News of the DCGS
October
Highlights from the DCGS Board Meeting
The Defiance Public Library has notified the
board of their form for accepting items from the public/other institutions. A thank-you was received from
the Defiance Public Library for our reprinting of two
documents and the donation of other items. Cecelia
will meet with the new adult services head to answer
questions we have and to see what we can offer the
library. Due to a lack of interest, the October help
session at the Defiance Library was cancelled. We
will try another date in the spring.
There were problems sending out the last
newsletter as 13 with good addresses came back.
Second and third tries were done via Yahoo and then
most of the rest went through using the Sherwood
telephone site. Members are urged to contact Mary
Williams, editor of the newsletter, if an issue has not
been received. Generally newsletters will come out
around March 15, June 15, September 1, and January 15.
The board will extend invitations to the four 4H students who had taken genealogy projects to join
the chapter free of charge. They will also be encouraged to attend the spring genealogy help session.
Highlights from the DCGS Chapter Meeting
Nineteen members and guests attended the
2014 banquet. Inducted into First Families of Defiance county were Lura Jeffrey, Donna Smith, Dawn
Hasch, and Sharon Smith. Each of the inductees provided highlights of their families. One of Lura Jeffrey's
Defiance County ancestors was Peter Dickman who
was an early blacksmith in Brunersburg. Dawn
Hasch's German immigrant to Defiance County,
Jacob Wolfrum, was a shoemaker who lived next door
to Peter Dickman in Brunersburg. Donna Smith read
a newspaper account of her early ancestor, Catherine
Ridenour, which detailed the loneliness and hardships
that the early women settlers faced. Sharon Dey Smith
told of some of the early Dey family in America. Her
Defiance County ancestor was Samuel Dey who
came to Brunersburg in 1855. Dey Road and Dey
Bridge, which has been placed on the National Register of Historical Places, were named after this ancestor family.
Following the inductions, membership chair,
Dianne Kline, showed three large portraits which have
been given to the chapter of the Stork, Wiler, and
Parmer families of Defiance County. Dianne gave
brief bios of the individuals with the hope that someone of the families might claim the photographs.
A moment of silence was held to honor
member Pat Rashley who had passed away in the
last year.
November
Highlights from the DCGS Chapter Meeting
Twenty-two members and guests were present
for the November 24 chapter meeting. Pat Wise
moved that our chapter pledge an additional $400
toward a second microfilm reader at the Defiance
Public Library. Marilyn Mallott seconded the motion
which then passed. There is now $1000 designated
for a second reader.
Bob Bower questioned whether the chapter
might make some of its publications available in CD
format or whether they might be downloaded from
our web site. President Brown noted that it would be
discussed at a board meeting.
Following the business meeting, chapter members Dan Hasch and Mary Williams presented the
program, Sherwood Spiritualism Revisited. Spiritualism is the belief that the deceased can be contacted
through trained mediums. In the U. S. the movement gained momentum when the Fox sisters of New
York began traveling across the country. The movement came to the Defiance area when Thomas
Wentworth brought the belief to the Hicksville area in
the late 1800s.
In 1907 thirty acres in the eastern part of the
village of Sherwood was purchased. In 1910 an auditorium was built, and spiritualist speakers were
brought in as far as the East Coast with programs
including séances and healing sessions. The name
Crystal Fountain was derived from the sulfur fountain
on the premises which supposedly had healing waters.
Later the auditorium was also available for use by the
public for dances and even later for skating. A swimming pool was built and made available for the public
to use. Also on the acreage was a home for the president, a dormitory and a few cottages.
The movement came to an end in Sherwood
when the acreage and buildings were sold to the village for one dollar in 1994.

Death of Notable
Pioneer- Lyman
Langdon
Good, Old Man of Noble Township
Ends His Race
Article from an early Defiance newspaper)
Lyman Langdon, one of the most notable
pioneers of the Maumee Valley died at his some
in Noble Township at midnight Sunday, August
19, 1900. HE was born at South Canton, St.
Lawrence County, New York, on September 19,
1809, and lacked just 20 days from being 91 years
old when he passed away.
At the age of 29 Lyman married Fannie
Marie Sanford. Ten children resulted from that
Union. Those living are Lucia A. Langdon of
Noble Township, Mrs. Adeline Breidenbaugh of
Toledo, Emma B. Sheffield of Noble Township,
Almira Sisco of Kansas, and Grace E. Reid of Van
Wert.
In 1835 Mr. Langdon came to Ohio, driving through from Cleveland in a wagon and settling in what was then Williams County. He passed
through this city [Defiance] which was then a town
of 150 people. He found acquaintances from St.
Lawrence County already living here as follows:
J. W. Moore, Erskine Perkins, Edwin Phellps, Wm
A. Brown, Amos Stoddard, and other friends. He
located land with Dr. Oney Rice and Jacob Conkey
near Farmer Center. On Sept. 16, 1836 he sold
his possessions in New York and with his wife
and one child drove through Ohio in a wagon,
accompanied by his wife’s brother, Seneca E.
Sanford. He reached this city after being on the
Page 46 Yesteryears’Trails - Defiance Co. Winter 2014
road 22 days.
