CALIFORNIA SCHOLARSHIP
MEMBERSHIP GUIDELINES AND APPLICATION
Chapter #334
CSF Advisors: Ms. Schonauer and Ms. Martin
CSF Application times: September 1-30 and February 1 -28 each year. In September, students should refer to the 2 nd semester
grades from the previous academic year. In February, students should refer to the 1 st semester grades issued in January. If the
deadline should fall on a weekend, paper applications should be turned in on the last school day of the application period. Students
can email a PDF of a completed application and pay dues on the web store until 11:59 p.m. on the deadline. No late applications or
payments are accepted. CSF Membership is neither automatic nor compulsory. The student must apply for membership during the
application period. Membership is based on semester grades from the prior semester. Students who are members for at least 4
semesters using grades earned in 10th, 11th and 12th grades will be awarded Life Membership (Seal-bearer) status. To qualify
for CSF, the guidelines below must be followed:
1. Based on the previous semester grades, applicants must earn a minimum of 10 points from the CSF approved lists (See the
reverse side of this page.)
a. The first 4 points must be from List I.
b. The first 7 points (including the four points described above) must be from List I or II.
c. The remaining points may come from any Lists (I, II, or III).
2. Applicants may use no more than 5 courses to qualify for CSF membership.
3. No CSF points are given for physical education, subjects repeated to improve a grade, student assistant, or office assistant
positions.
4. CSF points are granted as follows:
a. A grade of A = 3 CSF points.
b. A grade of B = 1 CSF point
One additional point shall be granted for a grade of A or B in an AP or Honors course, up to a maximum of two such
points per semester.
c. A grade of C = 0 points.
d. A grade of D or F in any course makes a student ineligible for that semester.
5. Application for membership must be submitted each semester a student is eligible. Membership Application forms are
accepted ONLY during the current registration period. No late or retro-active applications will be accepted.
6. Requirements for becoming a Life Member (Seal-bearer) are as follows:
a. CSF membership in at least 4 semesters starting with grades earned in sophomore year
b. One of these semesters must be from grades earned your senior year. (Note: Grades from 2nd semester senior year
can be used as the 4th semester for Life membership, but it may not be possible for those grades to be verified in time
for recognition at Senior Awards night.)
c. Freshman year does not count toward Life Membership.
CSF FAQ
What is CSF? CSF is a statewide organization to honor outstanding high school students for their academic achievements.
Do I get a scholarship for being in CSF? Being in CSF does not guarantee that you will get a monetary scholarship, but
membership is something that you can put on your list of awards and activities and those who have met the requirements for Life
Membership (Seal-bearer) status will be recognized at Senior Awards night.
Why do we pay membership dues? The CSF state organization charges AHS membership dues in order to belong to their academic
honor society. The dues also cover the cost of awards given at Senior Awards night.
What happens if the deadline is on a weekend? If the 15th should fall on a weekend, paper applications should be turned in on the
last school day of the application period. Students can email a PDF of a completed application to an advisor and pay dues on the web
store until 11:59 p.m. on the 15th.
The following excerpts were taken from the CSF website, www.csf-cjsf.org:
What happens if I miss the membership deadline? Membership is neither automatic nor compulsory. The By-Laws (Article IV,
Section 2) and every chapter’s mandatory Standing Rules (Article III, Section 3) require that the eligible student actually apply for
membership, and retroactive membership (after the deadline) is prohibited. Excuses such as forgetting to apply, inability to find
one’s report card in a timely fashion, failing to heed school announcements about the application period, absence on the last
day of the application period, and other mundane excuses are not acceptable.
What is a lifetime member and what kind of awards may I get? The requirements for Life Member (also called “Seal-bearer”) are
stated above. The REQUIRED awards for Life Members are the pin and the embossing of the chapter seal on the diploma.
Additional items, such as a tassel may be given, depending on funds available.
