Why a residential retreat in the mountains? Residential retreats offer tremendous benefits to organizations of any size. This type of investment in both your staff and your organization has far-reaching implications: • It builds morale. Much like the renewing benefits of a welltimed vacation, going on a corporate retreat allows your staff to renew their enthusiasm and excitement for work. • It genuinely forges bonds between your team members. When you spend time together at a retreat center, your staff will participate in activities they can talk about when normal work life resumes. This allows them to genuinely get to know each other and develop authentic friendships based on shared experiences. This new found common ground will also increase their connection to your organization, decreasing expensive turnover rates. • It provides valuable training. The retreat environment is the perfect place to develop creativity, teamwork, problemsolving and other valuable skills that result in increased productivity for your organization. You can use the skill building training obtained during your retreat as a way to focus in-office training efforts throughout the year. • It can help acclimate new team members. New and recently hired members of your team will find it much easier to gain confidence and comfort with other staff in a relaxed retreat setting. This can decrease the amount of time needed to help a new staff member feel part of the team, allowing him/her to begin effective work sooner. Partner with Kanuga and book a residential retreat for your organization today. We make the process easy by handling all of the support services and meeting logistics. Protecting the mountain valley we call home Since its founding Kanuga has practiced and taught environment stewardship and conservation. Finding ways to reduce Kanuga’s carbon footprint is an extension of our core values. We take pride in our conscious use of resources and continually strive to find ways for improvement in this important initiative. Examples of our past and future green initiatives: • Our beautiful Chapel of the Transfiguration was built using timber felled during a large storm in 1938; the wood was milled on property and stored for later use. • Furniture, still in use today, was originally built in the early 1900s using wood felled and milled on property. • In the mid-1990s Kanuga completed a massive energy saving project by installing roof insulation and thermopane windows in the Kanuga Lake Inn, which was originally built in 1968. • The solar thermal water heating system on the Kanuga Lake Inn and 10 other buildings across our campus removes the need to burn more than 15,000 gallons of propane annually in the heating of 1.5 million gallons of water. The resulting reduction in Kanuga’s carbon footprint is comparable to planting 20,000 trees. • Kanuga’s dining hall serves seasonal locally-grown produce whenever possible, including produce grown in Kanuga’s own organic garden. • Whenever Kanuga constructs new buildings on property trees removed to clear the land are milled on site and used in that building’s construction, often as siding. • In 2008, a total of 3,785 compact fluorescent light bulbs were installed across the campus, realizing an energy savings of more than $1,000 a month. • Guests are encouraged to re-use towels during their stay to reduce water and power consumption. This is, of course, optional. • In 2014, the entire campus is undergoing a large-scale conversion from propane to natural gas. This conversion will provide more efficient heating and a reliable supply of hot water (using on demand, tank-less water heaters) to lodging, program buildings, kitchens and staff housing. • In keeping with Kanuga’s long-range plan, the organization continues to effectively reduce paper consumption throughout our operation, though internal reduction and strategic initiatives with our website and digital publications. Professional team-building expertise, readily available Team building has long been recognized as a dominate tool to dramatically enhance staff engagement with your organization and to bring team members closer together. Invest in your team and let Kanuga organize team-building events or activities for your next event. Ready, set, let’s go! Traverse the “lava” river, or navigate your way to lunch using only a map and compass. These are just two simple examples of teambuilding activities led by Kanuga’s outdoor facilitators. Other options include our low and high-ropes courses and 50-foot climbing tower. These tools help facilitate individual or group challenges as well as teamwork exercises. All team-building exercises are designed specifically for each client group and based on the physical ability of the participants. Once the scenarios are presented to the team by a Kanuga facilitator, the team attempts to solve the assigned task. After completion of the task, the facilitator will debrief the entire group on the completed exercise, highlighting leadership skills, team work, and other group dynamics observed during the activity. Working together in a fun and interactive way underlines the importance of teamwork and can create “aha” moments that will continue to benefit the group long after you leave Kanuga. Such activities also encourage staff to interact and communicate in a different way, leading to a more dynamic understanding of each other and the group. Team-building can heighten staff morale levels, making your team happier and ultimately more productive. Click here to contact our staff and begin planning your event at Kanuga.
