Liebert Precision Cooling Strategy
Strategies for Energy Efficiency
How do we get the most out of the
cooling equipment?
4 Strategies
1. Maximize the Temperature Back to the Cooling Unit
2. Match Cooling Capacity & Airflow with the IT Equipment
3. System Design to Reduce Component Power
4. Use Networking and Monitoring Tools So Units Can
Work Together
1. Maximize the Temperature Back to
the Cooling Unit
---- Chilled Water CRAC ---- Direct Expansion CRAC
 Higher return air temperatures
increases the cooling unit capacity
 Higher Precision Cooling unit ΔT &
SHR
 Recovers stranded capacity
 Efficiency gain from 15% to 20%
Steps - Actions that maintain Cooling Reliability:
1. Controlled separation of Hot and Cold air streams
 Perimeter Cooling
 Row Cooling
2. Move to Supply Air temperature control
 Return Air Temperature control is now meaningless
 Precision is controlling the air temperature to the servers
 Liebert is the sole leader in this control technology
2. Manage the Airflow to the Server
Too Much Flow – Waste of Energy
Too Much Little – Unreliable
Under floor Pressure
control or just supply
only control
16
2. Match Cooling Capacity & Airflow with
the IT Equipment
 Eliminate the excess airflow by controlling the cooling
capacity and the supply airflow independently
Cooling Unit Capacity (kW) = Server Load (kW)
Cooling Unit Airflow = Server Airflow
 Efficiency benefit of 10% to 15%

3. System Design to Reduce Component

Liebert XD - at the
source with smaller fans
or no fans results in:
1. Fan component – 65%
to 100% lower
2. System benefit of 25%
3. System Design to Reduce
Component Power
B.
Minimized Compressor hours of operation with Economization modes
 Location and Data Center operating condition dependant
 Wide range of benefits from 12% to 35% on the system
 Use the TCO model to make the right choice
4. Use Networking and Monitoring
Tools So Units Can Work Together
Teamwork: In operation

Use monitoring and optimization tools to improve efficiency

Benefits of cooling units working together
–
Share data between multiple units to ensure that servers only get
what they need
–
Avoid conflict between units, i.e. disallow dehumidification if
humidification is the proper operation

Containment Comparison
<<Without containment
With containment>>
22
Smart Aisle Overview
• Smart Aisle is a control mode that allows iCOM to manage air flow
and cooling capacity independently.
• Smart Aisle is a server centric solution meaning that it focuses on the
inlet temperature to the servers
• As the environment changes due to server utilization, equipment
location changes and outside variables so does the iCOM controller
• Adapts from no containment to end containment to full containment
23
Cold Aisle Containment - SmartAisle™
Integrated Containment Benefits
Control with iCOM
Match Cooling and Airflow to IT
equipment delta T to eliminate waste
iCOM will vary the fan speed independently with Liebert DS and Liebert CW to
match server ΔT to eliminate bypass air
Other benefits
Higher rack density ~ 12kW
Recover stranded cooling capacity
Less dependant on open floor tile placement
