BY THE NUMBERS
•Electrical distribution or lighting equipment
was involved in about 20,900 reported home
structure fires in 2005, according to a March
2008 report released by the National Fire
Protection Association (NFPA). These fires
resulted in 500 civilian deaths and 1,100
civilian injuries, with $862 million in direct
property damage.
•Malfunctioning electrical distribution equipment
is the culprit in many residential fires. According
to the NFPA, lamps, light fixtures, and light
bulbs caused 28 percent of fires, and fixed
wiring accounted for 22 percent of fires. Cords
and plugs, however, were responsible for the
largest percentage of fire-caused civilian deaths.
In an August 2008 report, the NFPA estimated
that there was a civilian fire death every 153
minutes, and a civilian fire injury every half
hour in 2007.
•By helping their clients with preventative
maintenance, contractors can help to reduce
fire hazards. The 2008 NEC requires arc fault
circuit interrupters (AFCIs) to be installed
throughout any living space in homes that are
being built or remodeled. According to the
Electrical Safety Foundation International (ESFI),
this new technology could prevent 50 percent
to 75 percent of fires caused by electrical arcs.
In turn, this could save hundreds of lives, reduce
thousands of injuries, and avoid nearly $1 billion
in property damage annually.
FROM CONCEPT THROUGH CONSTRUCTION
Preventative Maintenance:
The Key to Safety
and Profitability
Prevent this from
happening to you
Electrical contractors can reduce their company’s operating expenses through pre-planning, testing, and ongoing maintenance
An overloaded circuit burst into flames, and fire spread
through the walls at a four-unit apartment building last summer.
After dousing the flames and making the building safe for entry,
the owner called upon M&P Brothers Electrical Contractors to remove
the incinerated knob and tube wiring, install a new electrical system,
and put in GFCI receptacles throughout the Boston brownstone building.
“The student had a guitar amp, DVD player, and mini fridge all plugged into one circuit,”
said Paul Anastasio, master electrician, who started his company with his brother, Mark,
three years ago. “It was drawing 30 amps on a 15-amp breaker, and it didn’t trip out.
As a result, it was a complete gut job.”
No college students lost their lives as a result of the fire, but the building sustained
significant smoke, water, and fire damage. Electrical system failures ignite more fires than
any other culprit, according to the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), Quincy,
Mass. Over time, electrical equipment can deteriorate, wire insulation can break down,
and systems can overload.
In the case of the Boston brownstone apartment building, M&P Brothers Electrical was
called in after the fact to repair the damage. In many cases, however, the Holbrook,
Mass.-based firm helps clients to identify fire hazards before their buildings go up in
flames. This type of work, called preventative maintenance comprises, about 10 to 15
percent of business for M&P Electrical.
The company has contracts with both, commercial
office buildings and manufacturing plants. On a
routine basis, electricians identify and correct fire
hazards such as overloaded circuits or clogged
exhaust fans. The company also inspects motors
and controls at manufacturing plants and visits with
homeowners who are concerned about potential
fire hazards.
“We’ve been called over to people’s homes when
they smell smoke, and we’ve found smoldering
light fixtures in the ceiling,” Anastasio said. “We’ve
also gone into office buildings and seen mini fridges,
faxes, printers, and space heaters all plugged into one circuit.”

WESCO is here for you...
Electrical contracting companies can
protect their clients against fires and costly
damages through preventative maintenance.
At the same time, they can use this strategy
to control costs within their own business.
By properly maintaining tools and equipment, companies can cut expenses and
increase profitability over the long run.
Preventative maintenance has become
increasingly important as businesses are
looking for ways to save money in the
slowing economy. In these tight times,
companies need to explore ways to
maximize their earnings, reduce operating
expenses, and secure a profitable future.
Investing in preventative maintenance
carries upfront costs, but it can save
companies thousands, if not millions
of dollars down the road.
By using the latest tools and testers,
electrical contracting firms can identify fire
hazards and corroded electrical equipment.
WESCO Branches have all of these products
in stock, and can deliver these testers to
contractors in a timely manner through
our Distribution Centers nationwide.
As electrical contracting companies strive
to provide the best service to their
customers, WESCO is behind them
every step of the way.

