Prescolite’s Virtual Source® optics for
Architektūr downlights have fundamentally
changed the way optical performance is
measured and observed. Virtual Source
represents a unique, proven approach to
reflector technology as it is the first
studied application of ergonomic design
in downlighting.
4
Virtual Source® reflectors exhibit unique
lamp image flow. The passive lower
reflector always fills logically and smoothly
with light, at a rate constant to the viewer’s
movements. The result is quiet,
unobtrusive downlighting by design.

NON-PRESCOLITE OPTICAL DESIGN
MEANS VISUAL NOISE
Traditional Optical Design
(Non-Prescolite)
T4 compact fluorescent lamps are tubular and therefore
not symmetrical in the horizontal position. They have
different relative physical cutoff (and thereby optical cutoff)
between 0° and 90°. Consequently, horizontally mounted
compact fluorescent lamps in a non-Virtual Source®
reflector result in “visual noise” that lighting designers find
objectionable (see fig. 1 on opposite page).
Prescolite’s
Virtual Source Optical Design
U.S. Patent No. 5,918,969
Prescolite’s optical designer deviated from the standard
design and engineered a “transition line” that separates
the upper and lower portions of the reflector (see fig. 2 on
opposite page). As a result, the cut-off is derived from the
transition line, not the lamp(s). The active upper reflector
section is called the Virtual Source, or “glowy top.” The
effect emulates a round glowing shape, similar to an
R-lamp. The lower section is intentionally designed to be
inactive until the viewer is able to distinguish the active
top section as a distinct optical element.

THE
VIRTUAL
SOURCE
CONCEPT
NON-PRESCOLITE® OPTICAL DESIGN
=VISUAL NOISE
The promise: Parallel cutoff (between
the optical and physical cutoff)
The Result:
Symmetrical Cutoff
®
Virtual Source downlights
will have the same cutoff
angle in all lateral planes
because the transition line in
the reflector defines the
cutoff angle. Symmetrical
cutoff will yield downlights
with the same appearance
regardless of how the viewer
approaches the downlight,
whether the lamp is
vertically or horizontally
mounted.
R1
R2
The reason it is impossible: The
horizontally mounted compact
fluorescent lamp is asymmetrical. When
the optical cutoff reflects light out of the
reflector at angles higher than the
physical cutoff, side angle glare is
created.
Typical downlights derive a
significant amount of their
efficiency above the 40º
zone, resulting in direct
glare. Prescolite’s Virtual
Source optics deliver most
of their light in the 0º-40º
zone, which results in more
task illumination where you
need it and downlights that
are both efficient and
effective (see fig. 3).

HID
H I G H
L I G H T I N G
Architectural lighting designers are constantly
challenged by two opposing design requirements:
reducing operating costs to meet ever stricter
government energy efficiency regulations, and at
the same time, providing appropriate light levels
in an architectural space. Couple this dilemma
with the challenges of effectively lighting and
maintaining difficult high ceiling applications such
as theatres, atria, and airports, and the need for
selecting the right luminaire solution
becomes evident.
To meet these intense interior design challenges,
Prescolite offers the Architektūr series of HID
downlight luminaires. Newer technology HID
lamps, such as ceramic arc-tube metal halide
provide long lamp life and remarkably high
efficacy, all in a compact source for excellent
optical control. Architektūr HID luminaires
capitalize on this new technology, featuring
multiple socket positions for medium or wide
distribution, precision Virtual Source® reflector
technology, modular plug-in ballasts, adjustable
mounting brackets, and diecast aluminum heat
sinks for superior thermal control. Prescolite also
offers Architektūr luminaires for standard quartz
arc-tube metal halide lamps or open fixtures for
new internally shielded metal halide lamps. As a
result of these new options and technologies,
designers are using the advantages of new HID
luminaires in applications that were never
before possible.

Whether it is luminaires designed for new amalgam triple tube compact
fluorescent, new ceramic arc metal halide, or halogen incandescent sources,
Prescolite is always at the forefront of new product design. Prescolite works closely
with all major lamp manufacturers during their new product development
processes so that our new luminaires capitalize on these new sources and can be
introduced simultaneously. Designers who choose Architektūr series products can
rest assured that these luminaires have been rigorously designed, constructed, and
optically engineered for each new lamp type. This results in controlled light output,
maximized efficiency, and improved visual comfort.

Innovation is part of Prescolite’s heritage. Prescolite® LED
lighting is a keynote example of this innovation, designed
to bring the revolutionary benefits of cutting edge LED
technology to your lighting projects. Rest assured, as LED
lighting continues to improve, Prescolite will be integrating
the latest LED improvements into our products. Some of
the advantages of LED lighting include; higher light output
per watt than incandescent lighting, self contained colors
without the use of external filters, focused light without the
use of external reflectors, consistent color temperature
when dimming, more durable on/off cycling, being solid
state it is less susceptible to external shock damage, very
long life – 50,000 hours at 70% maintained lumen output,
burnout is slow and not abrupt as in incandescent lamps,
instant start up, small size.

T4.MINI:
The T4 Mini provides clean white light, easily
dimmable with a standard slider, it also has a smaller
filiment size which allows good optic control, and is
available in high wattages and has longer life than
standard incandescent lamps.
STANDARD MR16:
Standard MR16 lamps provide a cleaner, whiter
illumination versus standard incandescent sources.
Available in a wide variety of beam spreads and
wattages, MR16’s provide a smooth, round beam for
effective accent lighting.
HIR MR16:
HIR (halogen infrared) technology utilizes an infrared
reflective coating that redirects a small portion of
infrared heat back onto the filament to increase light
output. Lamps with HIR technology are up to 30%
more energy efficient than standard MR16’s. The 37
watt HIR lamp has comparable light output verses a
standard 50 watt MR16.
