SAFETY AND SECURITY FOR DOORS UNITED KINGDOM PERSONAL EXPERT ADVICE ALWAYS AVAILABLE GfS is the market leading supplier for solutions to secure emergency exits. The company was founded 35 years ago in Hamburg. Our solutions are currently distributed in more than 20 countries. The benefits offered by our products are clear. According to EN179, EN1125 and prEN13637 people must be able to leave a public building through the emergency exits at any time. For building operators this is a major security concern. Unauthorised people may leave the building or use these exits for theft, shortcuts and illegal entry etc. The problems which subsequently arise from these issues often far outweigh the cost of one of our effective control systems. GfS solutions serve different customer groups including retail shops, hospitals, nursing homes, theatres, museums, hotels, kindergartens etc. Each application and each customer is different. Therefore GfS offers stand alone solutions as well as highly integrated solutions with central control. All GfS solutions are easy to install and maintain. Browse through our new catalogue "Safety and Security for Doors" and choose the right solution for your application. If you have any questions or specific requirements please feel free to contact us. We look forward to responding to your queries. It will support fire safety officers, health and safety departments and resellers in their work. LEGAL BACKGROUND 1. Emergency exits must not be locked from the inside for safety reasons. 2. Emergency exits create a security breach within a building perimeter enabling unauthorised people to abuse them or endanger themselves. Operators wish to limit the abuse of emergency exits. Insurance Companies Building Controllers/ Fire Departments demand that the building is secured from the outside at any time (and sometimes from the inside too) demand that the emergency exits are open from the inside at any time Safety first. Saving lives is more important than securing goods. EMERGENCY EXIT LOCKS ACCORDING TO EN179 Applies to emergency exit doors that are not accessible to the public and people inside the building are familiar with, e.g. office buildings, residential buildings, plants etc. Application • Small group of users • Users are familiar with their environment • Users have been trained • No access to the public • Panic situation unlikely GfS e-Bar® EMERGENCY EXIT LOCKS ACCORDING TO EN1125 Applies to public buildings where users are not familiar with the functions of the emergency exit doors but have to be able to open them without prior instruction. Application • Large number of users • Users unfamiliar with the building environment • Vision may be hindered by smoke or darkness • Panic extremely likely Emergency Exits are supposed to be opened at any time by anybody inside the building with one hand. The required force shall not exceed 70N (EN179)/80N (EN 1125). 4 GfS e-Bar® description . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 6 GfS e-Bar® versions . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 8 GfS e-Bar® locks and accessories . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 10 GfS e-Bar® – The innovative push-bar with integrated alarm GfS e-Bar® The innovative GfS e Bar combines the ability to open the emergency exit door in accordance with EN1125 with the potential to control the usage of the door. The GfS e Bar is not only a conventional push bar, but also a security barrier with a visual/ acoustic alarm and escape route security light in one combined unit. With its highly visible LED display (red/green Emergency Exit Alarm Secured) and its positioning at half height on the door, the emergency exit can be found easily even with a heavy smoke presence. The GfS e Bar can be retrofitted on existing doors and can be integrated into a central alarm system. The e Bar comes with either mains power or battery operation. It also incorporates additional features such as a “door left open” alarm, automatic alarm switch off and battery monitoring. Please note that the GfS e Bar is used in conjunction with certified panic lock and locking plates. We are happy to supply these components as a complete package to assist with the installation process. PRE-ALARM The emergency exit is in an alarm secured mode, which is indicated by a permanent green illumination when wired. In case of battery operation the GfS e-Bar® works in an energy saving mode without background illumination. SINGLE RELEASE Authorized personnel exit the door by using the integrated key switch without triggering an alarm. Alternatively it is possible to exit the door by using the door key. In the single release mode after 10 sec. a "door open" alarm is activated in order to notify staff that the door has been left open. While slightly pressing the GfS e-Bar® a visual red LED light and acoustic pre-alarm are activated which stop as soon as the GfS e-Bar® is released. CENTRAL ALARM PERMANENT RELEASE After pressing the GfS e Bar® fully it is possible to leave the building through the panic door. Doing this a visual green LED light and a permanent acoustic alarm are activated. 6 GfS e-Bar® ALARM SECURED By using the integrated key switch the emergency exit can be deactivated for a longer period of time. No alarm will be activated when passing through the door. 7 GfS e-Bar® – The innovative push-bar with integrated alarm GfS e-Bar® with integrated alarm (battery operated and/or mains powered) GfS e-Bar® mechanical with floating contacts This model works either with a 9 V battery which is controlled by the PCB or with an external power supply of 10-30VDC. The battery control function checks the voltage every 10 hours. If the voltage drops below 7v an acoustic alarm is emitted every 60 seconds indicating that the battery needs changing. When battery operated the GfS e-Bar® works in an energy saving mode which basically means that the green LEDs of the display are switched off. The intelligent PCB recognizes when an external power supply is connected to the GfS e-Bar®. The energy saving mode is switched off. The display shines permanently green. It indicates that the emergency exit is secured and the alarm function is in operation. This model is a push-bar with floating contacts to provide information on the positional status of the door. This unit will also include a pictogram outlining the operation of the GfS e-Bar®. Depending on the number of units which are connected to the central display Conventional wiring All GfS Exit Control units are connected directly to the GfS Connection Box. The GfS Connection Box serves at the same time as central power supply for all GfS Exit Control and as an interface for the central display. The GfS Connection Box is connected to the central display via a 1.5m long cable. It is possible to obtain actual status either a conventional wiring or a BUS wiring is recommended. Connection boxes for 8 or 16 units (conventional wiring) and a connection box for up to 64 units (BUS wiring) are typically feeding the central display. information on each GfS Exit Control. The red LED on the central display indicates that the door is alarm secured. The green LED together with a central accoustic alarm indicates that a specific door has been opened without using the key, the blinking green LED indicates that the door is not secured by the GfS Exit Control (the option permanent opening contact is required). Instead of a direct connection between each single GfS Exit Control and a GfS Connection box a ring wire is connecting all GfS Exit Controls with the GfS Connection box BUS. A core component for this kind of solution is the BUS Interface 770 012 which assigns an adress to each GfS Exit Control. The GfS Connection box BUS interprets these adresses and sends the information to the corresponding LEDs on the central display. Ring distances of up to 1 km can be achieved without any additional amplifier. M1 M2 BUS junction box Part No. 770.010. The reusable GfS Exit Covers work with patented red and green markings (green underplate and red upper plate) and a predetermined breaking-point. The GfS Exit Covers is made of unbreakable macrolon (plastic). It is mounted over the door handle or the security latch and inhibits the opening of the door. For an emergency opening of the door, the cover must be removed. The red upper plate breaks and the GfS Exit Covers falls off making it possible to use the door handle. The cover is replaced with new red upper plates and the door is secured again. This system offers you the advantage of lower follow-up costs (red upper plates are replaced instead of GfS Exit Covers), no injuries (since the cover stays intact) and less plastic refuse is incurred.