WESCO Branches
Help Contractors
Control Costs
“The economy has slipped downhill, and so have companies’ profits. To help businesses survive the downturn, WESCO Branches provide their electrical contracting
clients with the products and services they need to trim expenses and stay in business.
Preventative maintenance has been the key for many companies to control their costs
and stay profitable. Here are seven ways WESCO Branches are helping contractors to
provide preventative maintenance services to their clients and control their own
operating costs in the down economy.
Tools and Testers. WESCO Branches carry the latest thermal imaging equipment
and testers so electrical contractors can identify electrical hazards before they
result in an explosion or a fire. Due to the new requirement in the National Electrical
Code, contractors also need an increasing number of arc fault circuit interrupters,
and WESCO Branches have these products in stock and ready for immediate delivery.
“WESCO is very committed to safety, and that’s one of the key elements for all
contractors moving into 2009,” said Rob Burnett, Branch manager in Hammond, IN.
“We provide our customers with a broad range of safety equipment in the Distribution
Centers and at the local level.”
Training Seminars. WESCO Branches nationwide invite suppliers into their facilities
to sponsor training sessions on how to effectively handle arc flash hazards. During
these seminars, electrical contractors can learn about the latest line of testers in
the market as well as strategies to keep their electricians safe while working on
energized equipment.
Product Storage. With the rising cost of supplies, electrical contractors need to find
ways to provide preventative maintenance services while still making a profit. To
help contractors, WESCO allows companies to buy products in bulk and then store
the supplies in one of WESCO’s distribution centers. “This approach allows WESCO
and contractors to do certain things in a commodity market, and it’s a win-win for
the customer,” Burnett said.
Flexible Billing. One of the big issues that contractors face is covering the cost of
supplies. To help companies, WESCO allows companies to pay just once a month
and put all the invoices on one statement.
Up-to-the-Minute Delivery Updates. WESCO can send electrical contractors a backlog
report. This allows contractors to give their customers the exact details as to when the
materials are arriving on the jobsite.
Shipping Products Overseas. WESCO can help contracting companies to ship
supplies overseas by combining shipments. Through some forward thinking and
planning, contractors can reduce their freight expenses and save money. Companies
also don’t have to carry as many products on their shelves because the WESCO
Branches can deliver the products to them so quickly, said Robert Hebert, Branch
manager for the San Antonio WESCO Branch.
Diverse Distribution Centers. WESCO can often turn around a bill of materials in less
than a week because of the multitude of Distribution Centers nationwide. This also
serves as an easy conduit for returns, Hebert said. “Rather than having to withhold
credit from customers, WESCO Branches can instead issue credit right away because
we can return the product to the Distribution Centers.”

Preventative Maintenance:
The Key to Safety and
Profitability Continued
Averting Disaster
Through regular inspections, however, electrical contracting companies can help their clients
to reduce risk and ensure safety. For example, Stultz Electric of St. Claire Shores, Mich. has
been inspecting homes, offices, and manufacturing facilities for the past seven years. Its
electricians inspect outlets, switches, lighting, and equipment connections for any sign of
wear and tear, deterioration, or damage.
Over the years, the company has uncovered improper ratings on fuses and breakers, broken-down insulation, improperly installed
equipment, and improper grounding of equipment and electrical panels. One of the most serious problems happened on a Sunday
evening during a thunderstorm. Kevin Stultz, the company’s owner and a master electrician, received an emergency service call from
a homeowner who thought rain dripped into the junction box and shorted it out. Upon further investigation, he discovered a far more
serious problem.
“I saw puffs of smoke, and when I put my hand up to the meter, I could feel the heat,” he said. “When I opened up the panel, there was
a fireworks display inside. I told them to go to a hotel room, and I shut down the power until it was dry enough to tear it apart and put
in a new panel.”
Through preventative maintenance, the electrical contracting company is helping its clients to uncover electrical problems before they
become dangerous or even deadly for residents and occupants.
“A little bit of preventative maintenance goes a long way,” Stultz said.
Preventative maintenance also comprises a significant portion of business for Bell Electrical Contractors, a residential, commercial and industrial
electrical contracting firm based in Maryland Heights, MO. The company has come across equipment that hasn’t been cleaned in years when
working on service and remodeling projects, said Steve Williams, safety director.
“It’s very important that electrical equipment is clean and is operating properly,” Williams said. “Otherwise, it could lead to a fire,
an explosion, or an arc flash.”
Maintaining Tools and Protective Equipment
To help their clients to avoid property damage and prevent fires, electrical contractors must first make sure their testing tools and personal
protective equipment is in good working order. For example, one of Bell Electrical’s employees is responsible on an ongoing basis for
warehousing all the tools, sending the tools out on jobs, keeping track of the inventory, and maintaining all the tools.
Bell Electrical also requires its electricians to abide by the Code by wearing rubber gloves and arc flash suits while working on energized
equipment. To protect its electricians from harm, the company sends this equipment out for testing every six months.
“Properly maintaining tools and equipment helps us to save time and prevent injury,” Williams said. “It’s a valuable part of our business.”
Stultz Electric routinely inspects its plugs, extension cords, and other electrical supplies for any sign of damage. If the equipment appears
to be deteriorating, then the electricians immediately discard it, Stultz said.
Through offering preventative maintenance services and maintaining tools and equipment, electrical contracting firms are doing their part to
reduce the number of fires and to ensure that their electricians come home safely at the end of each work day. While preventative maintenance services and safety products can be a significant investment, companies can’t put a price on safety, Anastasio said.
