An Expedition to the North Pole The first British explorer to travel a new route across the Antarctic to the South Pole, since Shackleton 100 years ago NORTH POLE April 2016 SOUTH POLE NEW ROUTE November 2016 - January 2017 Creating a Chapter in Antarctic History The first British explorer to travel a new route across the Antarctic to the South Pole, since Shackleton 100 years ago Firstly during April 2016, Rob Smith, will be undertaking a 220km expedition to the North pole over a period of 23 days. With hard work, training and dedication, Rob will then be undertaking the second part of the expedition goal, a completely new route through the Antarctic to the South Pole. With Eric Philips, OAM and three other individuals, from November 2016 to January 2017, the group will be venturing across the Antarctic on a new route, which will be announced one week before the voyage commences. This will be the first time since Sir Ernest Shackleton, 100 years ago, that a British explorer has attempted a new route to the South Pole. Biography - Rob Smith Rob Smith, 42, has a 10 year old daughter, is a lover of Rugby and has been an IT sales professional for over twenty years predominantly in the Insurance industry. Three years ago, Rob’s best friend, Neil, was diagnosed with Oesophagus and Lung Cancer and given only a few weeks to live. Sadly, Neil passed away in 2012 leaving a wife and new born baby. Just over a month later, Rob’s mother Maureen passed away after a twenty-five-year battle with multiple cancers. One month after, Rob then found himself diagnosed with Cancer. Having undergone battle, surgery and chemotherapy and an extensive 2-year Rob eventually overcame the disease. The realisation had then kicked in about how much we should value our health and wellbeing and also that we, as a community, should fight back against this disease. Rob began searching for new hobbies and ways to push himself and also a way to help Cancer Research raise the money needed to banish Cancer. That is when he found Icetrek and, more importantly, Eric Philips. Eric Philips Eric Philips is a polar adventurer dedicated to exploring the vast and varied ice landscapes that typify our polar regions. His outdoor career spans more than 25 years during which time he has worked professionally as an IPGA Polar Guide, outdoor educator, film maker, motivational speaker, team facilitator and musician. His most eminent expedition was in 2013 where he guided the Commonwealth Team in the South Pole Allied Challenge. This included a 200km trek to the South Pole with wounded soldiers and the expedition Patron, Prince Harry. Cancer Research UK is a cancer research and awareness charity in the United Kingdom, formed on 4 February 2002 by the merger of The Cancer Research Campaign and the Imperial Cancer Research Fund. Its aim is to reduce the number of deaths from cancer. As the world’s largest independent cancer research charity it conducts research into the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of the disease. Research activities are carried out in institutes, universities and hospitals across the UK, both by the charity’s own employees and by its grantfunded researchers. It also provides information about cancer and runs campaigns aimed at raising awareness of the disease and influencing public policy. Given the scale of these expeditions, the opportunity exists to raise money for another charity. So, as a thank you to the headline sponsor, we will be able to raise money for another charity of their choice. We would integrate the charity into the marketing and events campaign, giving leverage to their brand and also promoting their cause during communications. All money raised will be split between the two charities. ‘‘ We are weak, writing is difficult, but for my own sake I do not regret this journey, which has shown that Englishmen can endure hardships, help one another, and meet death with as great a fortitude as ever in the past.