On January 25, 1837, he rented Payne C.
Parker’s hotel at Georgetown [now Ney] and it
has become one of the most notable places on
northwestern Ohio. That same year he and Horatio
G. Phillips bought four lots on Clinton Street from
Gen. John G. Hunt for $3,000 between First and
Front Streets.
In 1838 Lyman resided in Defiance and was
elected justice of the peace, and he also was appointed county judge replacing Bishop Adams,
who had moved to Henry County.
Late in 1841, after the canal had been completed, he sold his property here to Samuel Rohn
and C. I. Trude and bought the fame in Noble
Township from Addison Goodyear. He moved
there in April 1842 and remained there until his
death.
After the formation of Defiance County
[1845], and in 1849 he went into the retail business with Horace Hilton at the north end of the
Maumee River bridge. He purchased an acre of
land and built a home where the Joseph Ralston
home stood in the early 1900s.
Lyman sold his interest in the store to Mr.
Hilton in 1851 and moved back to his farm in
Noble Township where he built a home in 1852.
He also kept a tavern this place.
On Sept. 18, 1862 Mr. and Mrs. Langdon
celebrated their golden anniversary. Lyman was
a man of broad views, keen perception, strict integrity, and while frugal and simple in his habits,
was the soul of hospitality. HE had a wide acquaintance and his knowledge of the early settlement of the Maumee Valley was not exceeded by
any living soul. He was a grand old man and while
the news of his death will be received with regrets by his friends everywhere, his noble life and
deeds will stand as an imperishable monument of
his goodness.
The funeral was held at the Langdon home
in Noble Township with Rev. Jacobs officiating.
The remains were interred in Riverside Cemetery.
Defiance Motor Trucks to Pass Down the
Streets of Dear Old Shanghai China
Defiance Democrat - December 5, 1918
The Turnbull Motor Truck & Wagon Co.
has received an order for ten motor trucks for
delivery to Shanghai China and also for delivery
of ten trucks to Halifax, Nova Scotia. The local
plant will also ship a truck this week to Porto
Rico.
This Defiance factory is shipping out trucks
every day. Trucks are being shipped to Chicago
and Milwaukee this week.
Officers at the plant say that the export
prospects and that present indications are that
Defiance motor trucks will probably be going to
all parts of the world.
Health Board Issues Order Closing Schools,
Theatres, etc., Because of Inflluenza
Defiance Democrat - October 10, 1918
Notice is hereby given that by an order of
the Board of Health of the City of Defiance, that
all schools, theatres, moving picture shows, dance
halls, and all places of public entertainment where
large number of people congregate, shall be
closed until further notice by the Board of Health.
This order is issued by reason of the unusual prevalence of the disease known as “Spanish Influenza” in the city of Defiance and the
surrounding country. A mild form of this epidemic has existed up to the present time, only one
death having occurred; however, there are quite a
large number of cases in the city.
It is not the intention of the Board to close
the church of the city at this time, but such as
action my become necessary after the meeting of
the State Board of Health in Columbus which will
be held on the 10th day of October. [Later the
churches were closed.]
People should try to cooperate with the
Board of Health in preventing the disease from
spreading by avoiding public gatherings.
The most dangerous form of human contact in the presence of epidemic influenza is, in all
probability, that with coughers and sneezers.
Coughing and Sneezing, except behind a handkerchief, is as great a sanitary offense as promiscuous
spitting and should be equally condemned.
J. D. Westrick, Health Officer
The Great Flu Pandemic 1918-1919
http://www.flu.gov/
http://www.ohiohistorycentral.org/
“Officials in Ohio were overwhelmed by the
pandemic. The state finally managed to file its first
report on October 26, 1918. In this report, they indicated that there were at least 125,000 cases in the
state on October 18th. The disease had undoubtedly
been prevalent in the state for some time before that
date. During the week of October 26th, there were
1,541 deaths from influenza alone. Because officials
had a difficult time collecting data, these figures were
probably inaccurate. It seems likely that the real
number of cases and deaths was much higher.
“Cleveland was especially hard hit by the pandemic. During the first weeks of the pandemic, the
state reported roughly 168 deaths from influenza per
week. By the third week of the pandemic, the city's
death rate had soared, with 682 deaths from influenza being reported each week. Dayton suffered
greatly from the pandemic as well, with a high of
137 deaths registered there during the third week of
the pandemic. By late October, Cincinnati was under siege as well, reporting 22,000 cases of influenza.”
“In Ohio, Camp Sherman was affected more
by the epidemic than any other training camp in the
nation. The disease swept through the camp in the
late summer and early fall. Almost twelve hundred
men died at Camp Sherman before the epidemic
ended.”

Henry and Kate Kurso (Spelling may differ.) and the two children they adopted, Estella and Clyde, are
picured below. The pictures were taken in Defiance, Ohio, and were in the Baker family album that
Phyllis Toler has. She believes the date would be around 1891. She would like any information on this
family. Phyllis is researching the Clemens family from the Defiance area (See the page 50.)as well as
her Baker family (See page 49). If you have any information, please use the chapter email or postal
box, and the information will be forwrded to her.
