PQF active filters with extrusion and moulding machines
Power Quality solution for a Belgian plastic industry
ABB solution
One ABB PQFS active filter was installed in the processing
plant substation and it was connected in such a way that only
the most critical load is filtered. The ABB active filter will only
remove the harmonic pollution of the first moulding machine
as per the figure below.
A Belgian plastic manufacturer faced
technical problems and black outs in
its installation due to too high harmonic
pollution and asked ABB to solve its
problems.
The customer is specialised in the manufacturing of rigid
plastic items such as bottles, canisters or technical parts by
extrusion and blow moulding technology. Its products are
used in a wide range of applications: chemicals, phytochemicals, body care, cosmetics, food, toys etc).

Customer benefits
The ABB PQF filter improved the power quality of the total installation and reduced the harmonic pollution down to
acceptable level. The customer solved nearly all its misfiring
and blackout problems.
−− Reduction of the total harmonic current distortion THDI
from 28.5% to 8.4%
−− Reduction of the total harmonic voltage distortion THDV on
the 400V side from 6.6% down to 5%
It should be noted that the network quality on the 400V level
could be further improved by installing PQF active filters on
the other extrusion and blow moulding machines.
Blow moulding machine
The ABB active filters can also perform cos phi compensation. However in this case it was not necessary since the
customer performs a global compensation at medium voltage
level. So the active filter must only focus on harmonic mitigation.

ABB technology
PQF active filters offer excellent filtering efficiency and best
accuracy on harmonic mitigations thanks to ABB’s innovative
hardware and software development. Especially ABB PQF are
the sole in the market to filter with close loop control system
for unsurpassed performance. PQF is the leading active filter
solution for both industrial and commercial or residential loads
harmonic issues.
Key features of PQF Active Filters
