Welcome to Basel
On behalf of the Local Committee in
Basel, I’m happy to welcome you to the
PCIC Europe 2005 Conference. Please
note: the clocks tick differently in Basel!
Besides being a lively industrial and
corporate services city, it offers visitors great cultural variety that ranges
from theatre to unusual museums and
collections – not to mention the joys
discovered by taking a stroll through our
charming and well-preserved “old town”.
Basel is home to some of the world’s leading manufacturers of
chemicals and pharmaceuticals. Ever larger production plants are
springing up in and around the city, despite the fact that the companies domiciled here are spreading their production to all the
continents as globalization progresses. Which, of course, throws
the spotlight on the crucial importance of questions relating to
production, equipment, installations, and safety aspects here just
as it does elsewhere.
The chemical and pharmaceutical industries in Basel look back
on a long tradition. It all began in the dye-works of old. In the
course of fabricating and experimenting with their own equipment for dyeing decorative silk ribbons, these enterprises accumulated a great deal of experience in the handling of chemical
substances. Not that Basel was predestined to become a major
chemical industry location: the coal-tar dye industry – and therefore the organic chemical industry – really had its beginnings in
England in 1856. Two years after that, development work began
in Basel with the discovery of the red dyestuff fuchsine. Alexander
Clavel was the first to produce fuchsine, followed by the Ciba
company in Basel in 1859. The same year saw the extract factory
of the Geigy trading company, later J.R. Geigy AG, start producing
coal-tar dyes. Another starting point for the development of the
new industry was the Basel Gasworks.
In 1862 it started distilling its coal tar byproduct to obtain crude
aniline. In 1886 the chemical factory Kern & Sandoz, later to
become Sandoz AG, was established for the production of aniline
dyestuffs. The incipient F. Hoffmann-La Roche AG saw the light
of day in 1896. Basel’s museums and art collections also make
the city well worth visiting. The Basel Public Art Collection, one
of the most impressive in Switzerland, embraces the Museum of
Art (works by K. Witz, H. Holbein the Younger, the Upper Rhine
Swiss school, paintings of the Flemish and Dutch school, Swiss
masters of the 18th–20th centuries, 19th century French painters,
important examples of cubism and classic modern such as Picasso),
the Collection of Copper Engravings and the Museum for Contemporary Art. The Historical Museum shows official relics, pieces
from the Münster treasures, parts of the famed Amerbach
Collection, goldsmithery, musical instruments, and archeological
artefacts from the city’s beginnings and examples of its handicrafts. The most important elements of the renowned Ethnological
Museum and the Swiss Folklore Museum comprise collections
of the art of Oceania, the ancient Americas, Africa and Europe,
as well as the history of textiles. Basel has always boasted, and
still boasts, a strong tradition of art patronage that enables the
city to maintain and keep expanding these collections. One of the
newest museums that illustrates this point is the Jean Tinguely
collection. Influenced by constructivism, the artist transformed
his earlier wire-based reliefs into bizarre machines with the aid of
mechanical kinetics.
What’s more, this year’s PCIC Conference also coincides with the
Basel’s traditional Autumn Fair (Herbstmesse). In the year 1471,
German king Friedrich III granted Basel the right to hold two
fairs every year. Only the Autumn Fair has survived – with merrygo-rounds, all sorts of rides, and stalls selling everything under
the sun at five different locations in the city. Our conference hotel
is situated at one of them, Exhibition Square.
I’m looking forward to seeing you at the PCIC Conference. Besides
contributing to our conference, perhaps you’ll find the time to
appreciate some of our city’s many cultural aspects.
Peter Thurnherr
The PCIC-Europe Conference 2005
The Petroleum and Chemical Industry
Committee Europe (PCIC Europe) invites
you to attend the second conference in
Basle (Switzerland), on October 26 – 28,
2005.
The first PCIC Europe Conference took
place in 2004 in Basle, Switzerland.
More than 160 participants visited the
conference and the end of Conference
questionnaire also highlighted the wish
of the participants to continue the PCIC
Conference as an annual event. The path
for the coming years of the PCIC conference has been paved and will lead the Conference to The Netherlands (2006), France (2007), Spain (2008) and Germany (2009).
This roadmap will put a heavy burden on the shoulders of the
members of the PCIC-Europe Executive and Technical Committee,
but we have a vision and a mission to accomplish this.
The mission of PCIC Europe is:
The vision of PCIC Europe is:
The PCIC Europe Conference wants to be the premier European forum for the exchange of experience of practical applications of electrical and instrumentation technology in the
Petroleum, Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industry (PCI).
The Call for Paper for 2005 has been extremely successful in
terms of 59 papers, which have been received. The Technical
Committee had the difficult task to select 28 papers for the conference, but succeeded with honours.
Your are kindly invited to register for the Conference and also
to include into your calendar the next PCIC-Europe Conference,
which will take place in The Netherlands, 7 – 9 June, 2006.
– To hold the European Conference on Electrical and Instrumentation Applications in the Petroleum, Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industry (PCI)
– To support the exchange of experience and information among
experts from suppliers, application, science and authorities
– To promote technology trends relating to electrical and instrumentation technology in the Petroleum, Chemical and Pharmaceutical Industry (PCI)
– To sponsor appropriate European guidelines
– To provide opportunities for professional development
– To stimulate the technological and the economical progress.
René Ouëndag
Introduction to the technical
programme
The success of a technical conference
depends essentially on the quality of the
papers that are presented. In addition
to a careful selection of the proposed
abstracts, the PCIC Executive & Technical Committee provides peer review
of all papers to be presented at the
conference. This selection & review
process helps ensure that the papers will
be of high quality and of interest to the
participants.
In order to achieve a good balance between end users, engineering companies, regulatory bodies and manufacturers, authors
are invited to propose papers corresponding to the topics listed
below as pertaining to the Petroleum (Oil & Gas Exploration, Production Refining), Petrochemical, Chemical and Pharmaceutical
Industries:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
Safety in the Workplace
Experiences from Users with Regulations and Standards
Electrical and Instrumentation (E&I) Engineering Practices
Equipment, Systems and Components
Operation, Maintenance, Repair, Asset Management and Qualification of Personnel
Our industry is undergoing constant change at an ever accelerating rate. Participation in the PCIC-Europe Conference is one
of the most effective means of getting the information needed
in order to best cope with changing regulations and a modified
business landscape.
