Claes Claeson Managing director Ship design In designing ships for the future, logistical holistic thinking is equally as important as energy efficiency and minimizing the effect on the environment. At FKAB Marine Design we work with solutions for new, more environment-friendly fuels for example, and forming and materials that reduce fuel consumption and increase cargo capacity. A ship is also a work place, where ergonomics, work environment and safety are all important factors. We design beautiful ships that allow people to develop and feel good in their surroundings. Feasibility study A thorough feasibility study is often a critical factor for the future success of a project. We visualize and formulate ideas for a preliminary marine design. A convincing presentation, based on reliable facts and figures, is our goal in the development of a feasibility study. Basic design FKAB is your basic design partner during contact with authorities and classification societies. We do all calculations and studies necessary, provide projections and documents, and act as mediators. We have long experience of close cooperation with Swedish and international shipyards. We can assist with everything regarding drawings and documents required by authorities and classification societies. Detail design The detail design phase is when we quickly and cost-effectively provide complete designs, projections, calculations and visualizations. Effective detail design is just as important for conversions, special designs and smaller projects. Concept design A concept design is a revised development of the feasibility design and main dimensions. The result of a concept design is a GA and a specification that is detailed enough for a shipyard to be able to tender an estimate. This allows the shipowner to make a decision on investment or to present the concept to investors and other interested parties. Contract design A contract design follows on from the concept design and gives the customer an adequately detailed basis for a new-building contract with the shipyard to be signed. During this phase results of previous work can be established and the shipyard can quote a fixed price. CASE: Development and design of two 4 700 DWT bitumen tankers Client: Frederiet AB, Nynas Petroleum AB. Yard: Wuhan Nanhua Huanggang Jiangbei Shipyard Co. Ltd. Commission: Basic design The ships are designed to carry liquid products at a temperature up to 250º C. The two cargo tanks are individually mounted and expandable to allow for heat expansion. Each tank is connected to a pump room. The ships’ dimensions are designed for those ports they visit. The ships have double hulls and the handling of ballast water on board is designed in such a way as to also meet future environmental requirements. This has been a joint project between our Swedish and Chinese offices. Consultancy services Shipping is a complex operation with many different interests involved. More info on Total design at fkab.com Customer: GESAB FKAB has contributed in the development of a new product - Catamiser - a combination of an SCR reactor and an Economiser. A Catamiser has two functions: heat-recycling and the reduction of NOx in emissions. A prototype has been designed, manufactured and installed in M/T Olympus, a 9 000 DWT product tanker. The Catamiser is connected to the ship’s three auxiliary engines and replaces the oil pipe previously used in port. This has resulted in lower fuel consumption and reduced CO2 emissions. The Catamiser is an environment-friendly invention that reduces both NOx and CO2 content. FKAB has been part of the whole project, from the first sketches through to manufacture of the prototype.
