town was saddened Sunday
morning when residents learned that a six-year-old boy died
in a tragic fire that swept across the upper floor of the
Cashbah Hotel, 15 Main Ave.,
Saturday night
Firemen responded to t h e
10:31 police call and Fire
Chief Ronnie Cole called for
help from all area towns. There
were nine hose lines on the
flaming hotel. The roof caved
in around midnight. Firemen
had the conflagration under
control shortly after 1 A.M.
The funeral service for
Charles (Chaz) Swierzinski,
the boy who died from smoke
inhalation, was held last night
(Wednesday) at the
Ocean
Grove Memorial Home. A funeral mass and interment will
take place in Jersey
City,
where the boy's father, Charles I. Zwierzinski, resides.
The cause of the blaze, whether arson or not, is still under
investigation. Fire started in a
•fourth floor rear area where no
one resides, where work creating an apartment had been
halted a year ago.
Mrs. Nancy Swierzinski, her
son Charles and a daughter
from her first marriage, 13year-old Dawn Schell, resided
in the fourth floor room. The
children's grandmother, MrsAgnes Kaminski, occupied a
downstairs apartment and 8yearold Miichei'le Swierzinski
ilived with her grandmother.
The boy had been with them
earlier in the evening a n d
when he fell asleep watching
TV he was put to bed in his
fourth floor room. It was Michelle's birthday and she and
her mother were out of the hotel for a brief time, getting ice
cream and soda.
As the fire spread, smoke
engulfed the hotel and firemen crawling along the fourth
floor hall were unable to
reach the boy who was calling
for help. By the time an aerial
ladder was extended to his
room to bring him out, he had
suffocated

More than 20 other guests
were unharmed in their rapid
exodus from the hotel. Guests
of the adjoining 'Main Ave.
House were evacuated until
the fire was under control.
Mrs. Swierzinski her two
two daughters and her mother
are staying at the home of a
neighbor, Mrs. Mary Jane

smoke alarm system in t h e

at the time of the fire but
the electrical fuses to power
the system were disconnected.
The N. J. Dept. of Com*
munity Affairs said Mr. Grieser was cited for 29 safety violations on Nov. 30, 1983. Reinspection in January 1984
noted only 11 of the violations were corrected and h«
was fined $2,500. He failed
to pay and court action is
still pending.

THURSDAY, FEBRUARY 28,
Retrospect
By Richard F. Gibbons
When Ronald Reagan took
the oath of office for a second
term as President of the United States last month, there
was set in motion a cycle of
profound interest to Americans
and to lovers of democracy everywhere.
When this tarm ends in
1989, the United States will
have attained the BICENTENNIAL OF THE PRESIDENCY,
One would hope that America and the world take due
note of this milestone.
Here's the background: The
Constitution of the United
States became a fait accompli
March 4,
1789 after
nine
States had ratified it. Electors
were chosen and George Washington became their unanimous choice for President. He
took the prescribed oath in
1985
OCEAN GROVE AND NEPTUNE TIMES
New York shortly afterward.
Congress and the Supreme
Court, too, date from that timeThus the cycle began. It is
now 196 years later and each
year brings us closer to 1989,
the
PRESIDENTIAL BICENTENNIAL.
That isn't exactly RETROSPECT. But there is no denying
that Ocean Grove is Presidentminded.
Read the Annual Report of
President Stokes for 1875- Of
th Fourth of July celebration
that year 1875 Dr. Stokes re.
ports that Dr. Kynett spoke to
a "vast congregation" on Sunday, the Fourth. Next day, a
new flag was raised at t h e
foot of Ocean Pathway. Joseph
Thornley read the Declaration
of Independence and President
Stokes delivered the oration.
(This wculd have been at t h e
"Preachers' Stand," a predecessor to the Auditorium).
Dr. Stokes continues, casually: "The 'President of the
United States was present by

names; just "The President of
the United States." Reference,
of course, was to the 18th
President, Ulysses S. Grant.
In that same month, Ocean
Grove celebrated its Sixth Anniversary (now referred to as
Founders' Day).
On Saturday, July 3 1 , "the
stand" was handsomely decorated and an anniversary celebration began with the singing of the Doxology and "a
program of fine music."
Dr. Stokes delivered the historical address. That address
is preserved as the best allaround treatise on the finding
and the founding of Ocean
Grove in 1869.
There was a large congregation on the hundreds of benches facing the preachers'
stand. Bishop Scott had a seat
at President Stokes1 left. There
was "a vacant chair on the
right for the President of the
United States (again no name),
who had been invited and who
arrived during the delivery of
the address."
Ocean Grove was a short
coach ride from President
Grant's Long Branch cottage
and the Civil War hero was
a frequent visitor. The 'President's sister had a cottage
here on Lake Avenue. What
with visits to her and appearances at special! events, General Grant became a familiar
figure in Ocean Grove.
Grant's first term coincided
with the founding of Ocean
Grove. Even after leaving office, he found time to accept
invitations to appear here•He was the first of many
President's to take part in
Ocean Grove programs.
And so we near the PRESIDENTIAL BICENTENNIALWho will be the next President to visit Ocean Grove?
Speaking of anniversaries,

Progress report on yours
truly. Am trying walking with
the boot on, and am hopeful
of getting the cast off on
March 4th. So a few prayers
please, that the doctor will
find everything A No. 1. It
will certairrly make me the
happiest person in the Hills.
Thank you all for the concern.
Thanks to my very good
friends Dory & Byke Holmes,
I now have a 25 foot cord on
the telephone, so I can take
the phone to the far reaches
of the house. If I had t h a t
longer cord earlier, I may have
had the swelling down sooner.
It is a little rough when you
are on your back, with the foot
up in the air and have the
phone ring. Now that the cord
is on, the problem is over. The
other evening \ had a meeting and initiation at the Auxiliary and lo and behold they
had a wheel chair available.

OCFAN GROVE AND NEPTUNE TIMES
EDITOR TIMES:
With this being the 75th anniversary year of the
Boy Scouts of America and all the interest in the his
tory of this important youth movement in this country, I thought that The Times would enjoy publishing
the enclosed photo (above.)
The photo (a xerox copy) shows a group of Ocean
Grove boys from Troop 4 1 attending Chief A. LeRoy
Ward's Neptune Police Reserves first aid course in
1956 or 1957.
In the photo are (left to right): FRONT ROW —
Charles B. Mac Donald, Neptune Twp. civil defense
administrator; Jimmy Ward, Ray Nisner Jr., Billy Taylor, Brant Taylor, Scoutmaster Paul Riley Sr. REAR —
Paul Riley Jr., Ronnie Crane, Don Waddell, youth
(name unknown), Lester Ward and Bill Mackey..
I am now a Cubmaster of Pack 4 3 , Assistant
Scoutmaster of Troop 4 3 and Scouting Coordinator
for the RarHan Club (sponsoring organization) in
ECLIPSE, VA. We have over 150 young people in Girl
and Boy Scouts. I will always appreciate my initial
Scout training and experience in Troop 4 1 , Ocean
Grove.
Apparently it proved to be a very positive ex per
lence as j now have two very active sons and one
daughter in Scouting. I will be attending the Boy
Scout National Jubilee at Fort A. P. Hill in Virginia
this summer.
