housings to ensure a correct match.
Q: How many fixtures do I need?
A: That will depend on the room size and function along with the recessed lighting fixtures you
choose to use. In general, for standard 8 foot ceilings, 100 watt recessed lighting fixtures will be
spaced 2 feet apart. 150 watt recessed lighting fixtures will be spaced 3 feet apart when using
Par or R-Type bulbs or 4 feet apart when using standard “A-type” bulbs.
Q: What size recessed trims should I use?
A: This is more of an aesthetics question and will depend on personal style and feel of the room.
For smaller rooms 3-4 inch recessed trims will fit the space well. Larger rooms that also have
higher ceilings can use 5-8 inch recessed trims. Directional spot trims are perfect for illuminating
walls or art work since light can be re-directed if needed.
