Opening Doors
Groundbreaking ideas have always opened doors to change. As early as the
late 1950s, industrial designer Leon Yulkowski realized that the fragmented
approach of standard doors and hardware was neither advantageous nor
necessary. His design background drove him to find a new and better way,
which in 1975 became the Total Door line.
While standard pairs of doors involve as many as 15 different manufacturers
and 4 constructions trades, Total Door offers a systems approach with singlesource responsibility. Innovative and flexible, the Total Door system is an
entirely new approach to doors and hardware.

coordination, installation and

alumni accomplishments in industrial design at the Cranbrook Academy
and Art Museum in Bloomfield Hills, Michigan, a pair of Total Doors were
displayed for their innovation and aesthetic design.

Total Door is a complete integrated door system. It eliminates the additional hardware and the typical maintenance and
security problems of standard doors. Our innovative full height, semi-concealed hinge and full height locking channel elegantly

Form Following Function
This is a systems approach.Total Door and its distributors offer single-source responsibility for doors, hardware, installation
and service. Operating grips, locks, levers and exit devices are factory installed, require minimal field labor, and come with
a limited lifetime warranty. Minimal hardware naturally results in lower maintenance. Complete, factory assembly of all
components ensures code compliance.
As a result of the full height design, the door and hinge are quickly and easily installed by one person. Since each Total
Door is custom-made for its’ opening, there is a good fit every time, even in retrofit installations.
The full height locking and hinging mechanisms actually strengthen the door by uniformly distributing the load. A seven
foot Total Door has the equivalent of a seven foot tall 5/8" throw deadbolt that engages the frame over its’ full height.
When open, the I-beam shape locking channel tilts at an angle and when closed, securely snaps shut over the full length
latch stop. The door is so strong that a hurricane rating is achieved without special hardware.
The dual pivot-point, semi-wide, throw hinge provides a wider door opening at 90° and allows the door to lay tight against
the wall when open 90° or 180°. The full height hinge and locking channel eliminate point loading and dramatically increase
life expectancy and abuse resistance. A complete Grade 1, custom-fitted, factory assembled Total Door installs in minutes.

Stepping Into the Future
How does the Total Door system compare to the conventional piece-by-piece approach? In a nutshell, the Total
Door system is designed and engineered as a total solution, suitable for both new and existing openings. It is an
innovative and proven design found in some of the world’s finest structures and in some of the most diverse
applications imaginable. If life cycle costs are important to you, you need to look at Total Door.
Conventional doors and frames require on-site assembly of a myriad of parts, including coordinators, vertical
rods, astragals, hinges, panic bars and flush bolts. The Total Door makes much of the conventional hardware
obsolete. Since items such as operating grips, locks, levers, lite kits, glazing, kick plates and exit devices are
factory installed, they require no field labor. Factory-installed panic devices integrated into the door
have as little as a 1/8 inch projection in the open position. Moreover, the Total Door full height
hinge and full height locking channel require no templating and uniformly distribute loads
providing superior strength, durability and abuse resistance.
